From a press release sent out by NFL.com:
DEFENSE: S JAIRUS BYRD, BUFFALO BILLS
* Byrd, a second-round selection out of Oregon, started all four games at free safety and totaled 15 tackles, five interceptions and seven passes defensed as the Bills posted a 2-2 record in October .
* Byrd is the first rookie with five interceptions in a month since Chicago Bears safety MARK CARRIER (December 1990).
* He is the first rookie with two interceptions in two consecutive games since Dallas Cowboys cornerback EVERSON WALLS in 1981.
* In the past two wins, the Bills offense converted three of Byrd’s four interceptions into touchdowns (one against the Jets and two against the Panthers).
* Leads all NFL rookies and ranks second in the NFL with five interceptions (DARREN SHARPER, 6)
* Byrd joins safety DONTE WHITNER (September 2006), linebacker SAM COWART (October 1998) and defensive end GABE NORTHERN (November 1996) as the fourth Bills player to earn a Rookie of the Month Award.

Interesting
He is the first rookie with two interceptions in two consecutive games since Dallas Cowboys cornerback EVERSON WALLS in 1981.
Everson Walls was also considered too slow to play CB. Coming out of Grambling, he ran a 4.72 40-time.
He picked off 11 passes as a rookie.
The missing number.
For the longest time #31 was a missing number. I sure during preseason and on some other short related circumstance the number was used but for the most part is wasn’t. Now the number has a name and it is Jarius Byrd. Nice Honor and a Bill.
Excuses are a sign of weakness!!!!!!
James Williams?
Wasn’t that the name of the guy we drafted number one in 91 or something with the number 31 . He was a fast CB that didn’t amount to much… I could be wrong though
Good Luck With Your Firings Mr. Wilson….Go Bills!
Yes – he was the first person in franchise history to wear it for more than one game, since it represented the “spirit of the franchise”.
This letterhead is why #31 was never really given out....
Not really sure why 31 was chosen, but alas:

News Flash!!
This just in. Coach Jauron has decided to bench free safety Jairus Byrd due to increased productivity. He has said it is for the good of the team and he doesn’t want the other players to develop low self esteem.
Hopefully this won't go to his head
The kid has a lot of work to do – he needs to get better at diagnosing plays and needs to be more consistent with tackles (I liked the one on S.Smith last game to save the TD).
I would also like to see him get faster – he does seem slow out there…..
I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying
Trent Edwards - Backup QB until furthur notice. Care to prove me wrong Trent?
This is what we got him for...
I was most certainly amongst the masses in raising an eyebrow at the selection when it happened, but I understood the sentiment when I saw his college production. It goes to show that the combine is by no stretch of the imagination a true indicator of football IQ. Borderline elite production in a powerful college football conference is what we’re seeing come to fruition at the NFL level. It’s a beautiful thing.
That was kind of the same vibe I got when they selected Omon last year. Even though it was at NW MO St, he had ridiculous production in college. Whether that will ever manifest itself in the pros obviously still remains to be seen, but at least he has looked decently viable this year in the limited opportunities he’s gotten this year.
Love the interceptions. Absolutely love them. That is something this defense has lacked FOR YEARS. Now, just clean up that tackling Jairus!

Where are the guys that blast you for being negative all the time now? You are negative, sure, but you have your moments. When you see results you tip the hat.
