I've been asked 64 times via e-mail, Twitter and one funny talk-show rant how I can possibly still have faith in Trent Edwards as Buffalo's (or anyone's) quarterback of the future. I have two answers. One: I watched the first Monday night game of the season, when Trent Edwards hit his receivers in stride, stood up to a hostile crowd and Patriot pressure and had his team up by 11 points with six minutes to play. Once you see enough perfectly thrown balls and coolly executed drives, you tend to want to give a guy chances to do it again. Two: This is his second starting season. With quarterbacks, assuming they work hard and have the requisite talent, patience is a virtue. All the young ones can't be Ryan and Flacco.

Its enough to keep me going…I needed some optimism and maybe a more realistic perception of what’s going on with our team, and our QB. He’s a good kid I think we all want to be good. Its my opinion that the NFL is getting to him a little bit, and so is the pressure, and if this team can rebound now, instead of week 15, than maybe we can still put something together.

John Clayton said our training camp is as tough as the vast majority of the ones out there, too. Injuries just happen.
We get caught up being local (most of us at least) when the rest of the NFL is dealing with stuff like this too.

He did mention that firing Jauron in-season and going with an interim HC isn’t going to do (anywhere) what 90% of a fanbase hopes it will. It would take the new guy at least 5 weeks to learn his personnel, unless the interim HC is currently on the team and someone who will become the next full-fledged HC. I agree with him and think that they HAVE to retain Jauron through the season if they want to win any games.
Everyone thinks it’s bad now, just stop and think for a minute what would really happen if the fault line opens wider.

I trust Peter King as much as I trust that guy from family guy that sells cloud and volcano insurance.
Salesman: “How about I let you in on something every home owner needs: VOLCANO INSURANCE! Now, I have an uncle that knows a lot about volcanos, and he says a volcano is coming THIS WAY.”
Peter: “But we’ve never had any trouble with volcanos.”
Salesman: “Well don’t you think we’re due for one?”
Peter (thinking): Touche, salesman. I too have an uncle.

The reason I was still defending Trent, to an extent. Somehow I’m not sold on giving up on the guy. He has struggled, but it isn’t just Trent, it’s the whole offense. The receivers, the line, the coaches, etc.

Was Edwards really that good against the Pats? The Bills offense scored 17 points. Buffalo did have two 60+ yard TD drives, but they went like this:
Edwards rushes for 16
NE commits 5 yard penalty
Jackson rushes to the left for 4 yards
BUF commits 6 yard penalty
Jackson rushes to the left for 16 yard gain
screen to Jackson for 21 yards
Omon up the middle for 1 yard gain
Edwards across the middle to Nelson who runs it in for the TD
Edwards incomplete pass
Jackson rushed up the middle for 5 yard gain
BUF committed 10 yard penalty
Edwards passed to F. Jackson to the right for 18 yard gain
Jackson rushed to the left for 2 yard gain
Jackson rushed to the right for 10 yard gain
Edwards incomplete pass to the right
Omon rushed up the middle for 7 yard gain
Jackson rushed to the right for 4 yard gain
Edwards sacked by A. Thomas. NE committed 15 yard penalty
Jackson rushed to the right for 3 yard gain
Jackson rushed to the left for 1 yard loss
Edwards rushed to the left for 9 yard gain
Edwards incomplete pass to the right
Edwards checks down to Jackson who runs it in for the TD
Buffalo’s monday night offense was the Fred Jackson show. Edwards had a good game, but I don’t think it was good enough to assume that he can get it done at the level that an NFL team needs to win a championship.

Exactly
Trent wasn’t bad but he was far from good.
When Peter King says:
Once you see enough perfectly thrown ballsI have to wonder which game he was watching? Is he trying to keep Edwards in Buffalo so that his beloved Pats can have two easy games per season for a while more?
There is one thing I’ve realized after four games this year and that is that Trent Edwards does not have an NFL arm. EVERY throw is babied and every deep throw is lobbed in. I realize now that I have never, ever seen Trent edwards ZIP one into a thight hole, I don’t think he can. That’S why we are not able to use TO the proper way, slants over the middle, because the ball takes too much time to get there. It also explains why Trent only throws to open guys (or at least what seems like open guys) because he knows that he can’t zip a clothes line in there!
Trent seems to be intelligent and able to diagnose when the checkdown will be open and he is quite satisfied use that approach. I’ll be the first to admit that I was wrong because I was looking at completion % & rating as a way to compare his career start to other QB’s that eventually became great players. What I am realizing is that he doesn’t have the zip to gun it into anticipated holes and he never throws to a spot, he seems to always wait until the guy is wide open, he needs to start anticipating more and trusting his receiver to be there, maybe if he starts anticipating a bit more, he can circumvent his lack of an arm.

I want to beleive...
But, base on his most recent performance, I really can’t. His decision making was horrendous, and he has seldom flashed significant ability to hit players downfield. He is too quick to check down. You have to beleive that Evans and Owens are capable of getting open. Edwards might have the best #1, #2, and slot recevier combo in the game. He has not been able to get them the ball.
I am really questioning his caliber as a starting NFL quarterback… I have always been a supporter of his, but I really think the next four games we seal his fate (one way or another).

I actually disagree with you both. His play for the remainder of the season is definitely important, but I think luck will actually be the biggest factor. If the Bills hire a new Coach and/or GM, then they’re initial opinions of Edwards will be very important. How the draft unfolds will be hugely important too. If Buffalo can draft a guy who can start day one, then Edwards is a goner or is very clearly made a backup. If a few juniors go back to school and Buffalo ends up with a guy who isn’t ready to take Trent’s job, then the way Trent handles himself over the summer and his how he plays in training camp will also be more important to a new coach then these next 4 or even 12 games.

I agree, but if Edwards plays like a pro-bowler the rest of the year, they probably don’t even draft a QB, however unlikely that may be.

if Trent were to anticipate better, throw into tighter windows and have more balls he’d probably be a good QB. I think the anticipation and more balls can happen – he just might be one of those QB’s that need 5 years….

Anticipate better=yes, he could improve and should if he wants a chance at a career down the road.
tighter windows=no. He really doesn’t have a big arm. Nerver seen a rope from him and he knows his limitation. All his throws look babied

Consistency and the ability to make a play on his own or put the team on his back for a victory?
Yes, Trent has a lot of talent and is a great study of the game and has come a long way to be in the position he is in today.
The problem is with Trent is that what Peter King is saying is that it comes out of Trent ocassionally and with no consistency. Sure a QB is not going to score points with every drive start. However, Trent has resorted to JP Losman bad at times which is a concern.
Also, what I’d like to see from Trent more (and it is not necessarily to go down field or throw the ball long more) is for him to make some plays on his own. When our OL or defense stinks, he has to step up and be able to make plays, break tackles, look off safeties, burn corners playing bump and run, read blitzes, hit guys in stride, etc. that will make defenses know that this is a dangerous QB and he can make a play on his own at any time. I haven’t seen any of that from Trent. In fact, more and more I see Trent playing as well as the rest of the team if not worse. He has to rise above and be a leader or playmaker this year if we are to have any hope for the future with our team. If not, it will be Sam Bradford or Tim Tiebow…
We all know that we’d prefer not to have to go out and get another young QB and develop them because we need so many other high draft pick playmakers on our team and can’t afford to spend another 2-3 years in mediocracy.

Trent is a
guy that needs a system, an identity and most importantly a lot of time given by the OL. He loves holding onto the football, and when all else fails he just checks it down. QB’s in this league have to have great systems, good talent around them, and most of all TIME. 3 OC’s in 3 years, a patchwork OL, and a Defensive minded HC, all lead to setting up Edwards to fail. That said, the kid just doesn’t make throws other QB’s make. Not even glimpses. How many throws this year would you say you went “now that’s a Big-Time throw?” I can’t really think of any. Big time throws to me are to TE’s on seam routes, throwing to a WR in a right window on a 15 yd in…what makes a QB great is the sideline route and throwing it behind the WR where only he can catch it, making throws on the run, etc. I just don’t see those flashes out of Trent. His physical tools are nice, but to really maximize them he needs an OC, a scheme, a system that fits this Offense. I just don’t think DJ and AVP can give that to him….at least not this year. So when DJ gets fired, it will be OC 4 for Edwards if they decide to keep him….not a great scenario for the 25 year old Stanford product

I'm on board
with your post. The only thing I would add is what appears to be a complete lack of leadership by Trent. It is an intangible but it is real. I have never seen him step up and take charge and doubt I ever will.
by jpheff on Oct 8, 2009 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He simply does not have the arm strength to zip anything, which severely limits those deep ins, slants, etc. Basically no tight spots, can’t do it. And I think the rest of the league have seen that on film and know that our routes are limited to what he can do well. I think that is the main reason for MrCheckdown.

Don't forget Drew Brees
Everyone is gushing about what a great NFL QB Drew Brees is these days, but his first three years in the league he looked anything but that. All the complaints we have been hearing about Trent were being heaped on Brees for a time. The Chargers drafting Rivers seemed to wake him up, but he was also maturing on his own. So I wouldn’t be too quick to pass final judgment on Trent quite yet. The case of Brees shows that it sometimes takes a little time even for the great QB’s to come into their own

I’d feel a lot better about this blurb if it came from someone like Dr. Z instead of Peter King, but I agree with it anyways…
He’s been a starter for less than thirty games. He’s had 3 different OC’s. I don’t think he’s had a good solid OL for more than three games at a time. He’s had no TE to throw to. He’s had a #2 WR playing a #1 role, and no real #2 to speak off. The only thing consistent for him has been a RB who sells jerseys but might be better served as a #2 to the current guy. Needless to say, I don’t think he’s had an easy go of it.
The fact that he’s shown any glimmer of hope at times is almost an achievement in itself. The line I like best from King is this one:
“All the young ones can’t be Ryan and Flacco.”
by krytime on Oct 8, 2009 9:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Decisions, decisions
I think Trent can be a very productive QB if the rest of the team is on their game. IF we had some OL depth that would force defenses to adjust and maybe free someone up. But it will take another year or two to get there.
With that said I don’t think he will ever be a ‘gunslinger’. Well maybe in 2 or 4 years. But until then I think fans will always be wishing he could get the ball downfield a little more.
