And away we go! (Thurman Thomas quotes)

Dick Jauron was the first head coach fired in the 2009 NFL season, which quite expectedly, set of a firestorm of speculation.  Here's this afternoon's round up:

Father-son coaching duo in BUF?

With Dick Jauron out as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, we'll continue to get tips left and right as to who will be his eventual replacement. For now, it's Perry Fewell with the headset, as the former defensive coordinator was named interim coach on Tuesday.

But might the Bills take a look to their rich AFL history to select the next head man? Several pundits -- including AFC East blogger Tim Graham -- have suggested that the team may go with Marty Schottenheimer, who was dumped by the Chargers after leading them to a 14-2 record in the 2007 season, and who played for the Bills in the 1960's.

An interesting angle to the Schottenheimer hire would be that it would open the door for him to hire his son, Brian Schottenheimer, as offensive coordinator. Brian was considered a leading candidate to take over as head coach of the New York Jets following the ouster of Eric Mangini, but the team eventually hired Rex Ryan, which did not sit well with Schottenheimer at the time. Going further with this hypothetical, we could foresee the Schottenheimers setting up a progression plan in Buffalo, where Marty would coach for a set period, then the team could have an easy transition to Brian.

Personally, I'm a huge Schottenheimer fan and would love to see Marty Ball in Buffalo, but i'm not so sure I like the idea of bringing in Brain Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator as well.  Would it definitely have to be a packaged deal?

Haslett the Bills' top choice?

With Dick Jauron's firing on Tuesday, the speculation began as to whom the Buffalo Bills would hire to replace him. As ESPN.com's Tim Graham noted in his rundown of potential replacements, the Bills don't exactly have a strong track record of luring high-priced, strong-willed outsiders to the organization. "[Team owner Ralph] Wilson's modus operandi has been to pursue coaches who don't command a high salary and don't expect organizational control." We'd have thought the Terrell Owens signing was perhaps a harbinger of a change in philosophy, but aside from the increased media attention on the team, Owens has been somewhat of a bust.

According to Graham, that leaves less-prominent former head coaches that have flown somewhat under the radar as the leaders, as well as up-and-coming assistants. But the leader so far might be Jim Haslett:

Haslett a sharp contrast from Jauron
"Many observers see the former New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams head coach as the perfect choice. Teams often like to go with a coach that has a different personality from the one they just fired. Haslett would be that. He's fiery. He also has a history with Buffalo. He played linebacker for the Bills from 1979 through 1985 and got his start in coaching as an assistant for the University of Buffalo."

And then there are these interesting tweets from a certain hall of fame running back that seem to confirm Brian's speculation:

I just got word today on what is happening at one bills drive. Will tell u guys at noon!!!!!! WOW is the word!!!!!!
Nobody is safe at One Bills Drive, they r cleaning house and bringing in a Football guy to run the ship. Jimbo say Ralph wil spend money!!!!
When I say clean house, I mean clean the effing house out!!!!!!
Everybody players included!!!!!!!!!
That's all I have for now, but I will continue to keep u guys informed

Stay tuned Bills fan, it's going to be a wild off-season!

Nice post.....rec'd

I can wait to see what happens. Both Haslett and Marty would be upgrades to what we have been dealing with, but I am not sure they are Ralf’s, and more importantly the new GM’s, first choice. The GM thing must be settled first.

Question, Joe, and I mean this completely seriously: do you misspell Ralph on purpose?

LOL!!!!! Yes......just a little joke.....most of the time I just laugh at it by myself

Granted but Ralf and Ralph can both be used to mean “puke”, but if I used Ralph nobody would know. I am surprised you noticed it was a recurring thing. I might start using the correct spelling if he starts making better decisions.

And, FYI, yes calling you Brain is still accidental, most of the time :-)

WHY ARE YOU GETTING ME SO EXCITED BRO!!

this post is awesome but now im getting all amped but will just get let down when they hire Jim Fassel.

Here’s what I’m thinking….what if the father – son duo isnt Schotty’s but Shanny’s? I would literally fall to hte floor gasping for air if we got Mike and Kyle Shanahan in here either as coach and coordinator or GM and HC. WOW!!!

Everywhere I’m reading says Ralph may open the wallet. Please be true, please be true, please be true….

hmm

The Shotty guys would certainly be a welcome change from the Dick/AVP tandem. Might provide some stability as well in the Bills organization if they can stick around.

I’ll still wait for any rumors of a new GM before I get excited though.

Haha, much better than my fanpost on the same topic. I hope Thurman is right. Though there a quite a few players I’m attached to, I just have to hope they’ll find favor with the new regime. On the other hand, I hope this staff gets absolutely scoured.

After a day of bad news yesterday (it seemed to me by making the move midseason Ralph was content to lay the blame entirely at DJ’s feet and continue business as usual) the prospect of a real football GM has me looking up.

It’s about time Ralph comes to the conclusion that if you want success, you’ve got to find a proven guy to run the ship, and in order for that to happen, you need to show that guy the money (Jerry Maguire is the man).

Thanks for this

Please no to the Schotty’s. Brian Schottenheimer is a very very mediocre OC. We don’t need that. I also don’t really care for Marty and him being almost70. We need young blood in this place. I don’t want some father-son duo because if/when it fails, I doubt the father does anything to harm his son’s job. There’s way too much potential for sides to be taken in these types of situations. This franchise definitely doesn’t need that crap.

Don’t really like Haslett either. He’s never been much of a winner and I really don’t want another losing retread.

Ralph is going to open his wallet for what, I wonder? It won’t be for players, since enough money is spent there and there won’t exactly be many FA’s available with the current CBA in flux. I can’t imagine it’ll be on a coach since I don’t believe any big name, proven winner wants to deal with Ralph or the current mess. If its for a proven talent evaluator, great, but who exactly would that be???? Unless Bill Parcells or the like becomes available, where are we going with this? These guys aren’t usually available…

LEvy was an older coach…. times have changed, and Schotty might be good candidate. I will admit, I wish it were ten years ago, becaue I love him as a coach… I will be mixed if he is hired, but only becuse of the age.

I say no to Haslett only because he is proven mediocrity. If he were the DC, maybe…

if anything it should be for inquiry only. The bills shouldn’t do any hiring until after the season so they can interview candidates from other organizations that they cannot talk to during the season

Marty Balls VS. The Shanny Family

COME ON DOWN……. LET’S START THE FAMILY FEUD!!!!!!!!
Either option would be better than what we had this year.
But I still would rather have Chin Cower.

What is shanny is head coach

Weis is oc, haslett is dc? I mean that’s obviously a dream scenario, but I don’t think it’s too far fetched, right?

It’s also neigh on impossible thanks to Shanny’s power-mad streak.
