Who are your 5 favorite and least favorite Bills players/coaches of all time?
My all time favorite Bills - Steve Tasker, Joe Cribbs, Reggie McKenzie, Don Beebe and Bruce Smith. There are so many to choose from, but these 5 stand out for me.
Coaches Marv, Chuck Knox, Lou Saban, Joe Collier and Walt Corey.
Jairus Byrd is moving up my list! His recent play, ties to the '80s through his dad and ties to my state of Oregon are making him my current favorite. Brian Moorman, Lee Evans, Fred Jackson and Terrence McGee round out my current fave five.
5 least favorite - Rob Johnson, J.P. Losman, O.J. Simpson, Al Cowlings and Mike Williams.
Least favorite Coaches - Dick Jauron, Hank Bullough, John Rauch, Gegg Williams and Wade Phillips.

Something tells me.......
that a couple of your “least favorite” Bills are more personally related…….then football related……….just a hunch though.

Yeah ....hard to root for a guy like O.J.
or his partner in alleged crime A.C.
Otherwise, Mchgahee and Peters are pretty good choices. Billy Joe Hobert comes to mind as well. Tom Cousineau never actually suited up, but went to Canada instead of the Bills. At least trading him ultimately resulted in Jim Kelly!

See im able to look at OJ the player........and OJ the non-player as two different people....

Rusty Jones
Thurman Thomas was on the fan 590 radio in Toronto this morning. He said that since Rusty Jones (strength and conditioning coach) left Buffalo, that this team has gone downhill. He said the injuries and the second half collapses can be attributed to conditioning. Rusty Jones is now the strength and conditioning coach of the Bears.
He also questioned how soft training camp was. I tried to find a link on their website, but they didn’t post this segment online.
I don’t know much about the program (strength and conditioning) but hearing it from Thurman made me wonder.

That’s because their current strength and conditioning coach, JT, is too busy doing ads for the buffalo and rochester athletic clubs. Who would want to “train like the Bills” if all it leads to is injury?!

Totally agree...
Two of the biggest losses from the Bills FO and Coaches were Rusty Jones and Bill Polian.
Two players that stand-out as major losses were Pat Williams and Antoine Winfield.

How can you put OJ on a list of least favorite players? He was lights out for this team.
Joe Cribbs whined and moaned through half his Buffalo career. Should he be on the favorite list while OJ wallows on least favorite?
My top 5 players will include Frank Reich always and forever.
And what was wrong with Wade Phillips? That guy was such a bastard for taking us to the playoffs, right?

My main problem with Wade
Starting Rob Johnson over Flutie in the playoffs. Creating a QB controversy where there shouldn’t have been one. He is actually a pretty good D-coordinator, but this was one of the worst decisions ever.
I was a kid when Cribbs was the featured back, and didn’t know much about his whining. It was him, Jerry Butler, Fred Smerlas and Frank Lewis that first drew me to the team in ’80 and ’81, so more of a sentimental pick than anything.
As a player, O.J. was obviously a Bills great, but now it’s embarrassing to have him be one of our best ever. Travis Henry is in this category too. He was a tough runner and very underrated, but off the field a total nut.

I can see that – he consistently ran hard, which you have to love. Just can’t help mix the person and the player. That’s the reason I have a few of my bottom five on the list.
by T McGee on Nov 3, 2009 8:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Can't get behind you on Reed
We wouldn’t have the comeback without him. He was tough over the middle and did so much for those late ’80’s early ’90’s Bills. The last year or 2 must have done it for you.
I was too young, but was Leaks a whiner?

I’ll admit, as I said above, a lot of this is personality. As a friend of a former employee at OBD, I got to rub shoulders with a lot of those SB teams – granted, toward the end, not during their 89-92 peak – and was not a fan of ’Dre.
Leaks was – as his name unfortunately dictates – a fumbling machine.
Henry – balls out on the field; a slime off of it. He was no saint in BFLO either, although not to the extreme which he later became known for.

Re: Edwards
You know, I’m not sure how it started. Probably something to do with bad kick returns.
But it snowballed as I became an avid Tecmo player and had to watch him fumble punt returns.

He was damn slow in Tecmo too
I’d always throw Reed or Beebe in at returner because of speed!

wow Joe P
our lists for top 5 are very similar. My number one is also Jack Kemp even though I never saw him play – I just thought he was the man. In many ways he represents what being a leader is all about .
My number two is also Bruce. Hands down the greatest football player I’ve ever seen play. Probably the greatest defender I’ll ever watch as a fan of the Bills. Being a kid, watching Bruce was so exciting because you knew if you just kept your eye on him long enough he was going to do something that made you jump up and down in amazement.
Jim is a good number 3 and Thurman a good number 4.
The only place I disagree with you is that I have Terrence McGee at number 5. This season just makes me appreciate him more. The guy has stayed on the field when just about everyone els has gone down and hes done it hurting and aching. He always plays hard and is the most underrated member of our defense in my opinion. He contains number 1 receivers regularly and he is a class act. Mostly, hes just been a reliable you can always count on me to give you 100% and to play well during this horrible decade of Bills football.
everyone has Travis Henry on their bottom five but I loved having Travis. I hated when McGahee replaced him.
To me, the sucker is the person who runs when there’s trouble, especially when this situation was so easily foreshadowed….

Agree on Henry. Travis was a beast, and had a solid Bills career. Yes he fathered many a child and became a drug user/mule/dealer, but the later was after he left the Bills.

McGee is a good pick ,but I went with Tasker because he re-defined the position...best gunner ever IMO.
Travis played well for us, but was a dbag. Just look at what he has become.

I grew up with the Marv Levy era Bills, so I have a lot of great memories of getting excited watching those guys. My favorite on offense was Andre Reed, and on D was definitely Darryl Talley with his spiderman spandex. Cornelius Bennett was a close second along with Bruuuuuce who kind of scared me but was fascinating.
Rounding out the list were Don Beebe, Frank Reich, Thurman, and Jim Kelly. Identifying any line players was definitely over my head. I didn’t dislike anybody in those days except for Bryan Cox of the Dolphins :)
I kind of took a break from the Bills during college and went from fandom to disdain, so my list of least favorites mostly comes from that time:
Rob Johnson (I was a Flutie fan)
Willis MacGahee
Losman
Roscoe
TO
I can’t dislike anybody for not measuring up as a player, for me its all about attitude, and these guys need/needed an adjustment.

Attitude is a big theme
How can you dislike someone like Tasker, Kelly, Reich, Talley etc. who bring a toughness and great attitude to the field? A common theme among the least favorite is whining, being a prima donna or just not living up to the hype.

Norwood had 1 bad play that sticks in everyone's head
How many bad plays did Rob (Robosack) Johnson have? How many game-ruining turnovers did J.P. have. Include the trades and picks wasted to get them and it really compounds. Norwood was a free agent who performed at a pro bowl level for a long time. He didn’t single handedly lose that game. A heartbreaking moment, but a solid career.
Crummy play for wasted high draft picks could be a sub-category of suckiness: Mike Williams, Perry Tuttle, Walt Patulski, Phil Dokes etc.

Don't your rememeber all the bad passes and dropped balls that lead to that rather long field goal.....yes it was
a long field goal at that time. I love Norwood and so did the fans, even after he missed that kick.
