Orakpo is the real thing
I sure hope Perry finds a way to get Maybin more reps and more involved. I still think that Orakpo was the better choice but it's too late now... He sure is lighting it up in Washington!

I just vomited, then as I was cleaning up the vomit, my head exploded.

?
What?
I have nothing left to say, these Bills have sucked me dry of any hope. Loosing to a team that completes 2-17 for 23y with 1 INT, that is beyond pitiful!

I think he is saying he is tired of having this conversation :-)

Sorry Eric but I have avoided weighing in on this issue all season because I think you need at least 6-8 games to form an informed opinion. Now after the midpoint, it’s pretty clear that Orakpo would have been a way better pick for us.
I won’t bring it up again, scout’s honor!

7 sacks in 7 games
Imagine if we’d have drafted Orakpo & Byrd
Orakpo: 1 sack per game
Byrd: 2 INTs per game
A real Dynamic Duo.

I really thought we’d draft Orakpo… big mistake if you’re looking to “win now”… and not just in retrospect. I tried at the time to get behind Maybin and what we could do with him all over the field, but Jauron WAS (that feels nice) inept at utilizing the full potential of players until they made it to the field because of injury… hopefully we’ll see a better future

I don’t know that you can hang Maybin’s lack of playing time on Jauron. Fewell was the defensive coordinator. Now that he’s theoretically calling the shots I’d be surprised if we see Maybin get all that much more playing time. Don’t misunderstand; I’d love to see Maybin take his lumps as the starting DE given that the season is lost.
Orakpo is proving himself to be the real deal. Let’s bear in mind a couple of things about him. First, the consensus was that Orakpo was terrific at times and invisible at other times with the overall thought being that the issue was motivational. While Orakpo has been highly motivated in the NFL there was no way to know that that would be the case back in April. Second, Orakpo is, like me, a UT alum. Fairly or not UT alums have a collective reputation of being coddled and/or lazy. Buffalo had some up close experience with UT alums in Mike Williams and Dock.
I don’t blame the Bills for passing on Orakpo. The team couldn’t afford to take a shot on a guy who may or may not give his all on the field. That doesn’t mean that I believe that Maybin was the right choice or that Maybin will be a better pro someday than Orakpo. It just means that Buffalo had reasons for passing on Orakpo.
Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

perhaps they had their reasons
but they have failed to take the best player available so far… just agreeing with Keysh on this one. I wanted Orakpo too

Orakpo is the real thing
Sure seems like a good start for him. time will tell on Maybin – but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s another 1st round blunder by the Bills (Losman, McCargo, Williams)

I still have faith in Maybin. Unlike many DE busts, he has the work ethic. He has the talent. After a year in NFL conditioning he should be good to go. Despite this, we need to work him in more to the lineup. Any chance we could use both Denny AND Kelsay as rotational DTs, and then put Maybin in Kelsay’s DE spot?

Orakpo is not
doing anything unexpected. He is going to be very good possibly a consistent impact player. But he is playing on a defense with Haynesworth and Fletcher. Haynesworth does a lot of disrupting and puts offenses in 3rd and long situations which are perfect for pass rushing. Also, London Fletcher is an excellent defensive QB. That man can line up a defense. Not to take anything away from Orakpo, but he is benefiting from some serious leadership. Also, he plays just about every down, while Maybin is stuck in a rotation.
When it comes to pass rushers i think the impact players are what you want. people who cannot be stopped when you need them to rise up to the challenge: Reggie White, Bruce Smith, etc. Derrick Thomas was a sack meister who could be shut out. He tended to do well when there were others who could take the pressure of him. I still think it is yet to be seen if Orakpo can be a consistent impact player. I think he can. I really like him.
Truth is I could live with both, Maybin or Orakpo. Anyway, it was a definite winning pick for Washington and I hope it’ll turn out to be a winner for us.

Excellent point!
Haynesworth makes people around him better. Orakpo also has the advantage of playing opposite Carter, who is also a sack machine this year!

If we have drafted Orakpo
And signed Haynesworth and line them up along side Carter. We could be the 3-6 Redskins. I’ll take Maybin and the 3-6 Bills.

I was going to say something similar. For all the stats that Orakpo is piling up and the reputation that Haynesworth brings, they sure haven’t helped the team win many games.

Orakpo's stat line against Dallas
2 tackles, 0 Sacks. This is without Hayneworth.
