Best Future Coach...
FINALLY Jauron is out... so what next? This is my list...
1. Mike Shanahan - Excellent QB coach, made stars out of Jake Plummer and Jay Cutler, both mediocre QBs at best. Dealt with Brandon Marshall and Elway as huge stars very well. Solid record and a great fit. Likes the ground game, but develops QBs.
2. Marty Schottenheimer - Although he was dumped by San Diego, he has a solid record and coached the Chiefs to better marks than they deserved. Proven winner and leader. Played for the Bills, as did the next guy on the list. Will pass the torch to his son when he retires, consistency is a huge plus.
3. Jim Haslett - Great motivator, did well building the Saints before he was dumped. Some of New Orleans current success must be attributed to his tenure. He was an outstanding Linebacker for Buffalo that played with heart and never quit on plays, the Bills could use that attitude right now with T. O. and others just walking away and not playing until the whistle blows. What ever happened to guys like Steve Tasker who gave it all for us? Haslett can change the attitude. Step one? get rid of the overpaid, unproductive T. O. immediately unless he wants to re- sign for 1 million or less next season, which will not happen.
4. Bill Cowher, John Gruden - neither of these guys is leaving the broadcast booth.
5. Mike Holmgren - Wants to run a team as GM or president... not going to happen with Ralf around.

Why do you attribute that success to him? It’s been three years hasn’t it? He didn’t have Drew Brees or a great offense.

They have said that they’d give a coach as much $$ and responsibility that they want to get them. So I don’t know why you and others are still listing off that Ralph won’t give in to coaches who want GM power. Have you been under a rock? Also…. this is like the 12th post about who the next coach will be

I actually agree with BuffKing that Ralph wouldn’t give out HC and GM responsibilities to the same guy. There have been multiple reports that Ralph is looking for a football guy to run the FO too. The good news is that I think Holmgren is the only guy who would demand both titles. Shanahan is going to want a GM to play second fiddle to him and I think Ralph would go for that. Cowher is a guy who might want the GM hat as well, but I don’t think he’d leave CBS to come to Buffalo. Most insider type reports are saying that Cowher is leaning towards not coming back to the NFL this year.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

I’d add Jim Harbaugh of Stanford and Russ Grimm of the Cardinals to that list.
If we can get a GM like Eric deCosta of the Ravens and have a blue collar offensive minded coach – whether they have previous NFL Head Coach experience or not – then we go a long way forward.
What they say about Harbaugh’s Stanford is they either beat you …. or beat you up :)

Haslett Sucks
Seriously, the Saints had a bit of a fluky run under him, but the team was soon ripped apart by dissension. there’s a reason he’s in the UFL and not the NFL.
Any one else on this list would be great, but not Haslett. he’s a proven loser in the NFL.

He was a coach of the year once. Just like Jauron. :-)

Mike Shanahan
I think Shanahan is the best option for Buffalo. Like you said, he can install a productive offense with a mediocre QB. He is obviously very talented as an offensive coordinator.
Also, I don’t buy the fact that Bill Cowher was all that good of a coach. The Steelers have unbelievable guys in their front office. Their ability to draft good players is amazing. Mike Tomlin is having very similar if not better success than Cowher did.
Haslett is not any better than Jauron. I don’t know too much about Marty, but I get the sense that he wouldn’t know how to fix our offense or draft better players. And Mike Holmgren as a GM is not a good option. He doesn’t have very good experience

I think I agree with everything you said.
Cowher reminds me of Levy – good front office so he can just play schemes – plus he had Dick LeBeau running his defense.
I would argue that, this young in his career, that Tomlin is having more success as well. He has already won a SB – one more and he’s already beaten Cowher. However, Cowher won year after year.
