The GM Sweepstakes

Forget about the HC job for now. The focus needs to be on a new GM, as Brian has repeatedly reminded us and as Larry Felser tells us in the piece in today’s Buff News (see link above). Felser says we need above all else to bring in a consultant like Ernie Accorsi, the former Giants longtime GM, to serve as a consultant who will evaluate where things stand at OBD and identify a pool of talent. That makes terrific sense to me, and I am a little worried that that does not seem to be happening (perhaps it is and we don’t know about it yet).

Or perhaps the Bills could save a step and simply set their sights on Dave Gettleman, the Giants pro personnel director who Accorsi recommended that the Browns hire as their GM this past year. They were stupid and ignored his advice, bringing in Mangenius as a HC instead with disastrous results (it’s what happens when you go for the HC first). The PFW piece also talks about Gettleman as a top prospect. He was a former college scout for the Bills back in the Polian years and now does pro scouting, so he’s seen it all. He also has the job of scouting the Giants’ opponents in advance and going over the tape with the coaching staff each Monday, so he understands the game inside out. And he’s a former college OT, so he gets the critical importance of the o and d-lines. Hire him!
