You would think Jacksonville would move before Buffalo.

I found it extremely funny to watch a 5-4 team probably fill only 40% of their seats. Did anyone else notice that. They even had one section behind the endzone sealed off (with a Jaguar logo) to probably help sell the games out.  I wonder how much tickets are?

You would have to think if any team is moving it would have to be Jacksonville. I don't even think they sold out their home opener. Buffalo has great fans and I think we should give ourselves a pat on the back. We support this team like no other (maybe Green Bay) even through the toughest of times. We are due for a good season soon, and hopefully with a new coach its within the next couple years. I'd bet we see the Ralph almost full this Sunday and we are 3-7. It was funny to see a playoff caliber team (wildcard perhaps) not even come close to selling out their stadium when their team was 5-4.

Why did they even put a Franchise in Jacksonville? You think they could of done a little more research before establishing a team with no fan base or willingness to watch NFL football. This team is usually pretty solid and its a shame that they cannot sell out their games.

With the new stadium opening up in L.A, you would have to think Jacksonville would be their number one option for relocation. Any guy with business sense that buys the team after Ralph dies will realize Buffalo is a cash cow. We sell out every year with horrible football teams and horrible games to watch. Just think if this team made the playoffs, the city would go crazy! I believe once the new owner looks at the records, he will quickly realize it will be a better investment to keep Buffalo in Buffalo. It would cost him an extra fortune just to move the team (due to relocation fees and perhaps a new stadium). His real priority should be making this team good again. Then he can still sell out all the games at slightly higher prices. IMO, I don't see Buffalo moving, mainly because of us and how well we support our team. So keep it up Bills fans!

you would think.....

it might have something to do with the fact that our ticket prices are among the lowest in the nation. Plus you don’t get the same kind of marketing ability as in a bigger city. Seriously i bet i am the only person in hawaii with a bills jersey.

You think that's funny?

Wait until the final few home games this year when Bills fans don’t show up to the Ralph or it’s filled with Patriots fans. I can’t imagine what the crowd will look like during the Indy game assuming Indy loses a game before. Yikes.

Buffalo isn’t a cash cow. Just because the stadium sells out doesn’t means huge cash inflows or net revenue. The tickets are the cheapest in the NFL, roughtly $24 below the league average. If Ralph bumped those prices up to the NFL average, I’m guessing there wouldn’t be too many sellouts.

They put a franchise in Jax partially because they saw the area as an opportunity. It was a growing area that the NFL viewed as a place to take advantage of. They were right in that the city is growing. Since 1990, the Jax metropolitan area has added roughly 400,000 people. The city itself is now the 13th largest city in the country. It’s a football mad area that the NFL thought would translate into a strong following. It started well, but the following is obviously lagging right now. I wouldn’t say it was a bad decision to put a team there.

Give the Jags a few years.

I was… six or seven when Jacksonville was awarded a franchise. I was a fan from the get go. Now, I am in college and sadly cannot afford the tickets. Give few a few months after I graduate, and I’ll be buying season tickets (hopefully). Really, Jacksonville is a very young team. Back when most teams were this young, stadiums we’re 50,000+… still, not a great excuse… but give the Jags fans time and the stadium will be sold out for years. Jacksonville has more land than any other US city, and is still growing by leaps and bounds. The future is pointed up – though all the media wants to look at is the now.

I read the bills made the 3rd most money last year in the NFL, just behind, Dallas and New England. Ticket prices are not everything. There is food, Jerseys, beer, etc.. I realize they have the lowest ticket prices. But you cannot doubt the great fans and the support. But if anyone was to move right now, Jac would top the list. It doesnt matter that they have a big city, it seems they’re not a football town.

by csc06258 on Nov 23, 2009 1:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Where did you read that?

Because there is no way its true.

The link I gave you indicated the Bills having the cheapest Fan Cost Index, which is basically the average cost for a family of four to attend a game with minor amenities and concession purchases. With that, there is absolutely ZERO chance that the Bills are bringing in more cash than nearly every other team.

The Bills and Jaguars have similar financial situations. From a quick google search, at the end of the 2007 season, both teams had revenues in the low $200M ($206M for Buf, $204M for Jax), similar debt to equity ratios and similar current values (high $800M’s). The Jags had a higher operating income by about $15M.

You can’t just make blanket statements about financial situations by discussing fan support as the reason for viability. $ is all that counts, and both teams are in similar shape.

I forget exactly where I read it, I think it was a link on twobillsdrive. and listen, I didn’t want to try to start a fight with you. I just thought it was comical to see a team that has a good record with a playoff chance not even fill 40% of their seats. I know a bunch of us were laughing when we were watching the game

Bills 26 in value, Jags 29
Revenue they are 25th
11th in Operating Income

Bills and the Jags are in the same area money-wise. Only one of the two towns has a growing economy while the other is hemorraghing people.

They had a ton of cap space after last season

top 5-10….maybe it was 3rd?

Other than that, I think you just misread something.

I know what you’re recalling. :)

It was from this past year’s Forbes report. Buffalo, New England and Tampa Bay were the three franchises that gained the most financially from 2008 to 2009. That’s all it was.

I was talking to my friend and he said that even though it says Bills are 26, that is just Revenue, not total profit. Profit wise the Bills are cash cows due to their lower costs of operations and etc.

by csc06258 on Nov 23, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They are 11th in the league in total profit “operating income”. The Bills made just under 40M last year. If they had to pay for a new stadium all that money would be gone. Just a little note.

also, I was at the Bears preseason game and it was a full house. How many teams pack their stadium for a preseason game? I didn’t make it to the Detriot one but my dad also said it was pretty crowded

Most teams do

especially when so many free tickets are given out to families and children.

Why is it extremely funny to you?

It’s sad.

And I would think that we of all people who have the spectre of relocation hanging over our heads would realize that.
How do you think the fans of that team who show up to their games feel when you say they don’t deserve a franchise and should move?

Look I didn’t think it was a good idea to put a franchise there in the first place but what’s done is done. And constantly mocking them for not selling out games and pretty much rooting for them to move is awful. A team like Dallas can do that but we should know better. Especially since they have been one of the more amiable organizations diplomatically with the Bills, we often trade with them etc.

I wassn’t mocking them. They’re a good team. I am just saying I think its funny how no one goes to the games when they are even winning. It wasn’t a mock towards the fans. I was just stating the obvious

We also have the lowest ticket prices in the league and not many luxury suites. The new owner of the Bills could make twice as much even if they don’t sell out in LA.

Minnesota

Is most likely to move there. They have already said that they will not renew with their current stadium/contracts and the city is more strapped for cash then Buffalo is, hence they will be very unlikely able to meet their demands. It’s sad, but someone has to move there, and as long as it’s not the Bills I’ll be ok.

Yeah it really sucks for the Vikings because unlike Buffalo and Jacksonville, Mini is a great football market with a very sucessful team, it would suck to have to see them move.

Funny how? Like a clown? Do they amuse you? Funny how?

Just kidding…had to throw that in there.

Time will tell with the Bills and the Jags. You say the Bills are a better investment in Buffalo – from a purley financial standpoint, I have to disagree, but hopefully for us our future owner will realize that this is more than a business and more than an investment. If someone gets involved only for the money then we’re in trouble. The same goes for all small market teams.

Below is a comment by Rudy916 and my response to his comment.

The Jags have been in the playoffs… Please do not take this as an attack. But here are the facts I am aware of:

You have been in the playoffs at least 7 years out of a 13 year history. The bills will be on a 10 year drought.

Stadium seating per Wikipedia says 67,164 after you apply the tarps. The bills stadium holds 73,967. You can’t tell me the tarps are to size the stadium to the market. The bills stadium is average size. You have 7,000 less seats and don’t even come close to selling out games.

I don’t understand how you can’t sell seats to a winning team? I understand the market your in with the college teams and other pro franchises nearby. But please help me understand how you dont think your team won’t move. In the end it is about making money. If your not selling out 67,000 seats to a winning team, the team will move and sell 80,000 seats in LA for almost double what a ticket costs in Jacksonville. Buffalo may be a bad team, but right now we sell our games out (with overall profits much less than other teams). The only reason buffalo appears on the moving list is due to an old owner who graces our presence with his remaining days.

7 games and counting!!!

by Rudy916 on Nov 22, 2009 9:42 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs

No offense taken. I don’t think the fact that other pro teams being near by is the problem. I think the problem is the fact that our fans are "fickle" which I stated above. There are no excuses for not selling out the games. The fact that we have a winning team is a misnomer. With the jobless rate in Jacksonville being at 13%, and the team having an up and down roller coaster type existence, the fans in and around Jacksonville have become uninterested. With consistency the team will begin to sell out. Until that happens there will continue to be blackouts.

There are not enough hardcore fans for the NFL game that are willing to attend. With that being said, the numbers in TV ratings consistently show that Jax is an NFL town, but the people are not willing to put their money on the line to enjoy one of the greatest entertainment values in the entire country. It cost $400 for a season ticket. With $20 parking, and one of the easiest commutes to and from a stadium in the league.

Another thing I agree with is that a team will move if it’s not financially viable to remain in a particular location. What has been largely underreported is the fact that the Raiders, Rams, Bucs, and Lions have been just as inept to sell tickets. Now you can argue that they are all teams with losing records. However, there are somethings to consider. First, is that most teams move due to stadium issues. Currently, that applies to the Raiders, 49ers, Bolts, and I think Rams. Anyone of those teams moving to LA would be great because they already have an established following on the West coast, not to mention it would not upset the apple cart when it comes having to realign the current divisions in the NFL. Second, If the Jags were to move there it would cost a fortune to break the lease in which the team is currently in. Thirdly, I believe that if they were to move it would be to London. According to Goodell, that would happen within the next 10 years.

In that time frame, with the state of the Jags franchise having their arrow pointing up, I think before the end of the season we will see a stoppage to the blackouts with momentum building to the future. I also think that with proposed games being played in Orlando as soon as next year, and the fact that the Bills with similar thinking of splitting games in Toronto, that both teams will be safe from relocation.

I say all this with genuine belief that it will get better with time in Jax, and not with teal shaded glasses. Although anything can happen.

Don’t forget the Chargers on both counts. I think they are ultimately the team that moves to LA if any do. [Edit – just saw you had bolts down for the stadium issue. They haven’t sold out all their games either.]
