Bills reach out to Cowher
The Buffalo Bills, who are expected to meet with Mike Shanahan this week about their head coaching position, have also contacted former Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Cowher, according to league sources.
Cowher informed the team that he is not interested in speaking to any clubs about potential jobs until after the season, however, according to the sources, and he could have several options available to him should he opt to return to coaching in 2010.

Translation........I am going and see if Fox gets canned.
I think Polian must have put a curse on the Bills when he left. Anyone know where we can get a live Buffalo to sacrifice on the 50 yards line? Or, maybe we should use a Dolphin ??? Preferably, Nick Buoniconti

I think Cowher isn’t coaching next year unless Carolina opens up or he can find a great gig. I’ve seen Schefter and some other guys say they don’t think he’ll be coaching next year.

I don’t think Cowher would object to Buffalo. It’s close to Pittsburgh, and i’m sure he has good roots there. I could see it as a possibility for him, geographically. Oakland, now that’d be a different story.

It’s not so much that I think Cowher would object to Buffalo, I think Cowher will turn down any and every NFL job that isn’t Carolina or maybe a great situation like San Diego. I think he’ll spend another year with the family, waiting for the Carolina job to open up before getting back into coaching.

apparetnly he has roots with Tom Modrak, our worst draft guy. If he comes it could be because of Modrak and his influence. Hopefully Cowher knows a little more than Modrak does about drafting players.

At Least
At least they seem serious getting a top level coach in here. Can’t fault there actions so far. I don’t think Fox stands much of a chance here in Carolina and I know they would love Cowher.

Did anyone else here Sully on WGR earlier?
I don’t remember exactly all he said, but he apparently has a reliable source who told him that Shanahan has said he would listen to, but not likely accept a position with the Bills. Supposedly he’s waiting to see what happens in Chi-town, as he’d like to go there.

He’d be stupid not to wait and see about Chicago, Dallas, and about half a dozen other jobs open. Teams with QBs (San Diego, Houston, Chicago) could have job openings.

Chicago can conceivably lose 4 out of their last 6 games. Finishing 6-10 would give Lovie Smith his second worst season as a head coach…and may cost him his job. Jay Cutler has turned into a interception machine, which hasn’t helped. Blaming the coach is a tried and true method for a GM to deflect any criticism.

Finally, something about Marty (although not much)
Via Mort’s most recent tweets:
Even though the Bills are taking their shots at Shanahan & Cowher, one name under discussion is Marty Schottenheimer, as well.
Marty will stick to party line – he’s retired. But could be persuaded. Marv Levy was still winning @ 70; Marty 66 & Ralph Wilson Jr. 9

I have a funny feeling we will get shafted.
I do not believe any coach will come to this team. Shanahan will wait till after the season to make his decision. I just think these guys are too “big” to come. I hope they do but I could see them going to other ball clubs. If Ralph is willing to pay 10 mil like I read, then maybe that will work, time will tell but I have a bad feeling no one will come.

Agreed. If Detroit can begin succeeding with Schwartz (not exactly a no-name, but not a big name either) and a rookie stud QB, it could happen in Buffalo. Could being the operative word.

I don’t think that’s the right term. I fully expect all “name” head coaches to turn this franchise down, so it’s hard to call it getting shafted…

I’m starting to agree more and more w/ Galliford on this. Let’s get the front office organized first, like hiring a true football GM , then let him pick the coach. That’s the path w/ the most success IMO.
I saw on the WGRZ site that Marty said he is retired and has no interest?

I’m just glad we’re able to openly discuss the next coach. I spent the last 3.5 years in a moral conundrum. I never really liked the Jauron hiring, but the only way to get rid of him was to lose games, which I could never bring myself to do.
All the top, super bowl winning, coaches that we’re looking at have one of two things in common: they won behind a legitimate franchise quarterback, or an incredibly dominant defense. I just hope whoever comes in can help build either of those in Buffalo.
Also, I like Mike Zimmer, the DC of the Bengals as a potential sleeper candidate. He’s kind of the opposite of Jauron in intensity, but he runs a similar scheme, which means we wouldn’t need to change all our defensive personnel right away.

Lose baby lose!!!
Maybe Cowher/Shanny are waiting to see how high the Bills draft pick goes before they decide. I believe that these guys know how to get O-lines built.
His first few seasons in Pittsburgh, Cowher was getting decent production from a O-line consisting of either low round draft picks or quality free agents…all with Neil O’Donnell as his QB.

I still think it could end up being Cowher. He’s being a complete gentelman to Fewell, CBS, and even not wanting to bring a duel about with Shanahan. I like the cut of his jib, as they say.
I know the likelihood of him coming to coach here is still slim to none, at best but I think he’s the most realistic option in the Bills fantasy coach league. They should hopefully be taking this time to look at the front office. Didn’t Cowher state he doesn’t want that responsibility if he comes back?
