The Office
This is completely off the topic of football. I noticed over the last two years or so that a good bunch of you guys are fans of the show The Office. I'll admit - I had never given the show a shot (I'm really selective about my TV habits). Well, lately, I've been catching reruns here and there, and find the show to be one of the funniest things I've ever watched in my life. I'm literally pissed at myself for never having given the show a chance before. Anyway, I have a question for you guys. How should I watch this show going forward? Do I buy the first few seaons, and watch nothing but that until I catch up? Do I just start DVRing the hell out of the show? Is there a best of cd that I can get? Any help is a bonus here fellas. Thanks in advance...

That’s what I did to catch up. The first season is really hit and miss but the second and subsequent seasons are awesome. You can watch the current ones but you will have no idea on some of the backstories. :-)

Watch the original version starring Ricky Gervais first.
I really did not like it myself, but i have never seen the US version
The past is fixed, the future is unknown, try dealing with the present!
I’ve seen one episode of the British version, and it has done nothing to suck enjoyment out of the US version for me.
Kry – feel free to skip season 1. It’s only six epis, and the only discernible plot line you need to be aware of from it is that Jim really, really digs Pam. The rest you can pick up starting in Season 2.

I agree that the first season doesn’t actually have a plot line, but “Diversity Day” and “The Alliance” are two of the funnier episodes the show ever had. I don’t know if they are worth buying the DVD for, but if you’re going to netfilcks route, or just DVR’ing everything in site, I wouldn’t dismiss the first season.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute
Now all you need to do is watch Lost and you will get all of our off-the-wall references.

I read a spoiler today – yes, I hate myself – but it absolutely blew my effing mind.

I still need to watch that. My wife doesn’t want to get involved. I think when the show is done I might just go do the whole thing on Netflix.

Thanks guys. BG – thanks for saving me the time to skip the Brit version. Kaiser – will definitely see those two episodes if you refer them. Sireric – come on man; I can’t multi-task TV. Introducing me to Lost now would blow my brains up. From what I’ve seen so far, jj24’s assessment is dead on..
While there are linear storylines, the true greatness of this show is in its intra-episode humor.
I normally hate comedies
But I love the Office, Parks and Recreation and Community probably in that order. I really like them because the first two especially have a pseudo realism element to them. Like in sitcoms your immediately taken out of them because people are in these big mansions/skyscrapers/elaborate beach towns/club and in these shows you have an office, a town hall in the middle of a small indiana town, and a community college.

I’ve had Ron F’n Swanson as my profile pic here for about a month now. Parks might be my favorite show on TV.

yeah Ron is the man
The other characters start to grow on you too though, and at the beginning I didn’t think they would.

S1 was awful. I gave it a shot this year – it’s on right before The Office, after all – and have enjoyed it immensely, to the point where I now look forward to it more than I look forward to The Office.
Put another way, Parks has filled the void I expected FlashForward to fill. Holy crap, FlashForward sucks.

Yeah I was turned off by season 1 of Parks. Watching it now is hilarious. Like the day Ron was stuck in his chair the whole day LOL
