Inactive Thoughts: Week 11

Trying to figure the inactives is starting to get like a joke with the number of injuries.  This week we know Demetrius Bell, John McCargo, and Ashton Youboty have all been ruled out.  Marcus Stroud and Terrence McGee have been labeled as questionable after missing the game last week.  At least Stroud was moving and doing some individual workouts on Friday.  Fewell is quoted as saying he is "on the probable side of questionable".

Steve Johnson, James Hardy, and Joe Klopfenstein were the healthy scratches last week and not a whole lot has changed on that front. Unless Roscoe Parrish gets sat down again (which would actually make me pretty happy) I can't see them activating Hardy or Johnson.

Here's my list in orde of least likely to play to most likely to play:

Star-divide

Demetrius Bell
John McCargo
Ashton Youboty
James Hardy
Joe Klopfenstein
Steve Johnson
Terrence McGee

Brian Brohm will be the emergency QB.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Cut Roscoe

It’s time not only to make Roscoe inactive but to cut him from the roster. Again and again he has proved this year that he is totally worthless. The chance of getting anything for him in a trade at this point is about zero. I also don’t see why we continue to activate that sixth string safety whose name I can’t remember (and don’t want to know) instead of Hary and Steve Johnson. With Whitner back we now have a surplus of guys at that position. Perhaps the nameless sixth stringer plays a role on ST, but there is also something called “Offence.”

Todd Johnson is probably the guy you are thinking about. The simple thing is seeing the field. Hardy wouldn’t see the field at all. Johnson would only see it on special teams probably so why keep them when you got a safety who is much more used to tackling?

Yes, Todd Johnson was the guy.

My point is that we need to get Hardy and Johnson on the field to see what we have in them. Also, it’s very possible they could both help us on offense if AVP used them creatively. For example, put Hardy out there with T.O. and Shawn Nelson and in effect flood the middle of the field with tall targets for Fitz. I’m not suggesting we do that on every play, but once in a while it would give opposing defenses something to think about.

Hardy and Johnson are 4th on the WR depth chart at best. With Roscoe active for his punt return “skills” you would need to have a 5th WR dressed. Why even both when you have Jackson lining up out there, too, and that WR gives you little on ST?

But I want to see Roscoe inactive (as I believe you do). Also, if you are nearing the end of the season and need to get a look at some young players in order to evaluate talent for your roster you forget about who is where on the depth chart and put Hardy and Johnson in on occasional plays in place of Reed, T.O. and even Evans. 80 to 85% of the time you go with your depth chart, 15 to 20% of the time you don’t. Teams do this all the time. It also allows you to have different looks on offense to keep the opposing defense guessing.

I don’t want to see Roscoe active. I liked it when Freddy was returning punts.

I think Steve Johnson could play on specials. I spent all offseason predicting that he would win a punt gunner job for this season after he looked pretty good at it in a few games last year. If nothing else, his coverage ability would be a bigger upgrade over the rest of the roster than Roscoe’s return abilities.

I agree with you. They like Jenkins and Corto doing it, though. We’ll see. I hate really dislike watching Roscoe out there at all anymore.

It’s not like Johnson needs to be gunning punts to play on special teams though. If we think that Jackson is a better returner than Parrish, then Johnson provides infinitely more on special teams, even as a crappy guy on kick coverage and as a blocker on kick returns.

I do agree that Johnson isn’t likely to be active over Parrish though. Even though he should be.

All of that is why I didn’t get it when everyone was blasting Jauron for doing it. If I had my way Roscoe would be inactive every game because I think he adds nothing.

I definitely thought Johnson would be one of the gunners

mostly to get him active on gamedays at WR too.

Of course, none of us thought Justin Jenkins would still be around…..

And Jenkins has done a good job on ST, wouldn’t you agree? It’s made the decision hard.

Not only will Klopfenstein not play, he’s been released.

Corey Mace, who took Klop’s spot on the active roster, will be inactive if Stroud can go. If not, Mace will likely be inactive.
