Which NFL Team would you Least Like to Play for?
In the lastest edition of SI, dated November 30, 2009. Players voted on which team they would least like to play for. The five teams that made this list are:
Would anyone care to guess the rankings among these? Ok......I'm bad at building the suspense. Here are the results:
Oakland Raiders 20%
Buffalo Bills 14%
Green Bay Packers 13%
Detroit Lions 12%
Cleveland Browns 7%
I wasn't shocked to see Oakland or Detroit on this list, but the Packers did shock me. The Poll goes on to explain that the least desirable among players in the league for five or fewer seasons was GB at 16%.
This Poll really shows how league players feel the Bills are a bottom dweller in the league. Any Bills fan who feels insulted by this poll needs a reality check. WE NEED AN ORGANIZATIONAL OVERHAUL. How can fans really feel spending $10 million on a coach/GM isn't worth the money. Obviously, we need changes and being frugal won't secure an elite candidate (IF they choose us). I think it is the classic Blue collar mentality that we can't afford to spend alot. Ralph has money, may not be as much as Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder, but god bless him for finally wanting to spend whatever it takes to turn the franchise around!!!
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I don’t know that any fans are griping about Wilson saying that he’s willing to spend $10 million per year on a coach. I also don’t know that (m)any fans are complaining about the changes that are coming to the front office.
I’m kind of surprised to see the Packers on the list as they’ve been competitive for quite some time. My guess is it has something to do with the way in which the team gave Favre the shoe. After all, if Green Bay can send him packing then how safe would their job ever be? As for the others, including Buffalo, the list includes teams which haven’t been competitive in a while. Winning consistently would remove any of those teams from the list.
Even the stink that pervades Oakland would dissapate with enough wins.

I tried to find this last week.
There’s much more to do with players’ not wanting to play for the Bills than the team itself. It’s not a destination, nor is Cleveland or Green Bay, or even Detroit. It was ground-breaking when Reggie White signed with GB.
The Raiders stand out to me as the one team that players wish to avoid like the plague primarily because of the organization. Imagine how Richard Seymour feels right now.

I thought Reggie White was ground breaking because he was the first blockbuster free agent signing by anyone, anywhere.

I agree with that somewhat. The players may factor in the town a lot when signing somewhere.

What I found surprising was the Bills, GB, and Detroit were all with 2%. I at least thought players would choose us over Detriot, hands down. Guess I was wrong

Cities
I think it has a lot to do with the cities also. Most NFL players are either from warm places or from big cities. Buffalo, Cleveland, Green Bay are all smaller cities with cold weather. Detroit is cold and the city is in bad shape. Oakland’s the only exception which shows how bad things are there.
But ultimately winning trumps geopgraphy. Pittsburgh and Indianapolis aren’t exactly major media markets but you don’t see them on this list. If you build a winning foundation, free agents will gladly come.

The Packers have a winning foundation
That’s what confuses me.

They have a winning tradition, but...
They’ve only made the playoffs once in the last 5 years. Players who play there seem to enjoy it, but it’s still a tiny city in the middle of nowhere, so I can see where players from other teams wouldn’t want to go there.

That is ridiculous skewing of statistics
They made the playoffs 5 years in a row, then missed two years, went to the NFC Championship Game the next year, missed last year and are very likely to make it this year. So if they do go to the playoffs, then that will be seven out of 10 for the decade adn of course we all know how well they did in the nineties. The reason I said that they have a winning foundation though, is because they look to have a bright future. I understand that playing in the cold and that the Ted Thompson doesn’t believe in binging on free agents but if they want to win year in and year out then Green Bay is the place to go.

I wonder how many current Bills voted for the Bills on this poll.

Poll states players could not vote for thier own team.
Based on a survey of 296 players.
Didn’t notice that number till now. That calculates to 5.58 full nfl rosters or 9.25 players per team. So this poll could be miss leading if only 6 teams were polled. But I still think the original point holds up that the Bills are not a desirable destination.
7 games and counting!!!
This poll was probably taken right after Jauron was fired.
Because the bills appeared to be in a state of disarray.
Right....as opposed to now :-)
I think Polian must have put a curse on the Bills when he left. Anyone know where we can get a live Buffalo to sacrifice on the 50 yards line? Or, maybe we should use a Dolphin ??? Preferably, Nick Buoniconti
how can you conclude this is ablout winning
and then say how “suprised” you are that Green Bay is equal to us on that list? Its about location for Green Bay and Buffalo, players here about how we play in the tundra and they dont want to come whether its fair or not. We arent the coldest weather teams in the league but we are portrayed as being in the middle of nowhere.

It is about winning, above all.
But many players do come from warm weather areas and I’m sure would rather not play in the cold.
7 games and counting!!!
This is all about winning. If we start becoming a winning football team again, we will be attractive yet again for free agents and draft picks.

I couldn’t say it any better myself. We can’t just blame Ralph Wilson, Dick Jauron or John Guy every time we sign a Langston Walker type instead of going out and getting the established Pro Bowler. The Bills have free agency limitations that go beyond the prevailing opinion that Ralph is cheap.
This Poll really shows how league players feel the Bills are a bottom dweller in the league
I disagree with you on this one though. I think Poz is right that this is mostly about weather. If you think of cold, snowy NFL cities, two teams are going to jump into the minds of fans and players alike and those are Green Bay and Buffalo. I think the fact that Buffalo only got one more percent of the vote than Green Bay shows that Buffalo’s vote is mostly about weather. If it were just about how bad of an organization it is, Oakland would get way more of the vote. No player would choose Oakland over Buffalo if weather and the reputation of the city wasn’t a factor.

Kasier – how many Pro Bowl types hit the market? Don’t blame them for signing Langston Walker when he was one of the top two tackles in free agency that year if I’m not mistaken.

I thought that was what I was trying to say? I said that Buffalo has natural limitations and we shouldn’t blame Ralph Wilson if big time free agents choose to go elsewhere.
Langston Walker was just the first overpaid, average player that came to mind. I agree that there are only so many great players available each year and the list of teams trying to sign them is much longer than the list of great players available.

I’m saying it has nothing to do with Buffalo. Pro Bowl type players just don’t come on the market very often. If they do they are usually past their prime.

We saw Haynesworth, Jason Brown, Bart Scott, Chris Canty and TJ Houshmandzadeh all switch teams last year. And Asante Samuel, Gibril Wilson, Michael Turner, Justin Smith, Alan Faneca and Bernard Berrian weren’t resigned the year before.
When I say “Pro Bowl type players”, I’m not talking about guys who have literally been to a Pro Bowl, I’m just referencing the top tier of free agents. The highly sought after guys who get huge contracts. Buffalo has signed one of those guys (Takeo Spikes) in the last 10 or 15 years. The 2nd biggest FA contract or highest profile guy that they have signed is Derrick Dockery. How many teams havn’t made a handful of bigger additions over the years than Dock was?

I see your point.
You shouldn’t count Turner, really. He was a backup in San Diego.

Yeah, I thought about leaving Turner off the list, but Atlanta gave him a huge contract. Although, if I’m counting that, I should probably consider Dockery to be a big signing for Buffalo too.

I like that Langston Walker is the example being used
but not Derrick Dockery. That guy was the bigger problem signing….

Players choose Chicago......
And it is also known for cold weather. I don’t think the weather factors in as much as the City Life.
7 games and counting!!!
Which players go to Chicago? Ogunleye and Muhammed like five years ago? a 40 year old Orlando Pace?
I think this is a bit of a throwaway poll in that players aren’t sitting around and contemplating what they will answer like they would if they were actually choosing a new team. Players get asked the question and say the first team that comes to mind. And when a player thinks bad weather, the first team to pop into his head isn’t going to be Chicago, it’ll be snowy Buffalo and cold Green Bay.

What about Denver, Chicago, New England, Pittsburgh among others then too?

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Because they didn’t ask players for a list of places they didn’t want to play. They asked for one team and Buffalo and Green Bay have way bigger reputations for bad weather than Boston does. Why else would players consider Green Bay to be the place they would least like to play?

thats right
of all those teams listed, not only is weather a factor, but Green Bay and Buffalo have the biggest reputations, fair or not, of being cold places where you are in the middle of nowhere. Denver, Boston, Chicago and Pittsburgh are all considered more “vibrant” cities than Buffalo and Green Bay.
