Draft Order: Week 11 (Bills pick 8th)

The NFL draft order is first determined by the Super Bowl contestants who pick 32 and 31.  The playoff teams are then slotted by record from 21-30 (which is a change from past years).  The other 20 teams are slotted by record.  The first tie breaker in the draft is strength of schedule followed by conference win-loss.

If the NFL draft were held today, the top half of the NFL draft would be as follows:

1. Browns (1-10, 55% opponent winning percentage)
2. Buccaneers (1-10, 56% opponent winning percentage)
3. Rams (1-10, 60% opponent winning percentage)

Star-divide

4. Lions (2-9, 47% opponent winning percentage)
5. Redskins (3-8, 41% opponent winning percentage)
6. Chiefs (3-8, 54% opponent winning percentage)
7. Raiders (3-8, 58% opponent winning percentage)
8. Bills (4-7, 45% opponent winning percentage)
9. Broncos from Bears (4-7, 52% opponent winning percentage, 2-6 in NFC) [Jay Cutler]
10. 49ers from Panthers (4-7, 52% opponent winning percentage, 4-4 in NFC) [Everette Brown]
11. Seahawks (4-7, 55% opponent winning percentage)
12. Jets (5-6, 51% opponent winning percentage)
13*. 49ers (5-6, 55% opponent winning percentage)
13*. Texans (5-6, 55% opponent winning percentage)
15. Titans (5-6, 57% opponent winning percentage)
16. Dolphins (5-6, 58% opponent winning percentage)

[Note: Broncos first round pick belongs to Seahawks.]

* - Order would be determined by a coin flip since they are not in the same conference according to the NFL Tie-Breaking Procedures

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I'd like to see that slot keep going up

As we win out for the rest of the season !!!!!!

if we win out

I think the AFC wildcards could both be 9-7 teams. So that would be interesting.

I dont think we will though, I’m guessing we finish 6-10, 5-11 and draft 7th or so. I think that could get us Russell Okung. Any linebackers expected to be top ten guys?

Any linebackers expected to be top ten guys?

The only one with a legit chance to go that high, as it stands now, is Alabama ILB Rolando McClain.

linebackers

McClain is a stud and would be a great addition to the team. His injured teammate (Hightower) is awesome as well. Hope we can get 1 or both of them.

Just want it to go up enough

So that we don’t reach on a QB. I’d like to see us get some situational pieces in first. DT, LB, LT, etc.

Why DT? It’s one of our strong positions! We don’t need a big nose tackle either since we’re running a 4-3.

by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 1, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Personally, I don’t place DT as a position in the next draft with as great an importance as some of our brethren. However, don’t be fooled. I’m as big a Williams fan as there is, but Stroud is getting older. Johnson is adequate and versatile, but McCargo has officially flunked out. We need some new blood to keep the rotation fresh.

Agreed with all of that, but it still remains that the only guy we need to replace at DT this draft is McCargo, our 4th DT!!!

Picking a DT before the 5th would be a horrible idea for us this year.

well the future is still now…….. aparently

Yeah, except that now we have a younger team, and the player needed to make a great team if we can get a coach that knows what to do with them.

a thought on top ten pick

Is it possible that drafting Russell Okung or Trent Williams in the top ten to play LT could be a bigger pick for this team than a franchise QB? I only ask because a LT could very well solidify the offensive line. We could put the rook at LT, bump Bell to RT, Wood to center and Levitre and Butler at G. Hang would be a great fill in should Wood not be ready and a fantastic 6th lineman. Maybe Bell could even be athletic enough in such a scenario to let us play all 6 on some formation with Bell at tight end?

that is the most likely scenario, and problaby the one with the least amount of risk.

After Locker and Clausen are taken, I hope there is a big run on any other position. This should put the Bills in a good position to take someone like Pike in round 2.

I unfortunately and reluctantly agree. My absolute ideal option is that we get Jake Locker, who I consider to be the best QB in the draft (obviously, a lot will argue that predicate belongs to Jimmy Clausen), but seeing that we’re likely to draft at the very earliest sixth (after three teams in the Browns, Rams and Redskins that are dying for QB-help with the exception of the Skins, who basically gave up on Jason Campbell after his rookie season), we’ll likely be looking at three different options:

1) Draft LT (Russell Okung being the ideal guy)

2) Draft NT (Terrence Mount Cody. Trust me, this guy is going to one popular commodity, when draftday arrives, because there are loads of teams (particularly 3-4 teams that is) that are on the lookout for the next Casey Hampton, Haloti Ngata or Vince Wilfork. Cody is the best run-stopper I’ve seen in the last three drafts and is just unstoppable on running downs, and if we’re going to switch to a 3-4, then we’ll need a NT more than anything. Cody fits the description perfectly)

3) Trade down (and acquire more picks)

by BillsfanfromDenmark on Dec 1, 2009 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If we swtich to a 3-4 which I hope we do...heres how I see it w/ having to draft a NT

Maybin—————————Poz—————————-Mitchell—————————-Schobel

          Stroud——————————-Cody—————————Williams

1. Maybin is to little to play a 4-3 DE. I love his speed and we should utilize it by having him rush standing up
2. We all know POZ can cover as good as my grandma but he is an excellent tackler and should be used as run support
3. Mitchell has the hands and speed to cover many TE’s
4. Schobel is there jsut because (I think) he has played in a 3-4 before
5. Stroud has already stated that he hates playing NT and is excellent against the run
6. If Cody is as good as Denmark says, than hes worth a shot
7. Williams is a great run stuffer and still YOUNG!

Are you saying?

That switching to a 3-4 scheme would diminish the importantace of drafting defense high on the list next year. exception DT?

Excuses are a sign of weakness!!!!!!

by VanScottM on Dec 1, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

1) We don’t have any way of knowing if any of these people excel at their respective responsibilities in a 3-4. We also wouldn’t have anyone experienced in a 3-4 (at least recently) except new people if we did this.

2) I’d probably swap Stroud and Williams. The LDE tends to be a more traditional 4-3 DT space-eater while the RDE tends to be faster and able to cover more ground.

3) Not only is Mitchell injured and uncertain to be game-ready, but I think his more natural position would be on the outside in a 3-4, given that he’s a better blitzer and probably our most competent LB at coverage. He would probably split time at ROLB.

4) Don’t underestimate the role our LDEs (Kelsay, Denney, and Ellis) might play as an ILB. They are light as DEs but regularly match up on OL, so they shouldn’t get pushed around. They’re considered run-stuffing DEs, which is a main job of ILBs, and they’d get a little extra time to read and react to plays.

I would prefer Demetrius "I don't know the snap count" Bell to sit.

Okung LT
Levitre LG
Hang C (for now)
Wood RG
Butler RT (played here in college)

7 games and counting!!!

I would rather see Wood at C and Hang pushed out to RG

I’d rather see that too. And you have to remember that Bell has only been playing football for like 4 years. Give him time, he’ll get it right. And if he doesn’t, then the Okung-Levitre-Hang/Wood-Wood/Hang-Butler line is always a good backup plan.

by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 2, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know it’s still early, but have there been any reports of Wood’s condition?

This is exactly what I’ve been saying since I started posting again. We should deffinatly go LT in the first round this year, especially if we can get our hands on Okung or Williams. Pike will most likely be available when we come around in the second. And i’ll even say that i wouldn’t be against drafting Tebow in the second if we can draft Okung in the first.

Where are you getting the opponent win percentage from? I haven’t found it in any standings list at this point in the season…

by Krenn on Dec 1, 2009 1:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I feel bad for the Ravens

They have played the hardest schedule so far if you follow that and somehow are above .500. Reminds me of Bills in past years.

My proudest moment as a bills fan was watching Don Beebe chase someone down in a blowout. Is that sad?

It’s because they get to play Cleveland twice and KC once. Plus they have Oakland and Detroit on the remaining schedule. So they’re only 3-5 against teams with over 3 wins.
