Bills send LT Demetrius Bell to IR

Update: BuffaloBills.com is now reporting that D-Bell has been placed on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season. OL Andre Ramsey was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. End Update

Three Buffalo Bills players will miss the team's Week 14 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, but of those sitting, left tackle Demetrius Bell is the only starter. This according to BuffaloBills.com.

Bell, who began the season as the starting left tackle, has missed all or part of the Bills' last four games as he deals with a knee injury that might prevent him from playing again this season. That streak now extends to five games. Also out for this contest are tight end Joe Klopfenstein (who re-joined the team this week) and receiver Justin Jenkins.

Jonathan Scott will again start at left tackle in place of Bell. Kirk Chambers, who is questionable this week but is expected to play, will start at right tackle. Andy Levitre, Ryan Denney, Chris Draft and Jairus Byrd are all questionable as well, but BuffaloBills.com reports that it's anticipated that all players listed as questionable will be in the lineup.

Shawn Nelson, John McCargo and Ashton Youboty are all probable. McCargo and Youboty have each missed action in the past few weeks, but will be available this week.

Meanwhile, Terrence McGee, who was active but did not start in the Bills' Week 13 loss to the Jets, practiced fully all week and will start in Kansas City.

Was Klopfy injured when they re-signed him?

If so…why did they sign him?

With Jenkins out, I wonder which young WR that the team doesn’t care to give snaps to will be active?? My guess would be Johnson, though it’d be nice if both he and Hardy were active and utilized. Enough with TO and Evans, we know what they can and can’t do.

It doesn't mean they should get every rep

especially at the expense of two young receivers that this franchise needs to learn more about….

Another big obstacle to their playing time is our offensive line; AKA: The Infirmary. We never get to use spread formations because that would be an act of human sacrifice with the QB’s.

Wouldn’t it be Johnson based on special teams abilities? I don’t think it’s a lock either of them are active, either.

This is CRAZY

This is the second Bills player to have been injured for a while that all the sudden is placed on injured reserve (the other being Ellison). I don’t care what you say, but these trainers/doctors do not know what they are doing. We could have replaced these players weeks ago if they knew the severity of the injury. This team needs a new training staff to complement the new coach next year. It is NOT a coincidence that your whole roster every year almost goes on IR.

by csc06258 on Dec 11, 2009 8:36 PM EST reply actions

Ever stop to think that they take how the player feels into account as well? D Bell practiced on Monday, meaning they waited to see how he felt. In the Wednesday press conference Fewell said he looked good Monday.

Follow some other teams, and you will find out that they also put players on IR. It’s crazy right?

by howedyhowe on Dec 11, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

A player doesn’t go from “looking good” on Monday to IR Friday without an additional injury. If he was “IR worthy” sometime ago, why not put him on IR, get the necessary surgery and start rehab. It appears weeks were wasted, both for his healing process as well as presenting the ability to replace the roster spot. Just another in a long list of S.N.A.F.U s at which these geniuses have become so adept.

by fansince60 on Dec 11, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Bell is currently recovering from arthoscopic surgery on one of his knees. He had the procedure a few weeks ago (maybe a month?), won’t need another and is already rehabbing.

by kaisertown on Dec 12, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

The Bills play their last game 22 days from now. The trainers thought (and have correctly thought) that Bell would be healthy right around the end of the season. When Bell went down, the news was that the injury was pretty bad, but given Bell’s youth and need for experience the team decided to wait it out and see if he couldn’t play a game or two to finish the season. They’ve decided that he can’t. So what if Buffalo could have signed another play to take his spot a few weeks ago. What is that player going to do for the Bills other than sit on the bench? A little more experience for Bell could have gone a long way and if anything, I wish Buffalo would have taken another week to make the decision. I thought the training staff and management played this injury situation correctly.

D'oh!

The hits just keep on coming. Yeah, it doesn’t matter in terms of this year but all of these young guys are missing live game reps. That delay in development will haunt the team next year.

On another note, who else is on the 1st Round LT bandwagon?

If Locker decides to stay in school, no way Clausen or Bradford make it to us. Suh will be long gone. That leaves best LT available, IMO.

Yup, it`s the best, and most realistic pic. And for the record, I would pass on Bradford ten times over. He simply doesn`t impress me in all, especially with his newly discored antsyness when he doesn`t have a fantastic line in front of him. Heck I might even pass on Claussen if Okung is still available. Tony Davis would also be a fantastic pick up at LT.

by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 12, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

I’m on the LT bandwagon…unless Mallet declares (it’d be best if he was regarded as a 2nd-round prospect).

No offense to Demetrius “the human”, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but can we call him Dumb Bell when he’s Demetrius “the false start machine”?

by jj24 on Dec 12, 2009 8:43 AM EST reply actions

His false start penalties decreased dramatically after the first three weeks of the season.

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. --Wayne Grezky" --Michael Scott

by Brian Galliford on Dec 12, 2009 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the math would show the opposite.

Week 1 – 4 penalties (2 illegal formations, 1 hold, 1 false start)
Week 2 – 1 penalty (H)
Week 3 – 1 penalty (FS)
Week 4 – DNP
Week 5 – 2 penalties (2 FS)
Week 6 – penalty free
Week 7 – 1 penalty (FS)
Week 8 – penalty free
Week 9 – bye
Week 10 – 1 penalty (FS) left game at half and did not return.

So that would be .66 false starts a game in the first 3 weeks. .8 false starts a game after. If you want to say total penalties then yes there has been a decline. I think the frustration comes from that 1st game where he was penalized way

too much while it being his first game and in the national spotlight. He basically sh*t himself on the opening drive.

by twoeightnine on Dec 12, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

What the heck are you two talking about? Sure he had less playing time (due to injury) but in the time that he has spent on the feild he has gotten much better. Its called playing expirience. And if you don’t believe me, ask Ron for his offensive line stats, they’ll show you that Bell was the player that showed the most improvement behind Wood.

Bell is a good YOUNG tackle. If you actually bother giving him time to develop you will see that.

by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 12, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

D. Bell isn't starting LT quality for us next year either...

If we don’t bring in better talent at LT or RT next year, it will be another waste of a year going forward. Meredith, Scott, and Bell all need another year or two before they should be inserted into the starting line-up.

We tried the experiment to put in the young guy on the edge to see what he can do. It may have worked inside with Levitre and Wood because they were top talent in the draft. Bell was a 7th round project that is still a project…

by dabillsr1 on Dec 12, 2009 9:45 AM EST reply actions

Everyone thinks that the draft is a scale of talent, in a way it is, but its more of a salary scale than anything.

The picture in the story pretty much sums up our offense and passing game this year

Once Butler went down… we were toast. Edwards, Fitzy have been getting decked all year long. No time to go downfield unless max protect… Run blocking has been really bad all year too.

Butler’s injury was the worst loss before we lost Wood.

If there is any chance either of these players can come back next year healthy and can perform at 100%, plus we have competent back-ups and a real starting LT, we might be okay on the OL next year.

My fear is that Woods injury might be career threatening or either he and Butler won’t be near ready to return to 100% by next year or in future years. Both those guys we can’t afford to lose.
