Conflicting Interests: Bills beat Pats, or draft position?

The New England Patriots are heading to Ralph Wilson Stadium this coming Sunday. This is a Pats team the Buffalo Bills haven't beaten since, well, a couple of New England cast-offs (Drew Bledsoe, Lawyer Milloy) were leading the charge. People have already been complaining about Buffalo hurting draft position by not losing (can you honestly call that a win?) in Kansas City.

Here are the teams currently ahead of Buffalo on draft day:

  • 1-win teams: Tampa Bay, St Louis
  • 2-win teams: Cleveland, Detroit
  • 3-win teams: Kansas City
  • 4-win teams: Oakland, Washington

Those are the likely top seven picks, in some order. Someone with more time on their hands can figure out whether Oakland or Washington would pick first but, really, who cares at this point? Here's where things get more interesting:

  • 5-win teams: Buffalo, Chicago, Carolina, Seattle, San Francisco

It's a good bet that Buffalo would be picking near the end of that list, just because, well, its Buffalo. Didn't Buffalo wind up picking after San Fran two years in a row? Assuming the worst--always a safe bet with the Bills--Buffalo would currently be picking 12th. Sure, you can look it up and figure out where the Bills really fall in that 5 team glut of suckiness but, again, what's the point? Besides, Buffalo may add a win before all is said and done. Here are the current teams just behind Buffalo in the draft, which is another way of saying they're ahead of Buffalo in the win column:

  • 6-win teams: Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Houston, Atlanta

Should Buffalo come by another non-loss before the end of the season the Bills could be picking as late as #16. Think about that for a second. The league is so lopsided this season that a 6 win team could wind up picking in the middle of the first round.

That brings us to the Patriots game. Winning that game could, in theory, drop Buffalo from around pick #8 to possibly all the way down to No. 16. That's a huge swing.

But it's the Patriots. Buffalo could put a stake in the heart of Bill Belichick's playoff dreams and remove Brady's best excuse for not changing loaded diapers in January.

I voted for a Buffalo win, by the way. If we were talking about the Falcons or Colts I’d probably vote the other way—not that I would be able to keep myself from rooting for Buffalo anyway—but it’s the Patriots. Maybe Brady, in a fit of pique, would hurl a few of the loaded diapers at Belicheat….

Agreed, putting a dagger into the heart of Patriots nation by possibly denying them a chance to make the playoffs

THAT is worth any drop in draft pick position to me. We NEED this win. And we need to make the Patriots fans weep for not being able to go to the playoffs.

As my mother once said, common sense isn't as common as it should be, I'm looking at you Fewell, common sense says to play UP on the line against the slant.

That’s a great point. The game would maybe mean a little less if the Pats were three games up on everybody else in the division, but beating the Pats would make things very interesting. I think it would be funny to see a crappy Jets team sneak into the playoffs over the Pats and then lose by 20 points to a wildcard team like Miami did last year.

Think about all the money we could save… Dropping from #8 to #16 is 10s of millions for the life of a contract. With our history of 1st round draft picks, I will take the money and possibly use the savings to get some quality depth guys in FA.

I am torn

I always want the Bills to win, but if they won against the Pats, I have 2 major fears. #1 I think it would definitely hurt or draft position as described above. #2 and most importantly, I DO NOT want to give anyone in the current regime anything to hang there hat on when it comes to this season. I want a new GM and director of pro scouting and director of college scouting. I am afraid that if we were to win against the Pats, Ralph may think things are looking up and keep everything status quo.

Nah

I suspect that Fewell will get a Rooney rule sham interview but not be a serious candidate for the position.

I think I figured it out right

If Buffalo loses out and Oakland wins 1 more (last week of season versus Cleveland), I think we would pick 7th

WIN!

In my opinion, you always have to root for your team to win. Like Jason said, if we do drop a few spots in the draft order, we would save some money and have more flexibility to sign some other players. Also, I think it would be good for the players on the team to beat New England. The could really help their confidence when they play them next year. How many players on the roster were around the last time the Bills beat NE. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Moorman, Schobel, Kelsay, and Reed.

I like the confidence angle. I should have thought to have put it in the post.

Yeah, I like that point too. It’s good for the young guys to see all their hard work pay off with some wins too. When you’re working towards winning the division and making the playoffs, it’s better motivation than working towards keeping your job while the team rebuilds. Confidence is a big deal.

This is why I voted for a win

A good scouting department (which we already have) along with a good GM (hopefully we will get) can put together a great draft regardless of where they pick.

Winning this game would go a long way to helping the confidence of the team.

a good place to start rebuilding this teams psyche

is by beating the Patriots. Sometimes I wonder if the season would have been different if week 1 hadnt ended like it did. Either way, in my opinion beating the Patriots does more for this team’s long term success than picking 8 spots higher in the draft.

It goes beyond draft position

If we go on a mini-streak or win a few games, it benefits us for multiple reasons. First, we get to see victories. Duh, why else do you root for a team other than to see them win?

Second, picking at the very top of the draft is risky, especially with how huge the contracts will be this year. It’s much better to pick from 5-10 and get a player of a similar caliber with much less money owed. Also, this draft is pretty deep and there are only a few projected in the top 5 who fit the Bills’ needs. Let’s face it, even if we lost all our games, we’re not getting Suh or Okung unless they screw up somehow between now and draft day. Good teams draft well regardless of position. And besides, it’s not like there’s another Manning brother or some other can’t-miss QB at the top of the draft.

Last, and probably most importantly, winning and being competitive, especially on defense, will make this a more attractive position for a new coach and GM. Right now, our primary target is Shanahan, who is an offensive coach. If he sees that we play relatively good defense and are opportunistic with turnovers, he’s more likely to want to coach here. In that case, he wouldn’t have to fix as much and would be more intrigued by only having to worry about an offensive overhaul. Playing hard and winning makes the job much more attractive than having the #5 pick over the #11 pick.

by Dr. Brackish Okun on Dec 14, 2009 1:37 AM EST reply actions

Winning should be the only goal...

Rooting for draft position rather than a victory is not only no fun, but is bound to get you even more frustrated and cynical in the long-run. I realize that we’re all impatient about the playoff drought. Even with a high draft position, though, it might be years before we see a deep playoff run, and decades before we see a Super Bowl (which is the ultimate goal). And even with a medium draft slot, we could still make a run (assuming we get a decent GM, etc.).

Rather than worrying so much about whether a win will move us down a slot or two, it makes more sense just to root for a win — every Sunday , no matter the cost to our draft position. Then, if the Bills lose, find solace in the silver lining of a better draft pick.

The order should always be: (1) root for a win; (2) take comfort in the better draft position.

Draft position

is determined by a coin flip and then rotated in subsequent rounds look at the 2009 draft with us and the 49ers we drafted 11th in the first rd we lost the coin flip and then 10th in the second rd … we have to win this game agianst the Pats its huge… we need to stay out of the top ten…. that is a blessing not a curse top ten picks are prohibitivley expensive and we need to spend money on free agents not draft picks (Logan Mankins IMO)… also i want Perry Fewell to get the job he IMO is very similar to MIke Tomlin he is cheap labor not 10 million a year like some coaches and he is young and fiery with a great knowledge of this team … he deserves the job

It is with me. We’ve done a terrible job with getting free agents in the past several years (know full well the Stroud and Florence exceptions). I’m all for building through the draft, but I’m also big on getting some legitimate vets in here to help rookies learn how to play their positions correctly. Sadly, this year probably won’t be flush with FA talent since the CBA won’t be extended.

Also, one thing I noticed: Adalius Thomas is on the outs with Belichick. If that goes badly and he gets cut, I’d take him. He can’t be TOO pricey after this down year (currently averaging $4-7M/year) and would want some serious revenge after the relationship soured. Just a pipe dream, but I like to dream at this point in the season.

I said quality free agents. That knocks Walker and Dock out immediately. Mitchell is ok but nothing special. TO was a fluke and nobody was beating down his door at the time. It’s not like that thought even came from the pro personnel department. I made the exception for Florence and Hang has not been particularly special, though certainly an upgrade from the feces-soaked sad-sacks that were there last year.

So I’m willing to concede about 4 of those 8 as being quality, but not elite, signings. In 7 years.

Yeah you’d figure it’s a better way to determine the worse team than flipping a coin. If the goal is to give the worst teams the best picks, head to head makes a ton of sense. Point differential or something like that could work too.

Yeah, it’s strength of schedule with the team who played the weaker opponents picking first. The coin flip is if two teams have an identical record and strength of schedule.

My take

I consider myself a die hard Bills fan – would say that all of us do as well. As such, we all have the same goal – win a championship.

Winning a championship is not easy – heck making the playoffs isn’t easy – actually, (ask DJ), winning a single game in the NFL isn’t easy. But obvioulsy winning a championship is the most difficult thing to do in football.

To me – that comes with sacrifices. In order to compete year in and year out with the elite teams you obviously must have the players. To me – getting the best players available should be the goal when a season is over.

Now, I would never want my team to quit on the season and I hope they would never – but as far as rooting for them to beat a NE team in a meaningless December game when that one loss could potentially grab us a game changing type player is something i’m not willing to do.

My goal is to win a championship – if that means sacrifices in the way of losing meaningless games in December then so be it.

I, personally, really don’t have any rivals so that means nothning to me. To me – our rival is who we play next – not some team like NE just because they are in our division. every week should be a rivalry against who we play.

I understand pride or what have you, but i’m not wired that way. I’m one of the few that are willing to take the shot to the nuts if thats what makes this team win a championship. To me – grabbing an QB at 6,7,8 that can will us to wins instead of taking a LB or LT at 16 is more important.

I want a ring – if that means losing out the string then so be it. You can talk about pride, about confidence, about never rooting against the Bills. But as a true die hard fan that wants a ring – if this is the crap filled mud hole that we have to walk through in order to get that ring – then i’m willing to do it.

Never put salt in your eyes

I have many thoughts on this subject. I thought about this yesterday and was hoping the topic came up so I can share my opinion.
Completely 100% you have to root for a win against the Patriots. And heres why:
1) Its the Pats and I hate them, they are my personal Super Bowl. Plus I’m still heated about them running up the score in 2007 on MNF.
2) A win over the Pats will show progress for the players, I can’t imagine how good Lee Evans is going to feel if he beats the Pats.
3) A higher draft pick doesnt mean a better player when you actually see how he plays in the NFL
4) Not one single player in the draft is going to make this team a contender. Especially not with a brand new regime in its first year.
5) Our top 3 needs are OL, DL, and QB. All 3 positions take more than one year in order to become major factors on the team.
       - This will come with debate but I think it is mostly agreed upon that unless your getting some serious talent at these positions, its going to take a year to develop.
6) Just based on percentages, how many teams go from 5-11 to the playoffs in the next year vs a better record going to the playoffs.
7) Whether you agree or not, the Bills have to rebuild there tradition and reputation, winning 5 games in a year does no help with progression.

by BillsfanDan on Dec 14, 2009 6:48 PM EST reply actions

I dont know if DL is the 2nd biggest need...

LB might be moreso than DL.

Likely on very expensive sheets. And likely not alone.

Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

Maybe he’ll join the Colts in the offseason and see how it feels to beat the Pats.

Bills Win

Anytime we can beat New England and ruin their playoff hopes, I am in favor of. No guarantee that we will draft anybody who will end up playing for us anyhow – Look at Maybin – doh!

As Buffalo Sports Daily reported today… there’s still a chance. We need to win out. THe Dolphins and Pats need to lose out. The Jets can only win one game. Just sayin’.

Take comfort in the fact that NE plays JAX. There’s no way they lose that game. None.

Because I am an unrepentant optimist when it comes to this team. :-)
Furthermore, we were assuming that Buffalo won out. NE would have to lose out for us to win the tiebreaker. There’s just no way NE loses out.

There is no chance

Even if the math might suggest otherwise….

Ron… It’s a bit late to comment, but it’s almost always better to play to win. Each player has to demonstrate their value to the Bills and other prospective teams. And the Bills could demonstrate their value to a prospective coach by showing some heart and character. It would be nice not to have to stomach a full rebuilding effort, and the core group of young talent could demonstrate that—with the right front office personnel and coaching—the Bills aren’t that far away from being a winning ball club. Not that it would be the deciding criteria…but it could help in the effort to bag a big name coach.

Bills lose in Buffalo just as easily as on the road

I'm in a good place right now...

because I’ll be happy whether they win or lose. It’s one step closer to finally getting this miserable season over with. If we win I’ll be happy because we’ve finally gotten that humongous Pats-monkey off our back. If we lose, we’re more likely to be picking in the top 10. I’m satisfied either way. I don’t want Fewell back as the HC. If he wins 2 out of the next 3, there’s an increased chance of things remaining largely intact as they’re currently constructed. That would be a bad thing as far as the ultimate solution to curbing our losing ways.

There’s no chance that Fewell is back next year in any capacity. Wilson wants change and Fewell represents the status quo. Oh, and his defenses have routinely been the worst in the league at stopping the run for the past several seasons.

I'm only gonna be happy.

If the Bills win.

I have a healthy hate for the Patriots.

They are the Dolphins of my generation.

I want to see the dagger stuck in Belicheats heart.

It’s been too long.

This draft isn’t that great anyway, I’ll give up a few spots in the draft to see Belicheat look like he did at the end of the Colts game.

Totally worth it to me :)

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.
