Todd McShay's First Round Mock Draft
Buffalo Bills
Record: 5-8
Anthony Davis*, OT, Rutgers
Davis comes with a bit of baggage, but there isn't an offensive lineman in the 2010 class with a better combination of size and agility.
He has us picking 10th based on SOS, which contradicts Matt's post. All of his tiebreakers show the team with the harder SOS picking first, so he's wrong on us picking 10th instead of 8th.
He has Jimmy Clausen 23rd to Seattle, Sam Bradford 7th to Washington and Davis as the 3rd OT off the board.

Walter Football has us 8th, too.
He even says it in the article correctly:
ties between teams with identical records are broken based on 2009 strength of schedule, with the team with the weaker strength of schedule getting the higher pick.
He could be using a SOS that includes everyone they will face, too. I don’t think mine does.

Davis is my personal favorite OT in the draft. Just gettin’ that out of the way now.

For the uninitiated, what is the “baggage” McShay is referring to?

Davis' Baggage
He’s the BMOC at Rutgers and he knows it and acts like it. He has all the tools to be an All Pro at the NFL level too, and he knows that as well.
It all adds up to over-cockiness and over-confidence, which effects his motivation to learn and get better.
Like Brian, he’s my favorite as well, and I think getting his a$$ kicked by Stroud, Schobel and Company in practice will knock him down a couple notches.
Ugh. I hate that kind of con when it comes to players. If it was occasional sloppy technique or something like that, I’d be ok. Motivation issues scare me though.

I don’t think it’s a motivation issue so much as a he-hasn’t-needed-to-be-superbly-motivated-yet issue. I think he’ll be fine. We’re not talking about Andre Smith here.

Agree
He’s not an Andre Smith. He’s a top 10 pick at Rutgers.
His first training camp should suffice to bring him back to Earth.

Being in the state of NJ probably inflates his sense of worth. Happens with most people from NJ. :)
No offense to anyone, of course!

that video of Smith at the combine with his man-boobs flopping around during the 40 yard dash still haunts me.
Jonathan Stupar won the Heisman…while playing in the NFL!
He should be motivated by the butt kicking handed to him by Syracuse....
SYRACUSE!!!!

The 'Cuse bringing the thunder baby! Hey, I take the joy where I can get it OK?
As my mother once said, common sense isn't as common as it should be, I'm looking at you Ralph, get the Front Office in order, THEN worry about who your HC is....
I like Davis, and he’s become my favorite LT pick too. But that cockiness does scare me a bit. I don’t want us to get a DeAngelo Hall type player (so arragant that he stopped trying to get better and actually got worst).

Difference
Hall played at VT, against Miami, FSU, etc. and was successful. Add in that he was a man-coverage corner, and it was easy to see why he acted the way he did.
Davis is just a big fish in a medium sized pond. Blocking Selvie and JPP is a long way from blocking NFL rushers. A good training camp against Stroud and Schobel wil get his head straight.
Don't you mean...
in the draft….assuming he declares?

Does he have any other QBs going in round 1?

Elite Talent - Untested
I’m an alum and a big supporter of the Rutgers program.
Davis is a natural LT and he’ll probably be a great one if he stays healthy. I very much doubt he would be a dramatic upgrade in year one, but I guess with a new regime they’re going to want to start there. Another one of those perfect bodies and skillset guys who just need reps.
But honestly, there isn’t much experience there against elite competition and Rutgers has struggled to run the ball at times this season. At times they have run dominantly though as well.
Expect growing pains. He is only a junior and Rutgers has played teams like Howard, FIU, Texas Southern this year, you can’t overlook that. And none of that is his fault, but it becomes a matter of trusting the scouting enough to make that kind of pick so early.
in a salary cap era, no single unit (offense or defense) should be consistently sub-average for such a long stretch.
