Q&A with Pats Pulpit, Round 2
Hi, it's me again. It seems only a short few weeks ago that my favorite team barely scraped by the Bills in an MNF season opener. If not for an early Leodis McKelvin Xmas present... sorry to bring that up.
Brady's still not back IMO, Moss is catching a lot of heat, and we've discovered just how young and inexperienced our secondary really is. Possibly vulnerable? Well, we dropped one to Miami; maybe you can take solace in that. Oh, and Indy and New Orleans and... Let's just say we don't do well on the road.
You have questions and I have answers or, at the very least, snarky comments. Fire away Rumblings faithful.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Buffalo’s porous run defense has been legendary this season. How is your run offense fairing this year?

To the surprise of many Pats fans...
…run offense is not too bad this year. Necessity is the mother of invention and our WR corps appear vulnerable/thin at the moment, so we’ve been turning to the ground more often. If teams shut down Randy Moss and Wes Welker, there’s only special teamer Sam Aiken and rookie Julian Edelman to step up. Luckily, Laurence Maroney has had a decent year. Would I put him in a list with some of the elite RB’s? No, not really. But he’s perfectly viable as the lead guy in New England’s “Backfield by Committee” approach.

Maroney’s been a gift to me as a flex back. I think he’s getting it figured out now.

Question?
Do u think their will be matchup problems on the outside with our WR’s and ur CB’s i have seen a few pats games this year i live in CT and they get beat deep by some of the better QB’s in the league but how have they done against bills caliber QB play?

Pats CB's
The young guys get burned a bit against experienced WR’s. For example, put T.O. opposite rookie Darius Butler and Darius will have a long day. But the real issue for us has been the inability to generate pressure. If we can get to Edwards and rattle him a bit, we’ll have a better chance in the DB/WR matchups.

Trading Brady
When do you think Brady gets traded away? 2, maybe 3 seasons down the road? Your team likes to stock pile draft picks (Seymour’s trade this past offseason comes to mind) Seems to me that once TB is gone that’s when the Bills will have a chance at beat the Pats again, once he’s gone.
Also, your coach hasn’t made all the right calls this season (going for it on 4th down and failing on more than one occasion costing him W’s). Granted he’s one of the better coaches of all time, but is he starting to get on the “coaches hotseat” yet?

Brady will retire a Patriot
I’m not sure the stockpiling strategy applies to Wonderboy. At least that’s this homer’s opinion.
I’ve been somewhat critical of Belichick’s 4th and whatevers, contrary to the opinion of many. Supposedly, statistics are on his side, but I just don’t think the risk is worth the reward in many cases (4th and 2 against Indy, Miami’s 4th down stop on the goal line instead of kicking an FG). But I don’t believe he’s on the hotseat. I do feel, however, these riskier calls are with the wrong crew; years back, he would’ve had more success.

As long as Bellichick has a pulse, I see no way he’s on the hotseat in NE. He helped bring relevancy to the organization.

The M&M Boys.
Marhoney and Morris with Morris handling the rock in the second half. This is my worry as well as Welker. Will Sammy Morris be healthy this weekend? He brings that Marshawn Lynch style with him with a little more speed.

No, he was very promising, though he suffered from the usual lack of run-blocking by what Belichick once called the Bills “horse-**** offensive-line.”

So far, he hasn’t shown up with any practice participation issues. Of course, that doesn’t mean much with Belichick.

Seymour trade?
It has been said in the media that the Pats season went downhill after the decision to trade away Seymour — that a lot of players began to question Belichick’s vision for the team after sending off such a critical part of the defense to Oakland. Any truth to that?
by Macktruck on Dec 17, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Seymour
I think it’s coincidence. Seymour was certainly a great player, but the general consensus was that he’d begun to lose a few steps and trading him away while he still had value was the right move. There are fewer issues on the DL than at OLB and DB, IMO. We struggling with an inexperienced defensive backfield.

So does the Bills pass defence worry you at all?
Giving the previously mentioned vulnerability of your WR corps?

Pass defense
If the Bills have someone who can take Moss out of the game, then I think the pass defense will have a shot. Welker has been having a monster season, so that’s where the true threat comes from.

We matched up well last time
They shadowed him with Corner and their goal was to tackle him behind the LOS where he tends to catch a lot of balls. In the cases of the quick screens, they jammed or muscled him to throw off the timing.
by Ono on Dec 18, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely, that can happen
Jam those screens and you can stop Welker.

First, you really shouldn’t thank McKelvin for the SNAFU in the first game. The blame rightly belongs to the receivers who dropped 3 certain first downs—take the two minutes or so off the clock for each of those drops and the Pats wouldn’t have had the time for a comeback. Anyway….
Brady hasn’t looked the same (not a surprise—it took Palmer a year to come back fully) but he also seems to have been under a lot more pressure this year. Are opposing teams throwing more blitzers at him or has the line just not been up to snuff?
The Pats have had some time to work on their 4-3 look since the last Bills game. Has that time been put to productive use or is the defense still trying to find its footing? Has Adelius Thomas just not transitioned to a 4-3 look or has he just declined significantly?
Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

I love that Adalius Thomas question. I’m now very curious about that myself.

Brady, the line, and the defense
I don’t think teams are throwing anything different at Brady than before. I feel the lack of real targets has done some damage. In 2007, Brady had Donte Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney as #3 and #4; we don’t really have a viable #3 and #4 right now.
Regarding the 4-3, it was mostly used when ILB Jerod Mayo was out (injured during our first matchup); it now serves equal time with some of our other defensive packages (3-4, nickel, dime).
Adalius Thomas has simply not performed to the expectations Belichick has had. With a decent salary you’d expect him to be that veteran presence our D really needs, but he hasn’t become the leader we’d hoped for.. He’s also been a healthy scratch for a few games. I think he’s gone at the end of this season, but his contract is up in 2011; that’ll be a wrinkle to deal with.

If not for an early Leodis McKelvin Xmas present… sorry to bring that up
Liar! You’re not sorry! But I wouldn’t be if I were in your shoes either. So, I do appreciate the attempt.
Do you think the season would be going any differently had the Bills pulled out that game? Would the loss have started this bit of un-Pat-like unraveling (which I think is being way overblown by a media that finally has something NE related to talk about other than how great Brady and Belichick are) a little earlier? Any chance it would have rallied them around Brady and his recovery and almost helped them?
And since I need to ask offseason related questions because that’s where my head is at:
What do you think your DBs will look like next year? Any chance Bodden comes back? Will Chung and Merriweather start at safety? Or do McGowan or Sanders have any sort of long term future there? Would you be comfortable with a secondary as young as Butler, Wilhite, Chung and Merriweather or do you need a Bodden or Springs type presence back there?
What are the odds that Matt Light is released? Are they better or worse than him being moved over to RT?
A pass rusher has to be your biggest need, right?

Correct, I’m not sorry. ;-) I was at the MNF and was watching a couple of Bills fans in front of us. Up until the last few minutes, they were cheering away. When Brady hit Watson for the first TD, it was, “Uh oh…”. When McKelvin fumbled, they were holding their heads in their hands.
I don’t think losing that game would’ve changed much. Brady was pretty rusty at the beginning of the season, so I don’t think a “rallying cry” after a loss would’ve made a heck of a lot of difference.
Regarding the defensive backfield, I think Springs is gone even if his contract is until 2011. Bodden, done in 2009, will be re-signed, IMO. The starting safeties will be Meriweather and Sanders; Meriweather has done well, but needs more reps while Sanders is an animal. McGowan and Chung have good futures, but a starting position will be tough with the depth we have at Safety.
I would love to see Matt Light moved to RT and Sebastian Vollmer take the LT spot. Vollmer has done pretty well and seems to have the right mix of body type and skills to succeed at that position.
Pass rushing is definitely our biggest issue. If we don’t go after a free agent, we better pick up a star in the draft.

At this point, the evil empire appears to start to crumble...
but, that being said. Do you think that the Patriots can continue to get good UFAs on a discount not that its not a given they are going to the superbowl. Or even the playoffs at this point.
Thoughts?

by SERGEANT MAJOR THOR on Dec 17, 2009 11:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That is a great question.
Part of the “discount” is to find players that are in the decline of their years, but still have productivity. The other part is finding players that are rated poorly elsewhere, but have talent within the system. Your question was pointed to the first part, but let me address the second part first.
With Pioli gone, does Belichick still have as much an eye for an undervalued player? The Galloway, Lewis, Burgess, (and the Raider’s backup QB – forget the name) would indicate that there are more swings and misses than in times past. With some of those guys burning draft picks (yeah, they grow on trees here), it isn’t good business. This is something that we will need to keep an eye on.
The other part is guys looking for a ring and a role. I think there is still a shot they will come to Foxboro. There are other teams in the league with as good or better shot at a ring, but do they put as much value in “used up” veterans as Hoodie does? That’s the big question. It depends on how many people are calling and what they’re asking you to do. Carry the load, or share it.
