John Fox as Head Coach
So I was reading an article by Peter King today, about coaching positions throughout the league. It is pretty widely known that Bill Cowher wants the Carolina job because he already lives in the area and his daughter can finish school there. What is intriguing about this is that for him to be the coach, John Fox would obviously not be there any longer. He's been to a super bowl with an average quarterback in Jake Delhomme. I believe his style of coaching would do well in Buffalo. And with it looking like Shanahan will probably end up in Washington, Gruden not coming back, and Holmgren not wanting to coach...This looks like a pretty good option to me. And if I were to guess, Delhomme probably won't be back in Carolina next year, and I believe he would come along with Fox and be our stopgap QB for a year. I know he has a lot of turnovers, but at least he goes downfield, he is definitely a leader, and would be a good mentor for a young QB. And if Fox were to hire a Charlie Weis or some other QB developer for an OC, I really feel like we would be in a great spot for the organization.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

That franchise is broke so bad that the Raiders laugh at them.

Please remind me...... What is our record vs Cleveland lately? Yeah, that could be the reason.

But who’s got the better overall record? In terms of broke-to-hell, Cleveland is worse off than we are and it’s not by a small margin.

Sure. But if we take the last ten years (after all how much can history more recent than that really matter?), it looks more like this:
CLE: (56-117, 1 playoff appearance)

We have a third more wins than they do in that time frame. That’s not insignificant. Don’t get me wrong, neither of us has had much success in the recent past. The fact is, though that we’ve consistently been in the lower part of the middle of the pack and they’ve consistently been at the bottom. They have 7 seasons with 5 or fewer wins. We have 3.

What makes 10 years the majic number? Maybe you should only look at the last 5 years?
HIstory is history and it all matters, or else the HOF should be torn down.

Glad you mentioned that.
CLE: (26-51, 0 playoff appearances)
BUF: (31-46, 0 playoff appearances)
Again, not much better, but we’re still better. The Browns’ record is largely helped by that miracle season with Anderson playing way above himself while we were dealing with QB injuries.
I disagree that “all history” matters. If you look at the Chiefs before this year, they were in a bad, bad place that they’re still trying to get out of. They had a good stretch in the 60’s and again in the 90’s, even a decent run with Vermeil. That will bring their overall average win record up. Everyone saw they were going in a bad direction though, and a major shift was needed. It’s the same for us. It’s the same for the Browns. It doesn’t matter what the total historical record of the teams is.
Maybe I threw you off when I said “overall record”. I didn’t exactly mean W-L record. It was more like track record of not completely imploding. They’ve had a lot of seasons with 4 or fewer wins. That’s just soul-crushing and it gets into your blood. We’ve actually remained relatively competitive in most of our seasons. Not against the Pats obviously. We’ve had a bad 2 year stretch. But it’s nothing like the Browns.

not that it matters.......
but you went back 11 years…….lol
Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work. - Peter Gibbons

does that include the original cleveland browns? you kno the team now known as the Baltimore ravens?
He doesn’t want to coach Cleveland. That’s the key word. He’s going to be their “football czar,” a la Parcells in Miami.

Delhomme? Are you kidding? I started taking the Panthers in the Author’s Picks specifically because Delhomme wasn’t playing—-and the Panthers won, mainly because they didn’t have to overcome 4-5 Delhomme INTs. He’s horrible.
Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner
Foxy is a realistic candidate for this team.
I think he is a solid coach, but he showed some uncanny loyalty to Delhomme when the guy threw too many picks game after game……after game………after………game.
He is the type of coach that fits the “Bills” profile. Retread coach who is in the second tier of potential candidates. I guess I’m 50/50 on him right now.
7 games and counting!!!
I like Fox
cuz he is conservative run first type offensive sheme that Bffalo could excel in we have two good backs so does carolina are oline could be much improved with a signing in the offseaon and a high draft pick we have lee evans who could be our deep threat just like steve smith, the only thing i dont like is his willingness to trade first rd draft picks year after year im not sure if he did that cuz he figured if he doesnt win now hell be gone anyway so why not but that makes me upset if ur gonna trade high draft picks u trade them for a player who is a proven commodity not to take another player in the draft who may or may not pan out IMO

Fox
I like the idea. With Shanahan, Gruden, Dungy, Holmgren, Schottenheimer, and Cowher not realistically interested in Buffalo, I started looking at head coaches who might get fired and Fox and Del Rio interest me. I STILL think Brian Billick makes a lot of sense for the Bills and I wish they’d target him, but if they ended up with Fox, I’d be fairly pleased.
One interesting note I saw on ESPN today was that when Shanahan spoke with Brandon last month, they talked about him coming on board with Bruce Allen as the GM. With Allen taking the Skins job, you can see where Shanahan will end up. But that being said, I think Buffalo will hire a GM before a head coach and that GM will pick the coach. Sounds logical enough, but OBD hasn’t been very logical since the crash of 2005. Baby steps for the BIlls.
I like Billick too.

He’s been mediocre at best in Houston. At least Fox, Billick, and Del Rio have all been to the playoffs and won there.

It may be what some people want. I don’t particularly care. How did Brian Billick and his awesome offensive mind do in fostering a great offense in Baltimore?

Well in all fairness
Shanahans problem in Houston hasn’t really been his offense has it? Therefore any comparisons to Billick are uhhhh not valid at all.
I get what you’re saying but that’s precisely my point. You said “Shanahan” not Kubiak. A great offensive coordinator doesn’t make a great offensive head coach. If he has the right people with him it can. Let me give a different example. Mike Tomlin was a very good DC in Minnesota. What did he do when he was hired as head coach in Pittsburgh? Install his own defense right with his own play calls and ideas? Nope. He let Dick LeBeau do his thing. I couldn’t care less about “offensive” vs. “defensive” minded head coaching candidates because if the Bills hire a good GM and that guy picks a good coach I don’t care if he was a special teams coach or an OL coach or anything like that. Being able to bring in great coordinators and other staff and motivate your team are the two most essential things to a head coach.

I thought of another one who hasn’t had a lot of time. Todd Haley. Scott Pioli brings in Matt Cassell and Haley and they procede to be just as bad on offense, defense, point differential, and everything else. It’s his first year, sure, but still.

Or heres another longshot
Lets say Wade Phillips wins a playoff game or two in Dallas. Would anybody else be intrested in Jason Garret?
No interest here.
If he can’t get that offense to play with any consistency, how will ever get a whole team to?
Fox I’d be interested in though, at least he’s proven he can do it.
Jake Delhomme?
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Re:
I thought about that one too. I don’t think that’s a horrible idea even though they’d probably get ripped initially. Garrett was once on the fast track to a high profile gig and his star has fallen recently due to a lot of things out of his control. He might make for an excellent buy low candidate.
Side note.
On ESPN radio today,
I heard Mort say,
If Fox get’s fired he could be a real shot to land in Buffalo with Charlie Weis as OC as they are good friends.

Billick NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
This guy had to have had one of the crappiest offenses during his tenure.
I wouldn’t want him even if he would do it for free.
His superbowl win is an abberation, due to the fact he had a great D.
At least Fox got that loser Delhomme to look OK sometimes.

I see Fox.
As the next Cowher.
Kinda like Fox made the super bowl with Jake Delhomme and lost.
Cowher made it with Neil O’Donnell and lost. Similar loser QB’s.
I’d be very happy with Fox so he can win hist first superbowl here in Buffalo if we could get him a decent QB.
