Is it Freddie's Time?
I am putting this post out there with the following caveats.... (1) I am a big Fred Jackson Fan, (2) I like the small college/underdog stories that work out well (Kutztown State anyone?), and (3) I just wanted to get some thoughts from everyone in the Rumble House on my idle mind wanderings.
The Bills, IMHO, have two quality running backs. While that may be a blessing in the NFL due to injuries and such, it also provides the ability to wonder if one of them may be used to bolster a Buffalo team desperately in need of more talent at key areas. This could be either through an additional high pick in the draft or by the trade acquisition of a solid veteran at one of the aforementioned key areas. For your consideration I propose exploring the option of trading Marshawn Lynch for either a high draft pick or a quality veteran. In all honesty, Lynch doesn't excite me. When I watch him run I don't feel the excitement that a Chris Johnson type run is forthcoming. That being said, I believe there are a few teams (KC or Washington for example) who he may very well excite because of his track record and potential.
Either through age (Portis), off field issues (Larry Johnson) or not living up to high expectations (Betts), I would think that a player such as Lynch might hold a fair amount of value. It certainly appears that KC, Buffalo, Washington and several others will be well positioned in the draft this April... I point to KC & Wash. because most of the others have decent to above average backs right now. What about Lynch for a solid linebacker who's contract is up or only has one year left? Maybe an Offensive lineman in the same situation? How about packaging Lynch & Parrish or Lynch and a 3rd or 4th to one of the high drafting teams in exchange for their 1st round pick?
Now I know that there are many factors at work in all of this (Buffalo being cheap, blockbuster player for player trades rarely happen etc.) but for a moment consider this...... Freddie as the clear number 1 and the opportunity to shore up a weakness in another area. I submit this post for your comments and opinions and also because most of you have a far greater knowledge of other teams' rosters, who is available in FA and who's contract in is the waning years...... have at it and thanks for your input.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

There is an example every week of why we need to have two quality backs. Keep him on the team.

In Buffalo there is?
Other than the first 3 weeks, when has there been a need for two quality RB’s here? I don’t disagree with the need for that, but I wouldn’t say we see it every week…

We see it this week with the Jets.
We saw it last week with the Dolphins.
We saw it firsthand the first three weeks.

Somebody had high expectations for Ladell Betts?
Whaaaa?
KC has Jamaal Charles, who if paired with a bigger back to take some of his carries is a much, much better option for KC than trading a semi-high pick for the much less explosive Lynch. That one won’t be happening.
Washington could happen because Portis might be through there and they love trading for or signing vets.
I said in the other Lynch post that I think San Diego is the best fit if a trade were to occur. LT is pretty much done and Sproles is on the franchise tag now. They need a feature back and would have the ability to trade picks since they have few holes.

I agree that San Diego could be a good fit. In another post when you listed all the potential teams, you pretty much ruled out Cleveland and I didn’t think anything of it, but I just remembered that they have a ton of picks this year. Maybe it’s still a longshot, but I thought I’d throw that out there.

Maybe
I just figured they’d draft their own guy and not waste any of those higher picks while they try to rebuild. They obviously need a RB though…

Yeah, it’s not likely, but I could see a new coach trying to make a move to win right away. Jamal Lewis is done there and they’ve got some great players on the OL going to waste. Maybe you couldn’t pry a high pick away, but you might be able to get a handful of mediocre ones which is something I would consider. Considering how bad the Browns are, I might take a fourth this year and a fourth next year (knowing they are practically 3rds) and a 5th or 6th this year and maybe even a 7th at some point on top of that.

Didn't we just talk about this??? this is getting real old.
Sure go ahead and trade lynch, cuz you know his stock is so high right now? Once you trade lynch, in two years when Freddie is considered over the hill in the NFL you are going to have to spend another draft pick on another running back. Lynch is only 23. I love Bills fans, a couple bad games and they want to run the player out of town. This guy rushed for 1,000 yards + in his first two seasons, showed that he is one of the toughest runners in the NFL and had bills fans going nuts, including me. Lynch is one of this teams only bright spots for the future in my opinion. I love Fred too, but he is 29 and that is considered old. He also took a lot of carries in the other leagues he played for so dont call him “fresh” for 29. If anything, we should try to trade Fred cuz he is older, but i’d rather keep both. Anyway, noone would trade us for a 29 year old back.
Decent RBs are probably the easiest position to pick up in the draft w/o expending a 1st or 2nd rd pick.

Not in Buffalo.
Outside of Fred anyone who has been of any use has been a 1st or 2nd round pick (even by other teams.) OJ, Joe Cribbs, Thurman, Kenneth Davis, Greg Bell, Antowain Smith, Willis McGahee, Travis Henry, Anthony Thomas, Marshawn. I guess you could say they found a 9th round “gem” in Robb Riddick.
Everything else has been a bust. Omon, Wright, Gates, Jarrett Ferguson, Sammy Morris (while a Bill), Shawn Bryson, Jonathan Linton, Leon Neal…
I'm not running anyone out of town......
Just questioning whether or not he would have more value to us in a trade than he currently does on the roster.

oooops
G Att Yds Yds/g Yds/att long Tds Fum Fum/lost
Fred Jackson 11 143 601 54.6 4.2 43 2 2 1
Marshawn Lynch 8 90 278 34.8 3.1 14 1 3 1
Bear in mind that 3 games missed at a generous avg of 40 yds/game still puts him behind Freddie by well over 200 yards. I’m not saying that Marshawn isn’t a quality back…. just that perhaps he would be worth more in trade value than we are getting out of him. Perhaps a young draft pick could fill his role at this level while giving us an opportunity to upgrade elsewhere.

thats one season, did you look at Lynch’s numbers the previous two years. Lynch hasn’t been getting the full load. and according to Jackson that helps your rythm,. I would like to see how lynch does with 20+ carries this year before. The guy is a complete animal. He did win us last game by getting us 9 yards on a screen to set up the 56 yard field goal.
If Lynch has struggled so much this season
why would any team give up much in trade for him?

Lets trade LYNCH!!!!!!!!
wow he had a horrible game tonight, 5 carries, 60 yards and a T.D, he has really regressed. Lynch is the better back, don’t let a couple games fool you people. he is 23 and one of the only good players on our team. Its funny how he doesnt get more touches.
