2010: Where to begin? Off Season, and draft

GM: Hire Eric DeCosta as GM. He’s currently the director of pro personnel in Baltimore and was director of college scouting before that. I don’t know how we could lure him out of a good situation in Baltimore, but the fact that he would be GM could be enough.

Head Coach: Keep Fewell. He brings new energy to the table and has shown he can lead even after our avalanche of injuries. People keep bringing up names like Billick, Shanahan, Fox, and Haslett. Let’s assume some team offers more money for Shanahan. Billick and Fox are attractive picks, but won’t be able to bring the kind of change and energy we need. Haslett hasn’t done anything for him to earn this job. Grimm and Frazier are also attractive picks, but Grimm is more-so the possibility, as he was one of the potential picks for the Steelers job 2 years ago. Frazier is a hot name, but I can’t see him as our coach. Fewell is the guy and he’s done a decent job keeping our team together.

Offensive Coordinator: Hire Mike Miller, the passing game coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals (we know how good they are). Keep Van Pelt as a QB coach, but Miller is our guy. He is a former Bills assistant including 2004, the last time we had a decent offense.

QB Coach: Frank Reich is the QB coach at Indianapolis, and convincing him to return to Buffalo is an option. If Zorn is fired, we should make a run for him to be a QB coach or a passing game coach.

Defensive Coordinator: Hire Rod Marinelli; despite being infamous for 0-16, he has experience with Cover 2 and has been a D-line coach, most notably at Tampa. If Fewell remains coach, he wouldn’t switch out of the base 4-3 and cover 2, a system which Marinelli knows.

Option 2 is to promote George Catavolos, our DB coach to defensive coordinator

My alternate plan was to keep Fewell as D coordinator and hire Leslie Frazier as Head coach.

Our draft, based on us not trading for draft picks.

Draft:

1st round: Best OT available (Okung, Trent Williams, Campbell, or Bulaga)  If, for some reason these tackles aren’t available, draft Rolando McClain.

2nd Round: Roddrick Muckelroy, OLB, Texas: Our run defense’s problems is controlling gaps and ineffectiveness of our linebackers to shed blocks. We need to draft an outside linebacker or MLB (move pos to outside). Muckelroy has a very good scouting report, and a big game against Alabama could elevate his status.

3rd round: Naaman Roosevelt, WR, U of Buffalo, or best WR. Roosevelt has set numerous records for Buffalo. He’s a local product (buffalo native). He had a fine record setting season this year in Buffalo and has shown ability on special teams (bye bye Parrish)

4th round: Sean Canfield, QB, Oregon State: QB with good size and decent arm. A strong bowl game and strong senior bowl could elevate his draft status. If his stock rises, maybe even draft him in the 3rd round.

5th round: OT.

6th round: DB.

6th round: OG.

7th round: WR.

Here’s how I estimate the draft to unfold; based on today’s standings, for all intents and purposes, I only did the ones who are drafting ahead of us.

1. St. Louis: Jim Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

2. Detroit: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

3. Tampa Bay: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

4. Cleveland: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

5. Kansas City: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

6. Washington: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

7. Buffalo: Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland

QB: Sign veteran QB like Kyle Boller or Jason Campbell. Keep Brohm as a backup, see what this guy can do. Draft Canfield in 3rd or 4th round. Develop either of those young QBs but lean towards Canfield.

I believe Canfield is our guy. Contrary to belief, if we can get a serviceable O-line, we can produce a decent QB. We need a franchise LT, one we haven’t had since Peters. There’s a dropoff after Clausen/Bradford, and I would rather not take a risk in Tebow, Mallet. There’s a risk with spread offense QBs, so that eliminates Pike and McCoy, and Crompton and Snead have very poor accuracy. That leaves Sean Canfield, who has good size at 6-4, 215. He makes great plays (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7KXaPjfipM&feature=related at 1:37) and accurate (same video 3:39). He played in a pro style offense and is under the radar in many draft boards. In the 4 ranked games he’s played, he’s totaled 1200 yards passing, 8TDs 2 Int, and maintaining a ~66-68% completions.  He is and should be the guy we aim for.

RB: Fred Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, and Free Agent RB.

WR: Evans, Hardy, Steve Johnson, a drafted WR (Roosevelt), and a free agent WR (Vincent Jackson, Breaston, Chambers). Add another free agent WR for depth.

TE: Keep Schouman, Fine, and Nelson.

OL:  Campbell, Levitre, Wood, Butler, and Free Agent RT or (Bell/Scott/Meredith)

DL: LE Maybin, DT Stroud, DT Williams, RE, Schobel

LB: WOLB is drafted LB (Muckelroy), ILB (move for Derrick Johnson or Kirk Morrison), and Pos moves to SOLB.

DB: LCB is McGee, FS is Byrd, SS Whitner/Scott, RCB is McKelvin.

Keep Florence, Corner. Draft another DB and find another veteran DB via free agency.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I like and agree with a lot of what you say here

One thing though, when we bring in a new GM and his front office choices, they sure aren’t going to keep many, if any, of this current regime’s coaching staff around. They’ll hire their guy and let him fill out the staff. There needs to be a house cleaning. Catavolous won’t be the DC, and I’m not sure how he’d be qualified anyhow. Van Pelt will be gone. But those are minor details and you were just making some suggestions anyhow…

I like adding an OT or McClain in the 1st. I’d prefer a QB if the opportunity and right guy were there. I’m not sure Campbell is the guy I’d want, yet, so I’ll just agree with you here. Ha.

No way to a slow, possession WR from UB in the 3rd. I’d look at Roosevelt towards the end of the draft, but this team doesn’t need a player like that. I don’t think he has much upside. They need a playmaker when they add a new WR. I’m not sure where they’re finding one though….

I like the Canfield pick. He’s on the rise and had a great season. If we’re adding a middle round QB, he might be my choice too. I’m interested in seeing how he performs at the Senior Bowls and workouts.

Kyle Boller, no freakin’ way!!!! I’d almost rather keep Fitzy in the starting lineup than even bother with a bum like that.

Vincent Jackson isn’t a legit option. He won’t be leaving SD, mostly because he’ll be a RFA anyhow with the CBA issues. There’s zero chance SD lets him go anywhere, and even if somehow they did, some other franchise would offer him the moon and the stars that the Bills can’t.

I believe Breaston will definitely be a RFA too, with or without a new CBA. He’s only got 3 seasons under his belt.

I'm really surprised Kurupt, you agree on most parts besides Boller.

No offense Jerseybuckeye,

I just can’t take anyone seriously who would want Kyle Boller.

I think you have a recipe for dropping us to the Cellar with St. Louis, Detroit, and Cleveland.

Not sold on Decosta, I’m not sure how much his drafting will help the O.

I’m starting to come around to Gettleman, but not convinced yet. Also Ferguson is still on my radar, he picked some good OL his first 2 times around as GM and picked some good parts that were still playing with Arizona last year, but not sure if I could trust Ferguson on getting us a decent coaching staff, as he inherited Holmgren at Seattle or a QB.

If St Louis drafts Clausen #1, they deserve a decade of futility if they don’t take Suh.

Washington is looking at Colt McCoy, Snyder even scouted him, Shanahan’s new Jake Plummer since he can’t get Locker which was his first choice. They are looking to trade up from the 2nd round to get Colt.

I agree with you on 1st round pick, if we can get a good LT prospect where we pick, let’s do it.

Fewell as HC, NO THANKS!

Why would Reich leave Indy except for more money? Would he make a real difference if we paid him more?

I wouldn’t be against Grimm if we’re going first time HC. If he could at least get the OL to look halfway decent, and bring Miller with him, he might have a chance.

Rod Marinelli? No thanks. It’s time to blow up the Tampa 2, Unless we can find a DT that can do what Sapp did and a LB who could do what Derick Brooks did back then.

I want some Wide Bodies, as Madden would say, at DT, if we are gonna keep the 4-3. Think Gilbert Brown, Pat Williams. I don’t care if DTs can chase down the running play, that’s why you have LBs, I wan’t wide bodies who can clog the middle and overpower smaller offensive zone block lineman in pass situations at DT. Sure has worked for Minnesota.

I’m also into keeping Incognito, I like that we sucked him away from Parcells, Parcells wanted him for a reason, he likes lineman who have a nasty streak. If Wood has a nasty streak, Incognito has a pure evil streak, I like that, as long as he can restrain himself from the dumber penalties, mainly ones after the whistle, like the illegal block in the back against Seau last sunday, the play was over, he didn’t need to that, it didn’t make a difference, but the forearm in the throat stuff on run blocking when you are opening holes, i’m all good with that.

There's not a wide receiver who is fast enough, that J.P. Losman can't overthrow him on a fly pattern.

by The Buffalo Kid on Dec 22, 2009 3:05 AM EST up reply actions

I’m in agreement with your wide bodies theory.

Remember when our defense was second in the league? well we ran a 4-3 then, and who were our two DTs. The fat guys. Pat williams, ted washington, sam adams. With 2 guys taking up 4 O-lineman, it makes sacks easier, and LBs can roam free.

I agree with a lot of it

maybe the bigger ideas, like drafting an OT, not the specific players involved, per se.

Cause he didn’t draft Ray Rice, Joe Flacco, and Michael Oher?

re: decosta

Seattle is looking at DeCosta. We definitely want this guy, he can draft offensive talent.

by jerseybuckeye on Dec 23, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Baltimore has been great at drafting offensive lineman for awhile. Adam Terry wasn’t a great pick, but they’ve also drafted Ben Grubbs, Chris Chester, Marshall Yanda, Jason Brown and they used a supplemental pick on Jared Gaither.

It’s not that the Ravens have done a poor job drafting offense, it’s that they’ve had cap problems and have spent the majority of their picks trying to keep the defense great while some of their better players walk in FA.

Still.

You don’t know how much of those decisions were Decosta’s and how much were Ozzie.

Unless you work for the Ravens FO.

Do you MRW?

You can only really judge FO picks without an interview, unless you are dealing with a person who had the final say on the choice in their previous stops.

Should say

I should reread these for typos before posting, but you still probably would have got the gist.

Of course we can’t know. The key is that he’s worked with guys who do it the way I want to do it. Does that mean he will be a carbon copy? Nah. It just means that he knows what a good player looks like. I would rather hire a guy from a productive front office that built a team through the draft like the Ravens than say the Saints GM who brought in Drew Brees and got lucky his shoulder wasn’t shot or something. That’s overgeneralizing (grossly in the case of the Saints) but you might get my point.

by MattRichWarren on Dec 26, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Well there are others.

Who drafted much more than three players that are quality.

I like the Oher pick, I really wanted him where we took Maybin, definately my choice.

But how much of that pick was Decosta and how much of that pick was Ozzie?

I don’t know, I doubt you do either.

I like Jeff Ferguson so far, at least he was a GM and picked a bunch of good players at Arizona and Seattle, we at least have a record of what he picked making the final decision.

But at this point I am open to DeCosta, Getteleman and Telesco.

Also open to Floyd Reese, John Clayton reported on Wgr550 yesterday, he would come here if offered a job.

Chris Brown on the Bills website reported Telesco would probably come here as Ralph and Polian have a better relationship now than in the past, so imagine that would extend to Ferguson since the both work under Polian.

DeCosta may be good.

High Risk, High Reward.

I would love to know things about all these candidates, that I don’t have access to.

Mainly what is there plan for fixing the offense?

Who do would their first choice be to coach.

What personnel people and scouts could they bring with them and their track records?

There is so many questions.

I just hope the Bills make the right choice by asking the right questions rather than latch on to the rising star when there might be someone else with some experience who can get it right because they can bring more quality employees with them from being around the league longer.

re; roosevelt

Maybe not a slow one, and maybe not roosevelt, but we need a possession guy in the mold of Eric Moulds. We have a speedy deep threat in Evans. Before we conjure delusions of a great offense, we need to draft a franchise OT.

by jerseybuckeye on Dec 23, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

I like the draft but would only have a few minor changes...

It would be nice to go Tackles in the first two rounds

1) OT- Okung / Bulaga (possibly McClain if he is available, prompting a T pick in the 2nd)
2) DT (even though the LBs/DEs are the primary reason our run d sucks, Stroud is getting old – same thing goes for our DEs)
3) WR – Eric Decker (my obligatory plug thus fulfilled)
4) QB
5) LB
6) OG
6) WR – (look for a speedy receiver – e.g. Johnny Knox)
7) LB

re: st. louis pick

Assuming Keith Null finishes strong, then St. Louis will definitely draft Suh.

I suggested we get a veteran like Kyle Boller, I didn’t say get him. Yes, I wouldn’t mind keeping Fitz.

I agree, if we can get Grimm and Miller, it would be great.

Tampa 2 will work if we can actually get linebackers. We have a decent D-line, but we were “successful” in the middle of this decade because we had linebackers…spikes, fletcher.

Yeah, I don’t think Keith Null is going to prevent them from drafting a QB #1 if they like one. Null is terrible.

Yeah, he’s a sixth round rookie out of middle of nowhere Texas farming school. How can anybody assume he will end the season in any way that doesn’t involve him playing poorly.

Doesn’t meant they can’t pass on a QB, but I doubt they do because of Keith Null.

I didn't get far in this post

I had to stop at keeping Van Pelt as QB coach… that is part of the problem here. We can’t develop a QB for one, and keeping this guys around is a big part of the problem. CLEAN HOUSE

It's not all that bad.... Go Bills 2010 !!!!

I’m a big fan of Eric DeCosta and I would love to see him as our new GM, as I think he would be the much-needed guy from the outside to revamp this entire organisation. A lot of people point to the fact that he’s only 38 or 39, but trust me, this guy is a keeper. He knows talent, when he sees it, and also has experience within player personnel, which is a big plus. In other words, he brings the ‘versatility’ to the GM-position that we need that another guy, whom I like, Dave Gettleman, doesn’t bring much of (though he could of course bring Marc Ross with him back to Buffalo, but who knows).

re: canfield

I haven’t been watching the entire Las Vegas bowl, but from what I see, I saw 2 straight dropped balls, and when I checked Canfield’s overall stats, its terrible. I hope he has a good senior bowl and combine.

by jerseybuckeye on Dec 22, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions

I agree

I like your Draft thoughts. However, I do not know if we need another receiver and I am not sure about your Q.B idea. Boller is pretty bad, kinda reminds me of Losman. I really think Vick might be the answer short term if Phily lets him go. He will give us the best chance to win as of next year. But if were talking more down the road you might be right. I have never heard of Canfield tho, ill have to keep an eye on him. I really do not like this draft class for Q.B’s.

Blow tgis whole team up

Every player should be held accountable for this injury prone loser mentality that the people in western NY have had to put up with. I would not shed one tear if all these idiots never played football again. Kawiki and Eric Woods take your mangled a@! selves and see what it is like really go to work. If you Can’t take a hit donot waste our time. Please lets get over this Bobby April thing too he only looks good in a room full of fat chicks and I would still take the fat chick
