AP: Bills DE Schobel considering retirement
John Wawrow of the Associated Press is reporting that Buffalo Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel is considering retirement. The report quotes Schobel as follows:
"I don't know my future really, what I'm going to do," Schobel told two reporters, including The Associated Press, following practice Wednesday.
Wawrow also notes that Schobel fears he has "slowed down" in his ninth season out of TCU. He'll be 33 at the start of the 2010 season, and at that point will be in the fourth year of a 7-year, $50 million deal he signed in August of 2007.
Schobel has 7 sacks this season after missing the majority of the 2008 season with a Lisfranc foot injury. His 75 career sacks are second in Bills team history, behind Hall of Fame end Bruce Smith.

Very nice brian. I just saw it in my news feed at work and you got it up before i even logged into rumblings.
IMO, this would be a pretty big loss for the defense and might make drafting another DE a mid-round priority

I thought they should have prepared for this last year, but looking back at the draft, I don’t fault their logic.

They did try to prepare for this last year. What do you think Maybin is?

I agree that maybin is better suited for a 3-4 OLB (coincidently a scheme that I’m hoping we switch back to this summer), but the drafted him to be an RE long term for this team. AKA, Schobel’s replacement.

I know......and he could still work out as a DE, but this is the same FO that
thought Walker could play LT. We will know soon enough…..errrrrr next season.

I’m thinking it was the coaching staff that thought that of Walker as an LT. You know, DJ and all.
But Maybin still has a potential at both DE and OLB.

You mean Monday night when he only made one tackle
that came in 3rd quarter after the game was out of reach and his team got dominated?
It’s really, really, simple. Orakpo is having a much, much better year than Maybin and that is a fact. What is not a fact is that he would be having the same season here in Buffalo, that he’d even be on the field here in Buffalo or that Maybin will never get it and is a complete bust already. The only other fact is that HE IS NOT A BUFFALO BILL AND ALL THE WHINING ABOUT IT IS NEVER GOING TO CHANGE THAT. There are no do-overs in the NFL. (Unless you’re punting in Dallas.) Can we please just drop it once and for all?

How do you fit him in on the roster though? I don’t think it was very realistic that they could have cut Kelsay or Denney or given up on Ellis to fit a different 5th DE on the roster. They had a lot of other holes that went unfilled as well.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

I think that taking two DE’s in last year’s draft would have been a mistake though. Just like taking 3 CB’s was (even though one is now a FS). We have too many spots to fill to concentrate on a single positions.

Nail on head
He’s been a guy that isn’t about stretching out his career either. No other team will pick up his contract, and this team is ready for yet another overhaul during his time here.

Release him and let him go to a contender to end his career, he’s earned that.
He’s 33, played his tail off, made pro bowls, and has never been in a playoff game. Sure he makes millions, but Schobel never came off as the guy who did it for the money.

defintely see where hes coming from… kind of sucks that the wind is out of his sails regarding this team. He was always ‘that vet that never gave up’ type of player in my eyes and the decade of horrible football is starting to turn him into something else. Hopefully its just the frustration talking but I would like to see him get a shot with a contender. That would be a nice thing to do for him. Maybe draft day trade?? Not sure what hes worth tho with his contract and age.

IF the Bills went 3-4. I still don’t see it happening. I read somewhere about too much competition with other teams when drafting talent to fit the scheme. 13 teams employ it. Though that seems low when looking at 32 teams. I don’t understand the argument if it’s 13 out of 32 teams. That’s less than half.

makes sense
that’s the crown jewel that makes the defense work. It’s much easier to find guys who can rush the passer or play ILB in the 3-4 than in the 4-3. The fact that the guys who can anchor the 3-4 are 1 in a gazillion are the reason it’s not the dominant scheme. IMO.

I would just hate to see Schobel retire after this season, but hopefully an off-season to rethink things and his life will lead him back to Buffalo to be the very strong-playing DE we’ve known for almost a decade.
If we move to a 3-4, I think the first thing we should do, would be to trade Schobel to a contende for a third and a fifth rounder and then use those picks as ammo to draft a QB or NT (or OLB again??).
No matter what happens, it’s safe to say Schobel has been a lone shine spot on this otherwise highly inconsistent and at times butt-awful Buffalo Bills team of the 2000’s.

The comments I got were mostly that I was crazy and had no clue what I was talking about. Really??? My post was that my mother runs the daycare where his children attend. His wife came in last week and said good bye to all the teachers. She was teared up and said they are heading home for the holiday and will not be back next August becuase he was retiring. Amazing what you can hear at a daycare. Kelsay’s child is there as well. Thought it was funny that his wife said… they just finished building a house in Nebraska and that “they have their fingers crossed” they will be back next year!

I signed up just so I could post that and it got booted! I figured if it was from his wife there had to be something behind it. Matt was asking if I thought that meant that they just weren’t coming back to Buffalo with him during the football season. I told him no, that his wife seemed sure he was retiring.
Kelsay’s wife was saying she hoped they would be back in Buffalo in August. She was impling that she wasn’t sure that he would be back with the team with all that will go on this offseason.
This daycare things has been pretty funny – Lofton, R. Brown, Gale Gilbert!!!, Denny, Schobel, Kelsay, Perry Fewell, and many more have or had their children there at some point. It has allowed me to create a pretty solid “Man Room” with crap/collectibles they have given my mother over the years.

I hope he opens up a bit about what he’s held back saying. It would be quite something to read what it’s really been like behind the scenes the last 10 years.

I would hope he would do that, but that doesnt seem like the kind of guy he is. Maybe after he’s hung them up for good he would. But it would be nice to find out exactly what REALLY happened during this decade.

At training camp, some arrogant little bastard mouthed off to him. He wanted his ball signed (kid was like 16, at most) and said come on dude, we pay your salary. Schobel turned around (was sitting on a Gator) and said “Who said that—say it again?” I couldn’t believe the kid said that, especially because he probably hasn’t paid for a single Bills item yet in his life.
Point is…Schobel looked ready to kill. I would have loved for him to take the kid’s ball and crush it…after signing it.

Trade Bait
Yeah, Schobel would only bring, say, a third or fourth rounder and would have to agree to re-work his contract. An NFC team on the rise in need of a dependable DE wouldn’t necessarily be able to do much better in what promises to be a thin free agent market.

Trade for Tyler Thigpen from the dolphins.
The dolphins grabbed him in a hurry when Pennington went down. Yes it would be with the dolphins, hell we let Thurman go to the dolphins at the end of his career. I would hate to see Aaron go, and once the new FO gets settled in they may intice him to stay. BUT when the wife starts talking things seem pretty straight forward.
The dolphins gave up a high pick for Thigpen and never used him, maybe they would want that pick back in a solid DE.

Aaron Schobel is my favorite BILL
but im ok with him retiring we are in full bore rebuild mode we have to find out what we have in Maybin next year and give him time to develop he is a project and always was but he is still athletically gifted and very quick around the corner and with an inside move he could become effective but Schobel retiring frees up some money for other things maybe even a FA

Is this just a way of Schobel screaming “I want to play for a team that has a chance next year?”

If this is the case, he may want to confide in Jason Taylor.

why wouldnt Schobel hang em up?
He spends the greater part of his career putting up league leading sack totals and giving 110% on every play but never being surrounded by the talent to get into the playoffs. Later on, coming off a serious injury he had a down year and the fanbase and media questioned whether his production was the result of his skill and some were even calling for his head after a decade of hard work and production. He bounces back two years removed from the injury and plays very good football but the team is a mess, the coach gets fired mid season, and fans are putting up billboards and trashing players yards.
All I know is this: As a fan, I and I’m sure many of you, love Schobel as a player. The only time in his career he was ever unproductive was a two year span after injury. For the record Osi Umenyiora has had a very mediocre year, one in which he is a year removed from injury. Serious injuries often take two seasons to come back from. Outside of that, Schobel has been one of the top DEs of his generation. In fact, I should stop using the past tense and say Schobel IS one of the best DEs of his generation. I hope you don’t retire Schobel, along with Terrence McGee you have been the only two players this entire decade who have been here all along and we can point to every single Sunday and say “that guy there, I know I can count him” in a decade full of guys we couldn’t count on. Hard worker, producer, high character, classy act, has spent his entire career with our beloved franchise. How much more could you ask of a player. Not much in my book. Come back Schobel, you aren’t done yet.

need this posted more often. Alot of spoiled brats around here, momma’s boys. We don’t win every game than we are average, or want to trade somebody for more draft picks. If any of our players wanted to leave I wouldn’t blame them based on the comments in some of these posts along with the actions of the fan base.

i always liked him
not his fault he wasn’t the true, dominant pass rusher to replace Bruce Smith. He’s definitely a guy who got every ounce of production out of his talent.

Love your comments Poz. You are completely correct. This guy is the true heart and soul, blue collar, lunch pail DE and IMO the best Bills player of the last decade. Something to be said for quiet hard work ethic that produced sacks and pressures for years. One injury year and people hung him out to dry. He comes back this year like a champ and even gets a pick six against the Pats in game one. This guy is a class act and always will be. Hope you don’t leave Aaron but if you do all the best wherever you land.

I don't blame him
After spending his entire career playing for a losing franchise, he sees another “rebuilding” couple of seasons ahead of him and the team. Why would he want to be apart of that, again? It’s hard to blame him for thinking about retiring when playing in a playoff game seems hopeless.
I think he wants to play for a winner and knows there’s no chance it’s happening in Buffalo for a few seasons, at the least. By then, his career is likely done anyways. I’m guessing he questions his ability to play at a consistent high level, but also wants out in order to get the chance at playing with a winner. For his sake, I hope he gets that chance.
If his thoughts about retirement are due solely to his performance and how his body feels instead of trying to get out of his contract in order to play for a winner, then I give the dude a ton of credit. There’s nothing sadder than watching a former very good NFL player holding on for way too long as his ability has slipped. Schobel isn’t one of those guys that will go out there if there’s a chance he embarrasses himself. I give him credit for realizing his time may be up and being proactive about his future.
If he does retire, getting that contract off the books is a nice start in this franchise’s rebuilding….

His contract, while inflated and kind of a thank you gift, doesn’t prevent the Bills from rebuilding, though.
