I agree

he really isn’t getting any respect because of a couple of reasons; his siblings failure to become NFL QB’s and his college and their inability to produce NFL QB’s as of late. Whether these are fair or not perception rules.
Given his production and his completion percentage, I think he stands a good chance to succeed in the NFL.
Todd McShay is the most clueless predictor of NFL talent out there and the fact that ESPN pays him his even more of a joke.

Todd McShay had Miami (FL) RB Javarris James as his top overall draft prospect entering the season, if I recall correctly.

McShay had Locker #1 while the draft counsel or whatever it’s called had him as 2nd rounder at best which is why he’s staying another year.

Todd McShay also thinks Aaron Maybin can still be a dominant player in this league. I laugh.

the fact that ESPN pays anyone is a joke.

Still not a huge fan, but if Bradford was gone, I wouldn't be oppose to taking him.

I'd rather have Bradford than Clausen too.

I pretty well watched every single ND game this year

And I really, really like this guy. He’s ready for the NFL and I’d love to have him in a Bills uniform. The fact that he is not getting the respect that he deserves is fine by me, he might actually slip far enough for us to have a chance – but I doubt it.

Nothing left to say...

I’m not sure I like using just everyone’s junior year as the comparison^, but I think it’s useful to see that his numbers look pretty good. It’s especially impressive that his interceptions are so low; it’s not like he had a big cupcake schedule. He probably gets picked apart more than most because every game of his is available pretty much nationwide, and because it’s a polarizing school.

I’m probably wrong for thinking this, but I’d be perfectly happy with any of Clausen, Bradford or McCoy as a potential long term QB solution.

^ A QB drafted when he comes out after his junior year will develop, I would think, differently than a QB that stays for his senior year. I’d rather see the final year of college for each QB, or their entire college careers.

Accurate QB who can run the West Coast Offense yr 1

What’s not to like? If the Bills pass on him, they’re hopeless. PERIOD.

in a salary cap era, no single unit (offense or defense) should be consistently sub-average for such a long stretch.

I don’t know if I’d go that far.

what’s his arm strength like? accuracy is awesome, of course, but we’ve all seen the effects of a limp-armed QB around these parts. i’d still take accuracy over arm strength, but it’s nice to have some zip on throws down the field instead of all these lame ducks.

Im not 100% sure.....

Clausen's Arm Strength

Above average. Not Matt Stafford. Recommend reading Mocking Dan’s evaluation of Clausen on Mocking the Draft, where he compared Clausen’s arm strength to Mark Sanchez’s.

While Clausen’s arm is strong enough for the NFL, he can’t accurately make all deep throws. On deep outs Clausen will take some zip off the ball and not deliver it as quickly. It will also take him a while to get deep passes out as he has to rely on his body to get the ball out. His arm will never be confused for Joe Flacco’s or Matt Stafford’s, but it’s every bit as strong as Mark Sanchez’s.

by Der Jaeger on Dec 29, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

does that mean that he can’t make those throws, or that he can’t make those throws yet?

I think his deep ball is mostly his deep ball. Guys can see their arm strength improve as they get into their mid 20s, but I think what you see is what you get with Clausen’s deep ball. It’s not bad, but he often puts a ton of air under it. I’ve seen people criticize his accuracy deep, but I think he’s got a good feel for the deep pass and regularly droped passes into Golden Tate’s lap 40 yards downfield without Tate having to slow up or jump for the ball. You could see a safety get over to make a play on the ball more often in the NFL though.

I think that those deep outs are more of a mental thing that require a lot of timing and trust in the WRs and that’s why he takes the heat off. I think he’s got the arm strength to fire them in there, but he’s playing with great WRs against college DBs and can afford to make slower, safer throws on the challenging passes. I wouldn’t hold it against him that he doesn’t show big time arm strength on those throws, but it’s far from a given that he’ll start to do that in the NFL though. I’d say that his ability to hit those routes with the better QBs in the league is questionable, but not a huge concern.

I’d call his arm strength average and Mark Sanchez was a good comparison in terms of velocity. And when I say something is average, that doesn’t mean I think it’s a bad thing. There’s 10 or more starters who throw a very impressive ball in the NFL, so to be above average in terms of arm strength, you’ve got to really put a lot on the football. I think Clausen’s arm is definitely stronger than Bradford’s.

So is a QB with average arm strength

a good fit in Buffalo? I really think a QB playing in the Buffalo winds should have above average to excellent arm strength. I am well aware that there are other important factors, but shouldn’t arm strength be a big part of the equation? The only QB I can get on board with the Bills taking in the first round is Mallett, and I am not sure about him. What is your read on Mallett.

I didn’t really get a chance to sit down and watch Arkansas this year. I have no clue what to think of Mallett, but I’ve seen enough to know that he’s got a really, really good arm. That’s all I got though.

I think Clausen’s got the arm to play in Buffalo. The Jets weren’t afraid to grab Sanchez to play in the new meadowlands. Even though Trent wasn’t a great bad weather QB, I don’t think his arm strength ever hurt him in the cold and I think Clausen has a better arm.

I’m still on the fence about Bradford’s arm and whether or not he’s a fit in Buffalo.

From what I have read, Clausen has the stronger arm....but who really knows????

For the life of me, I don’t know why they don’t put a gun on these guys at the combine/Pro Day.

Question: Would the speed of the throw be the most important criteria in determining how well a football cuts through the wind? How about the speed the ball is rotated?

"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf

by Joe P. on Dec 30, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

Here is part of the answer...
If the ball does not spin properly, air travels excessively under its tip as it descends, causing it to tumble and lose some of its forward momentum due to a greater cross-sectional area being exposed to the wind.

http://www.faqs.org/sports-science/Fo-Ha/Football-Passing-Aerodynamics.html

Now the question is…..What is the proper amount of spin (RPM) ?
