Quick look at some first round picks!
Matt Stafford, Lions - Passed for over 400 yards in one game. And his teammates love his toughness.
Aaron Smith, Seahawks - Been solid contributor to defense so far.
Mark Sanchez, Jets - Way too many interceptions and decisions. Needs to gain experience.
Jason Smith, Rams- Was just injured, but everybody claims Oher is most impressive tackle out of the draft so far.
Tyson Jackson, Chiefs-After eleven games, has only 10 tackles and no sacks.
Aaron Curry, Seahawks-Been playing outstanding football and one of the bright spots for Seahawks Defense.
Mark Sanchez, Jets - Way too many interceptions, needs to develop more and gain experience.
Darrius Heyward Bey - Another Al Davis reach, with the 1970's Raiders mindset. Has done nothing all season.
Brian Orakpo, Skins - 7.5 Sacks and Skins love him so far as an OLB.
Aaron Maybin - Where is Waldo? Need I say more!
Brian Cushing, Texans - Will probably win Defensive Rookie of the year honors! Been playing exceptional football.
Larry English, San Diego - Starting to see more time on the field and has had several sacks so far.
Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay - Playing better than Sanchez and studies film extensively.
Percy Harvin, Vikings - What a steal for the Vikings. Dangerous everytime he touches the ball.
Mike Oher, Ravens - Grading out as the best lineman for the Ravens. Might even make Pro Bowl.
Hakeem Nicks, Giants - The real deal early in the season, before injuries struck. Big, athletic, and strong!
Kenny Britt, Titans - Starting to contribute with Vince Young at Q.B.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Oh, so your point was that you don’t like Maybin. I… totally get that.

Orakpo
Haven’t really followed Orakpo, 7.5 sacks is damn good for a rookie. If he were drafted by the Bills as a 4-3 DE how many sacks do you think he would have accumulated so far?

Aaron Smith, Seahawks – Been solid contributor to defense so far.
Too bad he plays for Pittsburgh and was drafted in 1999. Jason Smith went #2 to the Rams and has started a whopping 5 games this year thanks to injuries.
Larry English, San Diego – Starting to see more time on the field and has had several sacks so far.Several equals 2. You also conveniently forget to mention that he only has 6 more tackles than Maybin despite playing a position that tends to rack up more tackles over the course of a season.
You’re kidding me right? You hate Maybin so much that you’re giving Freeman props for studying film extensively? Do you also high five him when he successfully wipes his butt?
Josh Freeman, Tampa Bay – Playing better than Sanchez and studies film extensively.
Hakeem Nicks, Giants – The real deal early in the season, before injuries struck. Big, athletic, and strong!
You can come out and say you hate Maybin without talking out your backside or at least try to correctly make your points. Nicks was the real deal by putting up 18 yards in the first week before he missed the next two games due to injury? He’s played in every game since then and been solid. Maybin is also big, athletic and strong!
And repeat. Had one catch in VY’s first start. Didn’t play the next week. 2 catches. 4 catches. 7 catches! Hey he actually did contribute like you said.
Kenny Britt, Titans – Starting to contribute with Vince Young at Q.B.
You conveniently left out
Andre Smith – injured before he could play. But he did get that big contract! Fat and fluffy.
Eugene Monroe – missed games due to illness, returned and was benched.
B.J. Raji – Only 4 more tackles than Maybin.
Michael Crabtree – that hold out was a thing of beauty. At least he’s producing and the real deal.
And I don’t feel like going any farther.
I love how Larry English’s 17 tackles and 2 sacks gets him “Starting to see more time on the field and has had several sacks so far” while Maybin’s 11 tackles just gets him blasted. I think it’s worth pointing out that Maybin is 27 or 28 months younger than English is too.
Or how about we give Buffalo some credit for finding two guards who have played much better than rookie guards ever do and already look like they were excellent picks. And they drafted that FS who has played pretty well two:
pick 39 – JAX – Eben Britton – starting RT and has done pretty well
40 – NE – Ron Brace – 3 tackles in six games, has limited value if they don’t switch back to a 3-4 defense.
41 – NE – Darius Butler – 22 tackles and two INTs as a nickel and dime CB
42 – Jairus Byrd – 8 INTs is one of the best totals for a rookie DB in the history of football
43 – CAR – Everette Brown – the guy many people wanted and ripped Buffalo for not taking has 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks
44 – MIA – Pat White – 0/3 passing and 12 carries for 50 yards. Would have been called a huge reach if it wasn’t a Parcells pick and was instead supposed to revolutionize the wildcat, but will never be a pocket passer or maybe even a 2nd string QB.
45 – NYG – Clint Sintim – 7 tackles this year for a Giants team that has had some injuries and mediocre players at LB.
It’s so, so easy to sit back and rip a team for every draft pick that doesn’t instantly work out. And weren’t you at least a little positive on Maybin after the draft? I feel like I remember you not being a huge fan of the Maybin pick, but I don’t think you really ripped it then? And it’s not like there weren’t players you were very high on who havn’t done much (Everette Brown, Clint Sintim)

For the future, I think Maybin’s fine. And that’s just the thing. The Bills tried to convince everyone that they were trying to win now. That is why so many people are pissed about Maybin. They expected him to contribute this year when he was drafted. If the team were any good, I’d probably be ticked he isn’t having much impact, but at least he’s getting some development time and lately a little more time to get himself on tape for the next regime.

That’s a great point. I’m not sure how Buffalo drafting three instant starters and Maybin isn’t trying to win right now, but fans are fickle like that. And first rounders are so heavily scrutinized. I’ve always found it funny how every move that losing teams make get so heavily criticized while the Pats and Steelers fans tend to be patient with guys like Ron Brace, Patrick Chung, Rashard Mendenhall and Lawrence Timmons because those fans have faith in the guys making the decisions.
Even for us who liked the Maybin pick and thought he wouldn’t do a ton this year, he’s still been a dissapointment as I thought he’d have a sack or two by now. I wasn’t expecting many tackles or consistent play, but I thought he’d wow us with his athleticism a few times this year. So, I totally get the frustration. I’m just surprised it comes up so often, especially in the form of fanposts specifically about Maybin.

You have to remember that when he was drafted we were expecting him to get a full preseason and training camp with the team, he wound up getting neither. I’ve chalked up some of his bad play to that.

Yes, and also trading your best offensive lineman, and cutting his replacement days before the season starts. Or, not signing a linebacker (or two)……I think I (and we as a fanbase) had unrealistic expectations of what this team could do. We somehow thought Trent would “get it”, our O-Line would magically gel, our D would get off the field, etc. Now that the team is below expectations, we look at that high first round pick as a wasted opportunity. That was my point.

trading your best offensive lineman
PPL need to get over this.. The man did not want to be a Bill anymore. He would not have played for us this year even if we didn’t trade him. Plus trading him is what allowed us to draft the best young interior line of the NFL.
Or, not signing a linebacker (or two)
You say that like they didn’ try to sign one. We probably the team that braught in the most LB’s to talk to. Problem is we can’t make any of them sign with us if they don’t want to.
I think I (and we as a fanbase) had unrealistic expectations of what this team could do
Entirely agreed, as I too was guilty of this.
We somehow thought Trent would "get it"
We had every reason to hope that he would.
our O-Line would magically gel
Most of us knew that our Tackles would be a concern on this line, we just didn’t think that it would be this bad.
our D would get off the field
Most of us knew that that would be a problem too.
we look at that high first round pick as a wasted opportunity
You are severely jumping the gun here. The vast majority of rookie DE’s are horrible their first year, heck even Mario Williams looked bad his rookie season and he was drafted first overall. Give Maybin the time that he deserves to develop. If he’s still this bad in his third year, then I’ll agree with you. Until then, calm down and let the kid develop.

I get what your saying about the Bills trying to convince everyone that they were trying to win now
But it had to be self evident to Everyone that Maybin wasn’t gonna contribute much this season. First of all he was what 20 when he was drafted. Secondly he didn’t have many pass rush moves when he was at Penn State he relied upon his speed. We all know that that wont work in the NFL. Finally he had a lengthy holdout. So if anyones shocked by his lack of production so far don’t be. However for those of you labelling him a bust…….I’m not gonna say what I think of you. And for those of you saying we should have drafted Orapko I have 2 things to say. 1. Get over it already. 2. Even if we had drafted Orapko our record would still be the same, unless of course he can also play LT,RT,and RG.
We don’t even know how well Orakpo would be doing if he was with the Bills, he’s playing a different position!!

Two words: ROOKIE SEASON
Get over youerself man. You overly praise some player when they are only doing marginally better then Maybin, and totaly neglect the fact that Maybin has actually been playing a lot better since Fewell took over (maybe it has something to do with the fact that he’s seeing a feild a lot more too). While his stats haven’t been ranking up, he has been putting a lot more pressure on opposing QB’s then earlier in the season (again, could have something to do will playing more and therefore playing with more confidence).
He might not have a sack yet, but he’s putting up good pressure against opposing QB’s. Once he gets more expirience and refines his technique those QB pressures are going to turn into QB sacks. Give the kid some time!

The past is past
We can’t do anything about who has been picked, but we an look forward to hopefully improving the trenches, and maybe a blue chip qb. Anyone watching this SUH kid from Nebraska against Texas. Good gracious. I’m bettin he’ll be off the board faster than he gets his double cheeseburgers out of their wrappers.

I love that you have “the past is past” as a headline, title thing and Tiger Woods as a profile image. I think it’s very fitting and totally hilarious. That said, I completely agree with the past is past philosophy. And Suh probably just had the best defensive performance I have ever seen from a college player. Unbelievable. It is too bad he’ll be long gone.

Aside from Maybin, it's worth noting the LT's in the first round
There were four LT’s taken in the first round last year — Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, Andre Smith and Michael Oher. Of the four, only Oher is having a notably better year than Demetrius Bell as a first-time NFL starter. Those who are hankering for the Bills to pick an OT with their first-round pick in 2010 might take note of that. In particular, those who are complaining that Bell has been prone to injury should pay attention to the fact that he has not missed more time than either of the Smiths or Monroe.
The cold hard fact is that rookies (Bell was a virtual rookie in 2009) at a difficult position like LT make a fair number of mistakes, are often inconsistent, and get injured from time to time. They are usually much better as of their second year as starters (for example, D’Brickashaw Fergusan of the Jets whose first year was very similar to Bell’s but who by his second year was among the better LT’s in the league).
by Macktruck on Dec 6, 2009 1:31 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
agreed, but it doesn't change the fact we need another starting T
Draft a LT and let Bell and the new guy duke it out. Loser plays RT.
"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf
No denying that either. We need a new tackle out of this draft, and early!
by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 7, 2009 1:05 AM EST up reply actions
The big problem, though, is all our other needs. If we want a potential starting LT we would probably have to use our first-round pick in a year when we also desperately need a QB, OLB, DT, etc. If you want an RT you can go second or third round. It’s nice to have competition at every key position, but does it make sense to use a first-rounder on an OT when we already have Bell who will have already gone through his rookie shake-down?
DT
I’m still waiting for an explanation on why this is such a pressing need.
Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.
by UZ on Dec 7, 2009 1:40 AM EST up reply actions
Me too. We may need an extra large DT for the rotation, but thats a 5th rounder, at most, not a first rounder.
by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 7, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions
Because Stroud is aging, Williams is a nice player but not a difference maker, and we don't have a 3rd DT
The Bills playing a scheme that requires you to have at least one above average DT out of the three. I am not saying we reach for a DT, but if Suh is there when the Bills pick…..I take him in a heart beat.
"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf
Exactly. I don’t think DT is much of a need compared to other spots, but it’s one of the most important positions and you don’t pass up on a good one when he’s the best player available.

But Bell has yet to proven he can be a better than average LT, IMO.
I am only slightly more confident he can start at RT. We need another starting T, and most likely at LT.
"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf
Agreed. I think that Bell could be a dominate RT because of how atheletic he is. But we need a LT badly.
by CanadianBillsFan on Dec 7, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions
But my point is that most of the OT’s who went in the first round in 2009 haven’t proved themselves either. You have to be patient at that position. And the fact that he is so athletic suggests that he belongs at LT (at RT you look more for size and strength).
If a player who has the ability to play LT can play RT as well. It doesn't work in reverse of course :-)
I am not willing to put all my eggs in Bell’s basket. And, Yes…….it is very possible that if we draft an LT he will only be average in his first year. I am willing to settle for average for another season if the potential to be very good/great exists.
"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf
Meredith has yet to prove he belongs on the 53 man roster

right, but has good size and potential
i think it was a good pick up

agreed.....I am not questioning the signing. But, I wouldn't count on him being a starter next season
"The Bills have no playoff aspirations" – Dan Dierdorf
Meredith is a swing tackl at best. Right now he’s only on our roster because of injury. He’s got a lot to prove.
