Coaching Decision Isn't Rocket Science.
Several weeks ago, when the Bills were chatting it up about possibly bringing in a big-name head coach, I thought it was the greatest news we as Bills fans could hear this season - that potentially big changes were on the horizon and wins were in the future. All because of the prospects of a Mike Shanahan or a Bill Cowheror whoever coming to resurrect this team.
But now that the dust has settled a bit and we've all dropped back down to reality I have to wonder if hiring a big-name coach is really all that necessary. I think that I, for one, had gotten so used to the Dick Jauron style of coaching (and sucking) that bringing in a big-name to replace him was the only solution. But then Perry Fewell proved that good coaching doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with the "big name". Fewell has done a great job motivating what little talent Jauron had amassed the past few years and made the games watchable again. I mean, in three games, a handful of talented players and some mediocre ones have made the Bills competitive in ways Jauron drew a blank on - that's the Perry Fewell difference. And Fewell isn't a big name... yet.
So sure, the big-name guys bring the big resumes - and wasn't Jauron a supposed big name when he came to Buffalo? Not a Cowher or Shanahan, of course, but Jauron was at least regarded in the same ballpark as Haslett or Billick... okay, not Billick - but Jauron was as big a name as some that we've heard recently.
I mean, he was more of a big name than Mike Mularkey or Gregg Williams. Back then anyway.
Basically, I think rather than signing a big-name coach the Bills should sign a big-name GM and let that guy hire someone based on the philosophy and work ethic and mentality he brings. If it's Perry Fewell then that's fine with me. Forget the fancy resume and name.
And if Ralph is so adamant about spending money - spend it on a FA QB. A play-maker. Please.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

There are no big name FA QBs. Jauron wasn’t a big name coach, the big name in that search was Holmgren. And I’m not sure that saying that he was on the level with Haslett is a good thing since you know, he kinda has a bad track record.

Uh, what? David Gettleman? He’s not a coach…

The thread quickly blurred into QBs...........
Our first step is not QB, or OL, or coach.
Its getting Gettleman.
Everything else will follow.

I get the desire to add a GM above all else (because I’m thinking the same thing), but it is possible to discuss the best options at QB, OL and coach without having a GM in place. We’re not making the decisions, so discussing them in the proper order doesn’t actually matter.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute

I personally don’t like the idea of bringing in a Pro Personnel guy to be our GM. Give me a guy who has excelled in the draft. Those are the guys that really know how a team is built.

I think we lack the most in the Pro personnel dept. Our drafts have not be stellar (1st rd trade busts), decent. Our track record for the FA we bring in is horrible. I think our best signing was TKO. The only exception i have right now would be D.Florence.
If Modrak stays, we better find someone who knows how to look at NFL players.

I agree that John Guy & Co. are a weak area, but that shouldn’t be relevant to who we bring in as a GM.

I can get quite negative about the decision making process
If Wison is picking the new management I have no confidence since he has a compelling record of failure. If his hired hands are making the decision, I have no confidence since the correct decision would be to replace themselves. Dilemma anyone?
