Window-Shopping For QB's
So, a friend of mine called me this morning asking me about the future of the Bills QB situation heading into next season - being a Broncos fan, I told him he should be worried about his own team. He brought up names like Jake Delhomme, Marc Bulger, and Jeff George. Obviously, he was joking though it wasn't too funny.
After hanging up on him, I made a mental list of QB's I wouldn't mind seeing in a Bills uniform in 2010 - based on their possible availability.
JASON CAMPBELL - 6'5", 230 - a young guy who is a lot better than people give him credit for and who is surely not going to make it through a regime change in Washington. With better receivers, which the Bills have, he could explode in an offense. He's also used to playing in cold weather which is obviously a factor.
SENECA WALLACE - 5'11", 205 - mobile as hell and fiery, his height will probably be an issue against teams that won't let him scramble. I don't know how much of an impact he'd make in the current Bills roster but he's better than what we have. Not sure about the weather factor. Seattle and Iowa State isn't Buffalo come winter-time.
MIKE VICK - 6'0", 215 - whatever. He is what he is - a big-name with a lot of baggage. I wouldn't complain if Buffalo picked him up but I'm not sure he'd be that good in Buffalo. Stills seems slightly mobile, guess. He wants to be the featured QB on a team and he'd probably get his wish in Buffalo. Maybe he'd play inspired - like he has something to prove. Weather doesn't seem to affect him either way.
ERIK AINGE - 6'5", 221 - totally unproven guy who has done pretty good when given his opportunities. He's young - big arm and mobile, etc. and seems fearless. Not sure about the weather factor. He could be brought in to compete with and push Brian Bromm. Ainge is the guy on this list I have the least amount of faith in coming to Buffalo.
The following are guys I considered for little under a second - then passed on quickly:
Dante Culpepper, David Carr, Rex Grossman, Brodie Croyle, Brady Quinn, and Troy Smith.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Jason Campbell I wouldn’t mind. He’s one guy who needs a change of scenery more than any other player in the NFL.
Seneca Wallace has rushed for all of 219 yards in 45 career games. Trent Edwards has rushed for 272 yards in 31 career games. I guess Trent is super mobile despite all evidence against that.
Mike Vick, pass. (I just completed a higher percentage of passes than he ever will.) Not only would I complain I wouldn’t watch a game next year. Which might be a plus. He’s a shell of what he once was and even that wasn’t a good QB. It would be a TO ticket selling grab and a pathetic one at that.
Erik Ainge has never taken a regular season snap as a professional football player so…
I wanted the Bills to draft Eric Ainge as a project QB in 2008
He signed a 4 year deal and last knew was the 3rd string QB with the Jets. So unless they are planning on releasing him, I am not sure how he is going to be available.

We need a qb who can throw in the wind and cold. Chad’s arm is done. He was successful in Miami because he didn’t have to make throws in Buffalo-type weather. He’d be horrible in Buffalo.

The wind is just as bad or worse in Giants Stadium and he did pretty well there.

He was average at best with the Jets, and now he’s 2 shoulder surgeries deep. It’s not realistic to think he’s going to have the arm strength to make the necessary throws.

So he was less than average at best with Miami, when he led them to 11-5, a division championship and a home playoff game?

No, I said he was good in Miami because he didn’t have to deal with the weather conditions. I never said he was less than average. If anything, he got better because of the change in location.
He was average at best when his arm was in good condition and he had to throw in bad weather. Now, you want him to deal with wind and eventually snow with a surgically repaired arm. That would really be sending the team in the right direction.
Trample the weak, hurdle the dead!
Miami actually brings a whole nother weather element into it.
The air is heavier thanks to humidity and passes can’t travel as far.

I’d say that Pennington was better in Miami because he had a better offensive line and a better running game. But that’s just me.

And you're entitled to your opinion
Basically, my point should be that we don’t need to rest our hopes on a has-been with a surgically repaired shoulder. Any franchise that does that is grasping at straws.
Trample the weak, hurdle the dead!
And my point is there aren’t many straws to grasp, and as we don’t have a plan, we’re stuck straw-grasping.
I’m not advocating Pennington for anything other than 2010 duty.

Remember that Jason Campbell will be a RFA this coming year and so would likely come with a steep price in terms of draft picks. He did look very impressive today, which will no doubt increse his market value.
Depends
if a new CBA is signed before March he becomes a UFA. If it’s not it he will be a RFA. Not that it matters. Danny has been looking to get rid of him for years. In order to get draft pick compensation for him they’d have to tag him and that means a big contract for a player he doesn’t want.
I’m betting there will no CBA before March. And if he is an RFA, we would need to give them a draft pick even if they don’t tag him.
Not entirely true. If the Redskins don’t offer him a contract the Bills don’t have to give them any compensation. I don’t think the Redskins are going to offer him a contract, personally.

Why not?
Why wouldn’t they offer him a 1st round tender, which isn’t a whole lot (in the $2-3M range)? If the Redskins are looking to draft someone this year, don’t you think they’d want a veteran presence to keep the seat warm? Why let Campbell walk when you can bring him back somewhat cheap for a veteran, or even trade him if someone wants him?

Todd Collins?
Why would they spend that much money on a guy they clearly don’t value? They may offer a lower tender in the 1-2M range. This is all speculation, of course, since the new coach may have other ideas. Didn’t they try to trade for Jay Cutler this year because they didn’t like Campbell? Now all the sudden he’s good enough to start next season?

Personally I’d be shocked if Campbell didn’t ask to be released this off season. The Skins don’t want him as a starter, they’re looking for a new coach that will probably want to bring in his own QB. There’s no insentive for Campbell to want to stay in Washington and there is no insentive for Washington to even give him a first round tender. The most I se happening is Washington giving him a low tender to see if they can’t get like a 5th rounder for him or something like that.

Whats wrong with Troy Smith?
He was the starter last year in Baltimore until he got sick and missed a lot of time in the preseason. He was a winner at Ohio state and he’s mobile. I think he’d be a nice pick up if we don’t land anyone else who could start right away, and I think he could be pretty good.
I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing what he can do now that he’s apparently matured into an NFL QB (mostly specualtion). But a former Heismann winner is always a good player to look into.

Doug Flutie and one year wide receiver Darren Flutie of the San Diego Chargers.

With better receivers, which the Bills have, he could explode in an offense.
I’d say that Santana Moss, Antwan Rande El, Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Chris Cooley and Fred Davis are a much better unit than Lee Evans, Steve Johnson, James Hardy, Shawn Nelson and Derek Schouman, because that’s what the comparison would be for next year…..

I’d trade our receivers for Washington’s in a heartbeat.
The other prospects listed are worthless, or close to it.
Ohio, you left out Pennington.

those are some lousy options
Buffalo will need to be creative. The old stand-by excuse of “there was nobody out there available” is for losers. Buffalo will need to aggressively get a top notch draft pick to develop or trade for a stuck-behind-a-superstar youngster. Jason Campbell, Michael Vick, and the rest of these flunkies are nothing but hail mary passes for this hail mary franchise.
And who exactly are these stuck behind a superstar youngsters?
Jim Sorgi? Kellen Clemens? Brian Hoyer? Dennis Dixon? Brodie Croyle? Billy Volek? Matt Leinart? Maybe Kolb but the Eagles only have McNabb under contract for another season.
by twoeightnine on Dec 7, 2009 12:22 AM EST up reply actions
I'm not sure you can completely write off Dixon
From what I saw last week sunday, he wasn’t completely horrible. I know he made some costly inexperienced mistakes and holds the ball a little far and away, but this kid is practically a rookie and was absolutely amazing in college. Also, if he hadn’t blown out his knee he would have been a much higher draft pick than he was. I think he could still yet be a hidden gem but still needs time to develop behind Rothlisberger or a guy like Pennington
I still BILLIEVE.....in next year

He looked real good filling in this year, after looking so terrible last year.

Wouldn’t mind looking into jason Campbell, I think that he’s highly underated and could develop into a great QB with good coaching. i mean all the elements are there.
But Chad Pennington is a proven quality QB that is also a good teacher to any QB that we could draft. And he’s almost certainly an UFA this summer. He’d be my first choice if we go the FA route.

David Garrard
Jax rumored to want Tebow as a draw.
Trade for Garrard, include Trent in the mix as their backup for next year
I'm big on Jason Campbell.
He’s young, and has Dan McGuire size (hopefully the comparisons end there). I like him better than Pennington for one reason: IF the Bills need to rely on Pennington for any length of time, I become very worried. He’s fragile. Campbell has way more upside if the Bills needed / wanted to turn to him for good.
There’s no guarantee any college QB pans out, so why not adopt a rather young one who’s been broken in a bit?
Yes, I know RFA is likely to be a detriment to signing him, but I like his talent as a QB.

One of the big things for me is that I would be completely unwilling to give up draft picks for a stop gap QB. If they want to make a move for a Kevin Kolb type who they could commit to long term, then I can get behind that. Trading for Seneca Wallace or giving up picks to sign an RFA to play while a kid learns on the bench doesn’t interest me at all. And my logic behind that is every move this offseason should be made with the criteria being: does X move get Buffalo closer or further away from a Super Bowl. Anything that moves Buffalo further away from that in exchange for a slightly better team next year is a terrible idea in my book.
So that leaves unrestritected free agents or guys who could be released as those who make the most sense to me. Even if Pennington’s arm strength makes him completely unable to win on a windy day or in Decemeber here, I think he is by far the best option. In a vet QB, I’m looking for stability and somebody who can run the offense while a rookie QB learns from watching. Obviously, the vet should be a hands on teacher too, but I want the vet to run the offense well enough, regardless of the outcome, that the rook can learn just by watching the film of the games. To me, it couldn’t get better than Pennington for that role.

He’s pretty young I believe he’s a FA this offseason and he’s still got some potential. Plus he’ll be cheap.
