Comparing current Bills to Super Bowl teams
There is a lot of debate regarding how to build a winning organization. I recall the Polian year's and would watch in astonishment at the brilliant moves he would make,(the trade for Cornelius Bennett), etc. Unfortunately, with the Bills having not made the playoffs for 11 straight years now, the whole administration and team is in shambles in my opinion. They are still a long way from being a competitive team and their personnel decisions continue to be a joke. To back up my statement, let's compare the starting lineup of the Super Bowl Years to the current roster. I personally cannot find one advantage at any position overall for the current starters. Or any bright spots, but it is nice to reflect on the Glory years.
QB - Jim Kelly verse two headed Trent Fritzpatrick. <> JK obviously.
RB - Thurman Thomas/Ken Davis against two headed Marshawn Jackson. <> Thurman
WR - Andre Reed, James Lofton - Terrell Owens, Lee Evans <> Might be closest argument for comparable talent, but shell out too much money for receiver's that are not being utilized enough.
TE- Pete Metzalaars - Shawn Nelson <> Even backup Butch Rolle scored more T.D.s than current TE's.
Offensive line - Will Wohlford, House Ballard, Jim Ritcher, Glenn Parker, Kent Hull <> 11 linemen currently on I.R. - Bills had 3 Pro Bowlers on the line, as we watched Thurman run through holes you could drive a car through.
Defensive Line - Bruce Smith, Jeff Wright, Leon Seals <> Kelsey, Stroud, Kyle Williams, Schoebel - Bills went with 3:4 back then, but Bruce alone wins this comparison. And to think he had all those sacks in a 3:4 defensive scheme.
Linebackers - Talley, Conlan, Ray Bentley, Bennett <> Kawika Mitchell, Poz, Ellison <> Three of the Four during Super Bowl years played in the Pro Bowl at least one time.
Secondary - Kelso, Odomes, Leonard Smith, Henry Jones <> McKelvin, J.Byrd, Whitner, B. Scott <> This could be a toss-up, since I always wished they had a bigger safety other than Kelso, who now teaches at St. Mary's in Lancaster and is a great guy. But despite his brains and picks, cannot forget him getting run over so many times.
Kicker <> Lindell over Norwood - Bills would have had at least one Super Bowl victory under their belt.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Isn’t that Whitner? Minus the brains and picks?
And it’s a toss up on whether or not Lindell hits that kick. Norwood was 60% from 40-49, Lindell is 63%.
He had a fantastic season the year after.

pretty sure you're right
I think I remember a game winner against the raiders that was quite nice, but he might have missed 2 fgs during the game…any way, he was a fan favorite before that super bowl
It's not all that bad.... Go Bills 2010 !!!!
He was cheered at the post-SB rally, too. Steve Christie was better and that’s why he replaced Norwood but even after the kick nobody hated Scotty.

what do you mean nobody hated him? Maybe hate is a harsh word, but Id say resentment was right there in the forefront of many a Bills’ fans minds. But of course, we shouldn’t have been in a position where a FG decided the biggest game ever… but whatever, Norwood was still a very accurate kicker and Christie was brought in after the 91 season because he had a bigger leg
It's not all that bad.... Go Bills 2010 !!!!
Sorry. Rational people didn’t hate him. :-) They were disappointed, sure. But as you said we had one of the best offenses around and we had to rest our hopes on the leg of a kicker.

Henry Jones
took over for Leonard Smith as SS if I am correct. Odomes was on one side and we had . . . J.D. Williams? I recall Smith got hurt prior to one of the SBs and never quite returned.
WR-wise, it’s more about chemistry than raw talent. Kelly had more chemistry with his guys than our QB has with Evans and Owens.
I liked Kelso. He always had 5-6 INTs/year and he always played so deep that he prevented the long ball. I do recall him getting the wind knocked out of him after he tackled Ernest Byner or someone like that.
Jeff Wright was very light by today’s standards, right. Wasn’t he 275lbs?
That Superbowl era was defined by the O-Line, Kelly and Thomas. I think the other pieces were, even though awesome, interchangeable. Meaning, our current team plus a stud O-Line and stud QB is a super bowl team.
Brian Moorman is better than Chris Mohr!!!!!
I personally cannot find one advantage at any position overall for the current starters.

3-4 was light
You are exactly right! Jeff Wright weighed 270-275, Leon Seals weighed 265, and Bruce was anywhere from 265-270, i believe. I think that was our problem against the Skins and Giants especially, when you are going against the Hogs and lineman that weigh 300 lbs., the offense is going to pound you. And of course, Belicheck only rushed two lineman against Kelly in Super Bowl one. He said the Giants will win, Jim Kelly will not beat us and Thurman will have over 100 yards. And unfortunately, he was correct…..The Bills were like the Indianapolis Colts back then, but better………Most younger Bills fans probably don’t realize that.
Agree
When do we get a Bill Polian type decision maker back?
"Next time I get the opportunity I am going to hold on and make a better decision." ~ Leodis McKelvin. (Can't ask for anythitng more than that)
What about Tom Telesco (Indy's director of player personnel)?
1. He’s worked under Polian going all the way back to their first year with Carolina (1995)
2. He interned for the Bills in college (1991-94)
3. HE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN BUFFALO

Might be a great pick for GM. Especially if we can’t get DeCosta (or whatever his name is).

In that era, they weren’t considered light. The Fridge was a phenom during his time, but he’d be undersized on the Vikings front line.

I’m just wondering what the relevance is in comparing a Superbowl team to a perenial loser. Of corse our present team is going to look bad by comparison, it’s a no contest.
