Brett Favre to retire
I know this is getting old but he has announced that he is retiring. Given that he resided in the Bills division it is a bit more relevent. This gives the Jets $13MM in cap space, which they desperately needed. They also have to give Green Bay a 3rd round pick this year while they get back a 7th rounder pick in 2010.
My question is was the Jets pickup of Brett Favre a complete failure and does this set that team back because they have no viable for a QB option for 2009? Does this better position the Bills within their division for 2009? I would have to think we are at least the Jets equal, maybe even better after FA and the Draft. I don't think the Jets, minus some restructuring of contracts and outright releases, will have the cap space to go after quality players.
Overall, I think this will prove to be a benefit for the Bills in 2009.

It doesn’t really kill the Jets as much as I would have liked it to. If they never acquired Favre they would have gone forward with Pennington. While Chad did play well this year, his age and injury history suggest that the Jets really only could have gotten about 2 or 3 more good years out of him. Clemmens was a 2nd round pick only 3 years ago, he still has some upside and could develop. If they sign a vet and let him compete with Clemmens for the starting spot they really aren’t that far off from where they were without Favre.

the problem
is that there are no QB’s in FA that would be a viable option. Maybe Garcia but too many headaches develop when he’s around.
Clemens is probably their only starting option at this point. We at Buffalo Rumblings (at least some) have preached the continuity thing so I’m assuming it would be the same for a team that will have another new starting quarterback in 2009.

there isn't only Garcia.
Donte Culpepper proved that he can still play pretty well when he was with the Lions this year. Granted he didn’t win any games, but he didn’t have much help either. I’d see him as a viable option to compete alongside Clemmens for the jets starting job… although I’ve got the feeling that i’m part of the very small minority that thinks so.

I think Donte will stay with Detroit, the guys there seem to like him
Dark horse? JP Losman, he will be cheap, has starting experience, and it would baffle/piss Bills fans off.

I would be giddy with joy if the Jets signed Zohan.

Hence the baffle/piss line pal
I would be baffled and quite happy if they did get JP to start. Only JP lovers would be mad that JP is now playing against the Bills, needless to say, I ain’t in that crowd!

HA! I think Bills fans would love it. I know I would, and I would especially love hearing Jets fans talk themselves into Losman being the savior. Hahaha~!!!

I'll be honest
Kellen kinda scares me. Maybe it’s just because I don’t know he has a noodle for an arm, or is guaranteed to throw at least one TAINT against us.

Sure they have some line talent on both sides of the ball but they need a QB bad.

Yes the Favre trade was a complete disaster for the Jets.
I think they have plenty of cap space with Favre’s salary and the release of David Barrett to sign at least one good player and fill out their roster with some other decent options. It is really easy to work around the cap. Say they were to go after Karlos Dansby for example, they could give him a 7 year, 49 mil contract (which is pretty huge) and give him a 17.5 mil signing bonus and the league minimum for a veteran of his experience and his first year cap hit is hardly over 3 mil.
I wonder who NY’s starting QB, backup QB, highest paid QB and fan’s favorite to be the starter in 2010 or 2011 will be. Each answer could be so many different players. I don’t think Kellen Clemens is the answer and considering there is a new coaching staff he might not even get a fair shot at winning the job kinda like John Beck got immediately passed over in Miami. Brett Ratliff could surprise. A free agent like Jeff Garcia or Byron Leftwich might make the most sense. You have to think that Rex Ryan and his staff will want to get their own QB in the draft to build around. I bet the Jets have a rookie starting by midseason and I bet it doesn’t work out for Ryan half as well as Flacco and that defense did in Baltimore.
I’m guessing 6 wins and a last place finnish for the Jets this year. They are getting old at a lot of positions (Thomas Jones – 31, Laveraneus Coles – 31, Kris Jenkins – 30, David Bowens, Eric Barton, Shaun Ellis and Alan Faneca are all 32, Damian Woody is 31, Kenyon Coleman and Bryan Thomas are both turning 30) and I expect Ryan to really try and turn a lot of the roster over in the next few seasons.

You are so right. I thought that move was a disaster for the Jets and sure enough it turned out to be. Now they are 2-3 years away from having a decent QB. What a shame. I didn’t realise how old they are getting. Ryan has his work cut out for him.

They have a lot of great young players too, but that offseason spending spree is going to come back to hurt them if they can’t find a QB soon. Is there any worse situation that a team can be in to have a roster built to win now, but no QB? A shame? I love it!

I remember thinking when Kelly retired that the Bills were 2-3 years away from great QB play. Oops!

Reading about Brett I cam across this nugget:
Scouts Inc. ranks the best free-agent quarterbacks as Kurt Warner, Kerry Collins, Jeff Garcia, Byron Leftwich and J.P. Losman.
His name is on that list? Seriously??

Oh snap! We just couldn’t see J.P.’s real value like Scouts Inc. can.
No one believes this, especially the Jets.

get the DIVA out of the NFL. Favre was overrated his whole career. He won one Super Bowl and played the game with that southern miss style….good for him. I won’t miss yah!

So have the Jets, and their fans are quick to point it out to Bills fans.
Favre was my favorite player because he played the game like any kid growing up would want to. He was old-school (with a little bit of help from pain killers, I know). He was tough, unafraid of the big play and the big risk. He seemed to transcend typical athelete monkor for much of his career. He had a fervor for the game like no one else in the modern NFL.
Was he the best? No way. Was he the best of his era, probably not. I think Steve Young had him beat. But man, was he great to watch, for me anyway.
