Tag deadline coming up... Who's going to be a FA?

The tag deadline is fast approaching (Feb. 19th) and a few teams have already made their move, with many more expected.  Adam Shefter of NFL.com is reporting that the Cardinals are going to put the franchise tag on LB Karlos Dansby, effectively taking him off the market, sot he question begs, who's next?  Pat Kirwin, over at NFL.com has a nice breakdown of potential players who could be tag.  For those too lazy to follow the link, he thinks Suggs will be the man tagged in Baltimore, but thinks Peppers could be heading for free agency - although, Peppers recently reiterated his desire to play for a 3-4 team (please not Miami, New England or the Jets!).

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

GB they say is where Peppers is headed

Plus it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Dansby and Suggs tagged. Peppers is definately not coming to Buffalo, he wants to play football with his hand OFF of the ground.

Peppers wants to be the first 6’7" linebacker.

The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.

yeah...

I think he really has his heart set on a 3-4 team, which is ashamed, he’s built perfect for a 4-3 end! Some 3-4 team will be pretty lucky to get him.

Doubt he’ll be a Jet. How many OLB’s can they give huge money to?

A guy i'm going to watch...

Is O.J. Atogwe. 5-11, 220 pound SS from St. Louis. His numbers last year were pretty impressive: 85 tackles, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 interceptions, and he’s only 28.

From the article:
“St. Louis Rams
They might consider tagging safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, but I think they will pass.”

If Atogwa isn't tagged

I think we should ga after him HARD. he’s exactly the type of playmaker that we’ve been looking for in our backfield. If we’d only go after one top tier player, i’d be happy if it was him.

he’ll probably be a deadline tag, but if he isn’t, theres that if again, then we should jump on the oppertunity.

I could see Peppers going to the Pats

IF it were a straight up trade of Cassel for Peppers. I see no way the Pats would give up their 1st and Cassel for him, and I know a franchise tag = a 1 usually. Thoughts?

There are rumors that the Panthers are close to re-signing OT Jordan Gross. If that happens today or tomorrow, Peppers will be tagged, and it’ll take a king’s ransom to trade for him. The Pats are one of the few teams with the ammo to pull off a deal like that, but I’m not sure where he fits there. NE has enough quality defensive linemen to choke a rancor.

evan if they sign Gross....

The Panthers have to worry about the astronomical cap it. Tagging Peppers would eat up all of thier available cap space (and more). I think they would have to feel pretty confortable that they can either (a) extend him or (b) trade him and from Peppers comments, I don’t think they can be sure of extending him. That’s why they may decide not to tag him. Even if they do tag him, they’re going to be in a bind – the quicker they move him the quicker they can free up the cap space to make moves to improve their team. This is an interesting scenario, but in this case, the Panthers aren’t holding all the cards. They may not get as much in trade value if they would if they weren’t dealing with such a large cap hit. That said, they’re still getting a get a pretty return, just not as much as some are expecting.

I think Peppers vaults their D to an elite level (as he would with any team), and the Panters desperately need a QB.

Nah, the Panthers don’t desperately need a QB. Jake Delhomme is John Fox’s guy. They might want a guy to develop for the future, but Delhomme will start there in 2009.

That’ll be a mistake, imo, and John Fox’s undoing in Charlotte. Delhomme is clearly not the same player he was before the injury. He was nearly a liability to them getting a playoff spot last season.

Yes and No

Peppers old d-line coach is with the Pack and they say that is a very strong possibility. Carolina does not have the cap space to tag Peppers and keep Gross while signing their draft picks. Delhomme is TRULY not the same QB he was before the surgery, but the playcalling in their playoff game with the Cards was TERRIBLE.

Sean Jones is VERY overrated, but I think Atogwe is a PLAYMAKER that the Bills NEED.

If the Pats swing a deal involving Peppers and Cassel I would be a very irate Bills fan.

The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.
