NFL Combine Coverage Day 1: Open Thread
NFL Network coverage of the NFL Combine starts this morning at 11:00 AM with OL, TE and K. For those who are fortune enough to have the NFLN (like yours truly), it should be a fun time watching and evaluating potential new Buffalo Bills. For those who are not so lucky, check right here for updates throughout the day.
Personally, this is one of my favorite times during the off-season. I love watching, evaluating and comparing the players' skills as they go through all the drills. From the workout wonders to the high profile athletes, the scouting combine always delivers some surprises.
On today's menu (after all, it's not known as a "meat market" for no reason) are kickers, O-Linemen and tight ends. Arguably, two of Buffalo's biggest needs (TE and C) could be filled in April by guys who are working out today. We'll keep a close eye on all players at those positions. Here are some specific names of guys we'll be watching closely:
- Max Unger (C - Oregon)
- Eric Wood (C - Louisville)
- Jonathan Luigs (C - Arkansas)
- Antoine Caldwell (C - Alabama)
- A.Q. Shipley (C - Penn State)
- Brandon Pettigrew (TE - Oklahoma St)
- Jared Cook (TE - South Carolina)
- Shawn Nelson (TE - Southern Miss)
- Travis Beckum (TE - Wisconsin)
- James Casey (TE - Rice)
Finally, everyone should take a look at Gil Brandt's article over at NFL.com about what NFL teams look for in combine drills. He provides some great insight about what to look for and what not to look for. He also provides this super-helpful chart:

Andre Smith
Apparantly he got up in the weight room and said he hasn’t been working out, doesn’t feel like he’s ready and will wait until his pro day to workout. He also went missing at some point throughout the day and there are conflicting reports if he’s still even there.
Mayock and Co. are shocked that he would do/say something like that.
John I.
Annnnd there goes his shot at the #1 pick.

Mayock: “I’ve thought I saw everthing” He’s not my thrid OT anymore. I’m going to drop him down. I don’t see any intelligence, willing to learn.

Centers
Mayock:
- Center class is real good
- Lugis looked real good running the 40, but has really short arms
- Mayock thinks that only Unger is potentially a first rounder (didn’t mention Mack)
John I.
Isn’t Mayock one of the folks who has Mack listed as like his third center?

yes
I’m not sure why though. I haven’t heard why he feels that.
by gatornation on Feb 21, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions
I think the majority opinion for folks who grade Mack out lower than others is that many feel he’s not a fit for every scheme. They don’t like his pass protection, and think he’d only fit in well with a non-zone-blocking scheme that emphasizes the run. That’s why many think he’s only a good fit in places like Minnesota and Pittsburgh (who, ironically, may very well draft him).
But Mayock might have a completely different reason altogether.

ran the 40.
Luigs did look fluid in running the 40. He needs to get stronger.
Unger’s put on weight, I believe he weighed in at 309.
James Casey put up 28 reps in the bench. pretty impressive for a baseball guy !!
If the Bills wait until the 3rd round to fill Center, he would be a good pickup

He seems like the most natural fit in terms of what the Bills currently ask their offensive line to do.

But he’s not strong in the lower body. He’d be OK if we get a vet in FA and he hits the weights for a couple of years.
everything goes better with a BIG MACK
I don’t disagree with that assessment, but Buffalo runs a zone-blocking scheme, for the most part. They like big guys with athleticism (obviously, who doesn’t). Luigs is that type of player.

Lots of controversy/disagreement about him
He’s 6-1, 304 pounds. Shortest arms at the Combine. Can’t play guard – one position player.
But… Mayock loves his attitude. O-line coaches love him. Mayock thinks he’ll be a starter in this league.

very good trade bait
I would be hard pressed to pass him up though. They (Mayock and co) made a good point about Heath Miller. A similar thing happened to him and people passed on him and Cowher couldn’t believe it. Snatched him up and got a great steal. Mayock stressed that you have to “watch the tape” and whatever his timed speed, he plays fast.

My problem is that I don’t like any of the DE’s at #11, they are not great fits. And we used a draft pick last year on Ellis which we need to start seeing results this year. So if great athletes like you suggest are available then I am all for it!
I must say that I am really warming to the idea of Pettigrew at #11 and hopefully Mack is available at #42. We could take a chance on Connor Barwin in round 3

More news...
Crabtree:
doctors on Friday found a slight stress fracture… after tests, found out that it happened recently. Have to have a screw put into his left foot. No pro day. No running before draft. Teams have to draft him “as is.” But the surgery is the “right thing to do”
Draft status: TO has the same thing, ddin’t affect him. Same with Jonathan Stewart (who still went 13 overall). Teams are either going to say “we like him” or “we don’t like him” It’s all about a team’s “comfort” level with taking him
John I.
Yeah, and Dan Marino smoked pot at the University of Pittsburgh and fell into the Dolphins’ lap in the 1983 NFL draft. Warren Sapp, Randy Moss, etc.

I get a kick out of all these knee-jerkers
who think that all these players will “rise” or “fall” based on the latest break of minute information or every time the direction of the wind changes. These players haven’t played a game since late December/early January. Yeah, this postseason process is part of gathering information and evaluation. However, the fan overreaction/overanalysis we are going to get over the next 2 months is about to get ridiculous.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
I thought it was ridiculous that Malcolm Kelly fell so far because of the crappy 40 time he ran at his pro day. Everyone who was interested in him saw him play and saw what he could do on the field, so just because he ran a bad 40 time that all but negates that stuff he has already done? Silly.
Terrell Suggs dropped like an anvil on draft day because of his 40 times, how did that work out?
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

If we don’t sign a FA, the Bills can’t be stupid enough to go with what we have on the roster. If the run on Centers starts late 1st or early 2nd round, your best players will be gone by the end of the second round. We will need someone who can start day 1.

Hey K...
My guy over at Garnet & Black Attack, the South Carolina SBN blog, said this to me:
How would you describe his blocking abilities? (did he ever have to block or was he split out wide, etc.)
Cook’s blocking abilities (or maybe it’s desire to block) aren’t the best. We lined him up split wide in some formations, and when he lined up inside, he often got beaten off the line. You may have heard that South Carolina was one of the worst running teams and gave up lots of sacks last year. Cook was as guilty as anyone in that regard. With coaching, though, he could become a better blocker if he has the will to do so. He has the size and strength.

Facts?
Brandon Pettigrew’s production was not very impressive. 42 catches for 472 yards and 0 touchdowns as a senior. Not much better before that.
I highly doubt that anyone has Brandon Pettigrew as one of the top 11 players in this draft.
I’m not arguing what OBD will do. I’m arguing what OBD should do.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
Oklahoma State ran the ball on 64.1% of its offensive plays last season. They also have one of college football’s best young receivers in Dez Bryant, who had 87 grabs at 17 yards per grab and a whopping 19 touchdowns. Pettigrew was the only other Cowboy with more than 40 grabs.
I don’t give a rip about his production knowing that he comes from an incredibly run-oriented offense and has one of CFB’s best receivers stealing touches from him. The fact that he grabbed 42 balls impresses me knowing that; it hardly discourages me. He also averaged 11.2 yards per reception. The guy can ball, and when I hear people label him as a blocking tight end, I absolutely cringe.
If he runs anything less than 4.7, you can bet a LOT of money that he’ll be Buffalo’s pick at 11, and if (when?) that happens, I’ll cringe when I hear people complaining. He’s as sure a bet in this year’s draft as anyone, and for a coach on the hot seat, that’s going to be a HUGE selling point.

I don’t think it hurts him at all. The worse he runs, the higher the chances Buffalo can entertain a trade down to get him.

I think Pettigrew is a good player with a high floor. However, consideration as top 11 material just boggles my mind.
Again, I’m not arguing what OBD will do. I’m arguing what OBD should do.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
Hip turning drills
The drill: Had to back-peddle and turn your hips in the direction the coach points the ball and then turn and tun on command…
Lugis: Was high, not super fluid. Commentary: Concern with him is whether he’ll be able to anchor
Shipley: Looked fluid. Short and stocky.

High praise for him from Mayock… loves his versatility (can play four positions)
He’s a starting center in this league… may be at the very end of the first round

Wow, that is good news.

Impressive numbers
4.42 is the best so far among TEs
4.49 in the second one… looked like he almost pulled him Hammy, but said he was fine
41 inches in verticle jump (best among TEs)
10 feet, 3 inches (best among TEs)
John I.
It’ll be interesting to see how high Pettigrew goes, because Cook should be right on his heels now.

Tight End 40's
Jarad cook 4.42 (thrid fastest this decade – Mayock: good in-line blocker)
James Casey 4.71
Devon Drew: 4.78
Dan Gronkowski: 4.78
Anthony Hill: 4.81 (Mayock: good in-line blocker)
John I.
So Cook can block, catch and run a 4.42? Why is he not being mentioned in the top 25 of this draft?
~K
"I’m Kurupt with Buffalo Rumblings. I am worth hundreds!"
Good question.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t ever get mentioned in the top 25 so the Bills can pick him either late in the first (after dropping back) or in the 2nd.
others...
Conelious Ingrem: 4.62 w/ a slip(Thrid on Mayock’s list)
Jarad Bronson: 4.72
D.J. Johnson: 4.78 (looking at him as a HB/FB)
John I.
Keep an eye on Bronson come draft day if no TE for us on day 1
He has some wheels and is a good catcher, and while not techinically as sound as Pettigrew at blocking, he is a more than willing effort guy, some coaching up could fix that. He is on my dark horse list for the draft for us.
I told the witch doctor that I was in love with the Buffalo Bills, and instead of telling me to say "Oh eeh oh oh ah, ting tang walla walla wing bang" in order to make me feel better he told me to buy a gun and end it.
That’s what Jason Peters is for, right? LOL…

underwhelming
can block but will not be able to separate at the NFL level. No way we should take him at #11.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
Was that his first or his second time? I’m assuming first…

Mayocks Top Five
1. Pettigrew: 4.85
2. Shawn Nelson: 4.53
3.Cornelious Ingram 4.62
4. James Casey: 4.71
5. Chase Coffman (won’t run w/ foot injury)

He just look bad running. Very stiff. No way we take him at #11. It would make no sense. We tried to trade for Tony G., right? Which means the Bills are interested in more of a receiving TE. Pettigrew is not that guy. I don’t know if Brian has “talked” with someone on the Bills staff, but if so, I hope they are not using him to spread misinformation.

I could not disagree with this more. Gonzalez is a fine blocker, it is just that his receiving skills are so good that that part of his game is overlooked. The same is true of Pettigrew only in reverse, his blocking skills are so good and he didn’t play in a big time throwing offense so his receiving skills get overlooked.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
did you see the tape they played on him
The guy can barely get separation at the college level. He uses his body to shield the defender from the ball because he is so slow. I will pass on him.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do

He uses his body to shield the defender from the ball because he is so slow.
A) He isn’t slow, he’s just got average speed.
B) What’s preventing Pettigrew from using his body to shield defenders in the NFL? It’s not like he’s leaving smuf-land and entering the land of the giants, man.
Good tight ends exploit the seam (that’s what she said). There’s two ways to do this – size (Witten) or speed (Gates). (Oh, and that’s what she said.) Pettigrew will be able to make plays downfield because he’s gigantic, much in the same way that the gigantic Pete Metzelaars (slower than molasses in January) and Jay Riemersma (ran like an old woman) were.

Don't we already have one or two TEs that run like old women?
He is by far the slowest TE to run today. In the NFL, the defender will close and get a piece of the ball.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
Look, I’m not saying he’s perfect, and you’re right that he’ll struggle to separate. But that isn’t a reason to hate the guy as a prospect. I think everyone’s on board with you (here at least) that taking Pettigrew at 11 isn’t ideal.
I’m just trying to spend the next couple of months softening the blow for y’all.

I don't hate him
I just don’t think he is what the Bills should be looking for in a TE given what we need vs what we already have on the roster. And at #11 he would be a worse pick than Whitner at #8.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
I’m not promoting drafting Pettigrew at #11, but here are a few things to keep in mind about speed and separation:
Receivers can be open without getting separation. What’s most important is that they catch the ball. Without separation, receivers can still catch the ball for a variety of reasons:
Size allows them to shield the defender away from the ball.
Ability to make contested catches, catch in a crowd, and catch on contact.
Long arms and excellent hands provide a wide catching radius and a big window for a quarterback to throw into. This also allows them to extend and catch away from their body, preventing defenders from making a play on the ball.
Jumping ability.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
Mayock on Pettigrew
I bet a lot of teams in the second half of the first round that are rooting for him to run a bad time
Billick: Doesn’t have huge separation, but great use of hands. Called him a "complete package’

Pettigrew stinks has fallen out of the first round
I think we can stop this Pettigrew at #11 talk now. He ran a 4.85 followed by a 4.97. That is essentially a 5. He has fallen out of the first round.
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.
Again, I re-iterate: John Carlson ran a 4.89 last year, and it didn’t hurt his perceived draft value in the slightest.
Pettigrew is still a first-round prospect.

Yes, but what I’m saying is that Carlson was considered a second-round pick, ran a 4.89, and everyone thought he’d slide to the third or maybe the fourth. But then he went in the second. The time didn’t hurt his perceived draft value.
And that’s why Pettigrew will still be a first-round pick. His perceived draft value won’t change, either.

Pettigrew
He did not hurt his stock at all, he was expected to run in that range. He is a complete tight end, there are not many. Witten is one of them and Mayock says Pettigrew compares favorably to him. Who would not want Witten on our team.
