WTF
Aren’t the Texans going to give him the highest tender? Is this team dumb enough to give up a 1st rounder?

I can’t find anything on the latest regarding Daniels’ tender, but did run into another interesting article in my journeys. It’s now on the front page.

oh I know. But it wouldn’t make sense since I assume Houston gives him the highest tender, and they should.

The fact that they haven’t tendered him yet is indicative that they’re trying to work out a long-term deal. They’d be smart to do it; he’s a HUGE part of a really solid Texans offense. I’d be shocked if they don’t have him signed to a long-term extension by next Thursday night.

Im confused now.....
So many agree with the projections of possibly taking a TE like Pettigrew in rnd 1. What could be the difference in giving up a rnd 1 pick for one of the top stud TE’s in the game, knowing what you will be getting, than drafting a “so-called” stud TE in Pettigrew.
As much as I dont like giving up a round 1 pick for a TE, I would be ok with this move. Is it bold? Yes. Would it help now? Yes.
The biggest reason I make the arguments to not draft a TE in round 1 is basically because of the “bust” factor and giving up that round 1 money that you would be out with getting no production from them.
With the rumor of maybe landing a TE like Daniels, it would only make sense and it should make the Bills fans happy.
He’s a proven seam-buster, great hands and good blocker. “Proven” against NFL talent.
This, in my opinion, would be a good move.
Nobody here wants to take Pettigrew in the first round. Literally not a single poster. We are just acknowledging that it is something that OBD will probably consider.
On the other post we were saying "wouldn't be shocked" not "let's take him now!!"

I wouldn’t be averse to taking Pettigrew in the first, I’m just not sold on him at #11. So you’re half right, I think.
And you can bet your bottom dollar that OBD is considering it.

Yeah, I meant with the 11th pick. That pick is what it would take to get Daniels if/when Houston tenders him that high and that was what I was refering to.
Gotcha. I’m a bit surprised at this rumor, actually – Daniels is kind of in the mold of our current tight ends, though obviously he’s a much better receiving option. I honestly thought they’d target someone different, whether that meant a Pettigrew-type or an athlete.

I’m not surprised because Daniels is by far the best TE who is “available” this offseason whether it be the draft of FA. Once Houston tags him with the first rounder I would expect any interest Buffalo has in him to go away. Buffalo seems like the kind of organization that spends/wastes time going over every possible circumstance (at least for offseason stuff) even if they are very unlikely. They have probably spent time scouting Haynesworth and Peppers even though they never had a chance and they have probably been keeping an eye on Aaron Curry just in case. At least that is the vibe I get.
If I am any front office...
I am scouting every available option. Haynesworth, Curry, Peppers, anyone. Not being prepared is the only mistake they can make in my book.

I agree, but the question is how much time do you spend on that? Do you spend as many resources scouting Curry as you would Brown, Orakpo and Maybin?
Good question.
I would assume yes. You must be prepared if a guy falls in the draft. With that being said you may not have had the interview at the combine with a Curry that you did with a Brown, but you still put in a lot of hours. They have so many scouts and personnel guys on staff that someone is at almost every pro day to watch these guys and they have all the combine info. The only thing they don’t have is the face-to-face time with each guy.
As for the free agents, I think they spend time on everybody. I really hope they do. That’s what they get paid for. We here at Rumblings do it and don’t get paid for it.

I have voiced in favor of Pettigrew
If Everette Brown is gone, I have no problem with Pettigrew. I would prefer to not take him at 11, but OBD has been none to reach for a player.
How many years can we go without making the playoffs...eventually the odds go in your favor.........right?!?!?
My point was that taking Pettigrew 11th overall is nobody’s favorite likely outcome. I am actually something of a Pettigrew fan and think he is a Marcedes Lewis clone and would love to draft him in the 20s if we were to trade back, but there are easily 6 or 7 players I would grab before him.
only 6 or 7 players before pettigrew?
Wow is all I can say. There has got to be about 32 players out there better than Pettigrew in my opinion. He just is not a first round talent. I think he is seriously overrated.
stats look good
But not if they are going to give up a first and pay him a boat load, which might be necessary.

definitely
I actually called one of his fumbles this, I think it was in or near the end zone on a big drive (forget what game). I almost hate him on the field. The only thing worse, and unfortunately I;ve ssen it, is JP throwing him passes. It makes me sick
The Bills CAN win every game
As long as its not a first round tender.....
Im all for this.

with
Pettigrew running a 4.87 today, he didn’t help his draft stock…..
Dainels would be a nice player. Jared Cook is the combine warrior I thought he would be back in Novemeber when I saw him play….But Beckum and Casey were sensational and both jacked up their draft stock today. Casey is a guy I’m starting to fall in love with
MARVelous
I like Cook a lot
I bet he goes in the second before we pick, and Beckum will be gone in third before we pick. Casey would be a great 3rd round pick
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.
In this article
did you notice it said Buffalo was changing their logo for the 2009 season? For our 50th season. This is the first I have heard about this.
It's a fanshot....
I posted it this morning…. “big press conference Monday” They’re gonna do an all-time bills team, etc.

I would love this...
It would be the first time we’ve had a solid TE in a long time, BUT I just don’t see it happening. There is now way the Texans let this guy go. The only way it may work is if we work out some sort of trade. I’d be willing to give up anything besides a first rounder.
Don't forget to pay the troll toll...
Hmmmm
I’m sure that the Texans would have done this anyway, but wouldn’t hearing about other teams interest in Daniels all but guarantee they slap him with the highest tender available?
There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?
Maybe...
It could be that the Texans value a 1st or 2nd round pick more than Daniels. If, for some reason, the Texans only tag him with the 2nd round tender I’d see that as them hoping that he got poached. If they sign him with the 1st round tender (or 1st and 3rd) then they don’t want him going anywhere.
I, for one, would be appalled if Buffalo had to give up a 1st rounder for Daniels.
Remember a few years ago...
NE traded a 2nd rounder to Miami for Welker.

2nd for Daniels is a do it now move for the Bills
That would allow them at #11 to either take the biggest need player, go BPA, or trade back if a QB, or top 5 OT falls to them.
I told the witch doctor that I was in love with the Buffalo Bills, and instead of telling me to say "Oh eeh oh oh ah, ting tang walla walla wing bang" in order to make me feel better he told me to buy a gun and end it.
I’d go for a 2nd rounder, and then trade back from #11—mid 20s and second rounder.
by Ron From NM on Feb 22, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
exactly, I prefer the trade back myself, but if we got say Brown @ 11
and got Daniels for a #2? AND if we got a decent FA C, that would be a killer day/offseason for us.

RFA deadline
According to Chris Brown at buffalobills.com the deadline for tendering RFAs is 2/26. He doesn’t list a time but I’m guessing it is 4 pm EST. I haven’t seen any stories that said that Daniels had been tendered yet. Chris Brown (on 2/13) doesn’t think Buffalo would sign Daniels if the Texans put the 1st rounder or 2nd rounder tenders on him.
I can’t see Buffalo giving up a 1st round pick for Daniels. I could almost see the Bills giving up a 2nd round pick. If the plan was to drop back from #11 and (say, with Philly) and pick up a C and second tier DE then giving up a 2nd for an established TE like Daniels might not be a bad idea at all. Staying put at #11, however, would then be a disaster. Buffalo simply must have a minimum of two picks in the first two rounds—or get no real help at all at DE and/or C.
Unless they sign a Center...
which I am thinking is more and more likely. Specifically, Birk.

I saw a story (PFT?) that said Birk was thinking about re-upping with Minny. While I’ve said all along that I don’t care how Buffalo fixes the center position (so long as it is genuinely fixed), more and more it looks like the draft is the way to go.
1. Several centers are capable of stepping in and starting from day 1.
2. It would seem Buffalo will get a center no earlier than the late 20s and more likely in the 2nd round so it won’t take that #11 pick to get one of the better centers.
3. A 2nd or (gulp) 3rd round draft pick wouldn’t be expensive to sign—even a late first rounder wouldn’t cost as much as many free agent options.
4. A drafted center would provide at least 4 years of stability.
