Oh. My. God.

Chris Brown just put up a story about McCargo on buffalobills.com in which Modrak talked up....McCargo:

“He still has the physical talent,” he said. ”It’s not like he became an old man overnight. He’s still quick, he still has the talent. Like all of us he’s got to do it, I’ve got to do it and it’s an important time for him.”

We had all written McCargo off. Apparently, Modrak is at least implying that the departure of Bill Kollar opens the door for McCargo to get a fresh start. Could this be part of a ploy to generate some trade interest in McCargo? Could it be simple refusal to give up on a first round pick? Could it be delusional optimism?

With the number of holes the Bills need to fill, might the team hang onto McCargo?

Is this really that crazy?

I have been saying all along that it makes the most sense for Buffalo to keep McCargo as the 4th DT on the roster. He is pretty cheap and has the upside to be able to really step up huge if needed.

I think this was just an attempt by the front office to patch over anything they could because there is a good chance that McCargo is the 4th DT this year.

As McCargo's trade value is ZERO

We might as well wait and see if his back gets better and by extension his play.

yep

i don’t see what the hell they are doing…if McCargo is back its just the stubborness of modrak and co. not giving up on McCargo/Whitner debacle of 2006

How is it stubborness to hold onto a player still under contract to be your 4th DT? Look at other teams’ 4th DTs and tell me McCargo at his worst isn’t better then some of them? He still has potential left, at least enough to be brought back into training camp and given an opportunity to make the team.

TEN – Kevin Vickerson
ATL – Jason Jefferson
CIN – Jason Shirley
CAR – J’Vonne Parker / Nick Hayden
CHI – Matt Toeaina
NYG – Jeremy Clark
I don’t feel like looking up any more, but you get the point.

Buffalo isn’t going to do better than McCargo unless they invest in a mediocre vet (who would cost 2-4 mil per season) or spend a fairly early draft pick (4th round at the latest) this year. What is so revolting about bringing back a guy who most of this blog thought should’ve been the starter at this time last year?

I can't see McCargo coming back....

They tried to trade him halfway through the season. He’s making $1.5M if I remember right. They are going to try and trade him again. He was inactive for so many games.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him come back and prove he belongs, though.

Nice reference to RHPS, Ron.

RHPS?

It must have been an unintentional reference. I drew inspiration from PFTs: Ho. Le. Crap.

I doubt its to increase trade value

We all know you can never patch all the holes on the team. To me it sounds like the team has evaluated their defensive needs for 2009 and they’ve decided they may have to live with the talent they have at DT. I’m sure he will have some competition come training camp, maybe from a later round draft pick if the board falls that way, but I wouldn’t expect BJ Raji to be picked at 11.

Stranger things have happened

It’s really all up to McCargo himself. Has the light turned on? His problem is mainly motivation and if he can motivate himself he could contribute. I hope he finds the key. We’ll see come camp time. If he reports in shape all the better for us. I hope he does. We can use him. Agree this sounds like we are not getting a DT in the draft.

Bob Sanders

Bob Sanders (new DL coach) isn’t a yelling screaming kind of coach, compared to Kollar. Maybe he can get to McCargo in ways Kollar couldn’t. Sometimes a player just needs the right coach.

by south123 on Feb 21, 2009 9:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m increasingly wondering if the real problem on the d-line has been Kollar, not the players. I’m also wondering if Kollar was pushed out. Jauron never likes to humiliate members of his staff by firing them outright (see Fairchild, Steve), so he makes it clear that they need to seek jobs elsewhere. That seems to be what happened with Kollar. The big question now is how much improvement Sanders will make. It could be a lot.

Well Kollar got a promotion

so that argument may be moot.

Going from NFL offensive coordinator to head coach at your D1 alma mater is considered a step up by many people as well.

by kaisertown on Feb 21, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but there seems to be a pattern of underperforming coaches under Jauron who hit the job market at a time when it would appear he might want to get rid of them. I’m also not sure that going to Fort Collins instead of being an OC in the NFL is really a step up. Colorado State is not Notre Dame. More like a lateral move in my view.

by Macktruck on Feb 22, 2009 1:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

for you it's lateral.

For Fairchild it’s his dream job,. He’s working at his alma mater. Heck they won a bowl game this year!!!!

I agree with your assessment that underperforming Bills coaches may find their way to the job market but in both cases the guys moved up. It may be a coincidence or a gentle nudge.

And Fairchild took that job like 3/4s of the way through the season and I doubt Jauron was already telling him he was fired after the year. Maybe Fairchild felt like he might be on the way out anyways, but it would be stupid for an organization to give a coordinator reason to work less hard by telling him he is a goner after the year.

Why is this post titled "Oh. My. God."?

I was expecting to read something surprising, breaking news, or something.

I was just floored when I read the story on Buffalobills.com given that the team tried to trade McCargo away during the year. Add in that he was a healthy scratch (if he hadn’t been healthy the Bills couldn’t have tried to trade him) for several games and the writing was on the wall.

Now, on the cusp of free agency OBD is talking up a guy who, to this point, has been a bust. This could mean that Buffalo won’t even be looking at DT in free agency—not that many of us (besides those dreaming wistfully of Haynesworth) had been thinking about free agent DTs either. It might also mean that those hoping for Raji or Brace might be hoping in vain….if OBD is indeed going to give McCargo another shot.

I find it amazing.

Gut feeling, but I think McCargo is in this team’s plans. I think that he’ll be motivated (he’s got to be) and I think this Bob Sanders dude is going to try to get the most out of him. I actually think there’s a very good chance of McCargo returning, and maybe even contributing again.

I expect nothing

McCargo showed some flashes in 07, but nothing in 08. He is cheap and under contract. He remains the 4th DT until say the bills pick up Raji or Perry (is that his name). If OBD doesn’t get the guy they like in the draft, then its simple. Keep McCargo. He does have all the tools, just no motivation.

This is classic management……never sell yourself short.

Eric Moulds

The light didn’t go on for Eric until his third or fourth year. He’s under contract, hopefully he’s healthy, let’s see if his light suddenly goes . Just imagine if he finally lives up to his potential.

Reference:

I looked up McCargo’s contract. I don’t think he had a signing bonus so there would be no cap hit for releasing him or trading him.

I was just going to post about the second year of that contract so I’m glad you brought it up. It shows how stupid it would be to not give McCargo a chance to prove himself this year in OTAs, camp and the preseason. What if he does start to show some signs that he is motivated and in shape? He doesn’t have to do a great job to be a good 4th DT. If he proves he can do it, you end up with a really cheap DT for two seasons and one who has the upside to contribute a little bit as a rotational DT if he can get his act together.

Money-wise there’s no need to dump him. I was just stunned to see OBD embrace a guy they tried to cast off earlier in the season.

No need to dump him

At those numbers, OBD has nothing to lose by keeping this guy other than maybe forcing the team to carry a 5th DT just in case. Dare I say, if we add a DE in the draft we may actually keep 5 DE and 4 DT’s in case McCargo doesnt perform.

Because of the Injury and lack of production in the DE last yr I dont see OBD has the luxury to inactivate a player on the DL this coming yr.

With Schobel on IR last year...

they still put McCargo on it towards the end of the year.

We kept 5 DEs and 4 DTs last year. I don’t see how that would be surprising. Considering the Bills will have Schobel, Ellis and either Denney or Kelsay still on the roster all they have to do is draft 2 DEs or sign one in FA and draft one and they will definitely carry 5 DEs and 4 DTs next season.

Good bye John

McCargo lacks drive, intensity and heart. None of them can be “coached.”

by jpheff on Feb 22, 2009 10:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No, but they can be bought.

Consider how many average players put up monster years the season before they hit the free agent market. Yes, they usually turn back into pumpkins right after they sign their enormous contracts.

by Ron From NM on Feb 23, 2009 8:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Keeping or Trading

I think it has to be both. From what happened with the failed trade last season, I don’t see McCargo can be here; OBD doesn’t want him to be here. But he is very little trade value at this moment, so what do you do? Waive him outright? Or, talk him up, give him a pat on the back so that hopefully he can perform better during the season to increase his trade value. And, as kaisertown said, he’s ok as a 4th DT. But honestly, I think the relationship between McCargo and the team has gone so bad that I don’t think OBD wants to keep him as a permanent 4th DT.
