Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Quick Hypothetical

Tomorrow we're going to see the top 3 DE's on the board (Brown, Orakpo, Maybin) show their stuff, both at DE and LB. Chances are that one of those three will be on the board for us at 11. Theres no indication that I've seen (except for the pleas from this board) to cut Kelsay or Denney, so presumedly they will here next year. How would you feel about drafting one of those top 3 to play Sam LB?

Advantages:

1. We significantly upgrade our size and athleticism at the Sam position.

2. We add a player who could theoretically be extremely dangerous as a blitzer from a two point stance.

3. We can drop said player to the line on obvious passing downs.

4. It would compensate for the major perceived weakness of each of these players (i.e. size).

Obviously this is based on a whole lot of suppositions. It would require these folks to show both the athletic ability and the ability to transition to a brand new position, but it has been done.

Thoughts?

Brown/Maybin/Orakpo at SAM?
That seems like a pretty reasonable plan.

I don't think so. They won't be able to make that transition/they would be out of position.

Just to be clear

I’d imagine the starting lineup to be:

LE: Denney
UT: Williams
NT: Stroud
RE: Schobel

SLB: Brown/Maybin/Orakpo
MLB: Posluszny
WLB: Mitchell

From what others who know more on here seem to say

This goes against these draftees strengths (pass rush), and would possibly magnify their weaknesses (coverage).
I also think there is some good true LBs in the draft, if we chose to go that route.
And, as some have also said, our size at LB, if crowell comes back, or almost anyone replaces Ellison, is more than sufficient.
I think, no matter what anyone else does say, that this is a poor move.
However, if we changed things up with some 3-4 looks, you could conceviably have two “DEs” on one edge providing a rush, which I d think would be interesting

All good points. i think that what folks are primarily concerned about is the concept that we’re getting away from what these guys do best (i.e rushing the passer). My counter argument is that we’re not going to be getting away from it as much as you think we will.

The first thing is, this would put a lot more pressure on the O-line to identify and properly account for rushers. Ellison scares no one. Crowell, should he come back, is a step up but still not upper echelon. It would give the Bills two high quality rush talents from the LB position (along w/Mitchell). The more multiple we are in our looks, the more confusion we can create and the more free men we will get to the QB.

Also, we send our D line out in coverage frequently. Just because Brown/Maybin/Orakpo has his hand on the ground at the start means he’s going after the QB.

Third, we would again be subbing them to the line in obvious passing situations/third downs and say, 4 or more. I suspect that between all of that, our potential pick would be rushing the QB very frequently, and from a wide variety of angles.

Not in our scheme. These guys have all played their careers with their hand on the ground. Moving them to a standing read and react position isn’t the best idea. I’d rather have them work on their pass rushing techniques and run support….

Scheme...

…is what worries me about this idea. Again I’m not saying that this is a probable scenario, based on the factors involved, but I think that there’s something to be said for re-thinking the way we’re thinking about players/schemes/etc… My argument against you I suppose, is that Fewell has shown a willingness to move personnel around to try and get them into the most advantageous position, and I suspect he would do the same with any of players. Let’s not forgot that he’s tried a lot of looks/packages in his time here, but often been hamstrung by personnel/injuries.

That said, I think at the end of the day, both Brown and Maybin will playing 4-3 REs and Orakpo will be outside in a 3-4 scheme.

suppositions

Word of the day. Nice work.

+I like the ‘thinking outside the box.’

I guess if the draftee played LB and DE, he would be ‘inside the box.’

They have never been asked to cover before and you're making them move?

There are plenty of great OLB prospects. If you are gonna draft an OLB draft someone who has played the position and can help immediately.

Lots of teams will potentially ask them to move

And its not that these guys haven’t played any coverage. They used a lot of zone blitz last year at Penn St, and Maybin was fairly frequently in coverage. I don’t necessarily think its the case where they wouldn’t help immediately either.

Let’s think about the scenario in which they’d be brought in. All of these guys look to be candidates for RE, a position at which we still have Schobel (and he will be the starter) and where we also drafted a kid last year. Essentially that leaves the bulk of the playing time coming in two ways: As either a LE or as a situational pass rusher/rotation guy.

If you’re asking them to play LE, you’re asking them to take on a larger, road grating RT, and more frequently have to deal with double teams. Can it be done with an undersized guy? Sure, Robert Mathis has done it. But then, playing the run has never been a strong suit of his. And whatever you think of Kelsay and Denney, they play the run fairly well.

If you’re asking them to be a rotational guy, then you just spent the 11th overall pick on a guy who will see the field 20 plays a game. This scenario could admittedly be worse (you can make a lot happen in 20 plays a game), but still, you’d like these guys to come in and start from day one at position that has been acknowledged as a weakness.

If your gonna take LB take a LB, if your gonna take DE take a DE

like some others have already stated there are several good LB’s in this draft, actually it is probably the deepest position in the draft. and at 11 we could take rey m. or cushing if we wanted a LB. However, i hope we do not go that route, the best way to shore up the LB position is through FA, by resigning cro preferrable but if not him then by adding another proven vet to play OLB. If we start the draft w/ a need to upgrade OLB, C, TE, and DE then i think that we set ourselves up for failure. Looking at FA i think C could be addressed and OLB. TE and DE are two areas that can only be upgraded through the draft after seeing who is available and knowing the history of the bills.

I think the main point that i’m trying to make is between C, LB, TE, and DE that at least one of these positions must be addressed before the draft.

I do agree however that we should draft one of the 3 that you mentioned, but to play DE not LB.

Assuming we take care of OLB in FA:

Round 1 – Orakpo, DE
Round 2 – Coffman/Cook TE (unless unger or Mack fall)
Round 3 – luigs/wood/Shipley (one will be there)

With this we would have a big time pass rushing DE, and a definate upgrade at both TE/C.

There is simply no way that these guys can be every down (or even first and second down) linebackers in a scheme that doesn’t ask them to blitz constantly. I shouldn’t even have to explain why some 250 pound players who have played with a hand on the gound their entire football lives shouldn’t be moved to an outside LB spot in a 4-3 defense.

That said, I really like the idea of drafting a DE who specializes at getting to the passer and lining them up at a number of spots. Lining up a Maybin type player at any of the linebacker spots 4-5 times a game and having them blitz 80% of the time and show blitz, but drop into coverage the rest of the time could be a great way to give the offense something extra to think about and put as much pass rushing talent on the field as possible.
