My perfect FA & Draft
Now that we know who is officially tagged, I am ready to unveil my FA & Draft approach.
As many of you know, I've been pushing the Alex Mack for president campaign for a few months now, primarily because I would love to see the bills get back to a power run game with more play-action. I still remain convinced that Mack is going to be something special but the depth at the position in this year's draft (Mack/Wood/Unger) as well as the availability of quite a few good FAs (Brown/Birk/Saturday) has finally made me change my mind on the subject.
Here we go:
FREE AGENCY:
Target #1: Jason Brown from the Ravens. He is huge & powerfull and could stand-up against the big NTs of the AFC East. The bonus is that he is young so we wouldn't need to draft a center at all. If not, Birk or Saturday would both be good options but I'd like to see us draft a Center anyway because these guys in the twilight of their careers.
Target #2: Kalimba Edwards from Oakland. He would be an upgrade from Kelsay. He played for DJ and would not be expensive. We used a 3rd round pick last year on Ellis and I have to think that he will be more of a factor this year - actually he needs to be!
Target #3: Sean Jones or Gibril Wilson (released from Oakland). Either one of those guys would be a big improvement at safety. With Jones, I'd keep Whitner at FS. With Wilson, I'd use Whitner at SS. This target is wishful thinking I know but it's still fun to dream a bit. I wouldn't be surprized if Wilson comes relatively cheap.
Target #4: Fred Taylor. Suffice to say that I agree with bringing him in. I think they need to extend Freddy but bringing in Taylor cannot hurt. He still has good mileage left in his tank and he could be a great leader on the offensive side.
Target #5: Joey Harrington. A similar QB as trent (big pocket passer, cerebral) with a lot of starting experience. A huge upgrade over JP. He won't create a controversy. He won't be expensive.
DRAFT:
Round 1 (#11): Rey Maualuga. There is no question about it, this guy is something special at MLB. He comes from a similar system as what we run. I know many have said that the Bills drafted Poz for the Mike position but he would be great at SLB and Rey would be an upgrade from Poz at the Mike. We would have an awesome Linebacking core for many years to come!
Plan B: If Rey is not there, I'd prefer to trade down and get Pettigrew. This guy is the complete package. I was very keen on getting a TE that can stretch the field but this guy doesn't need to, he is incredible at shielding the ball and getting open and his hands are incredible (he reminds me a lot of Tony Gonzales). What I have come to realize is that it's way better to have a TE that is in on every play, makes deception a lot easier. Given my obsession for the power run game, this guy would be perfect.
Note: If Aaron Curry slips to us at #11, I'd pounce on him without a blink. Then we keep Poz where and Curry at SLB.
Round 2 (#42): Brian Robiskie. I will probably get kicked out of this blog for suggesting a WR at this spot but this kid is NFL ready! He will be a great possession receiver in the NFL, he reminds me a lot of Keyshawn Johnson. This guy comes in and day 1 - takes pressure off of Lee. As much as I like Steve Johnson, he is more of a long shot, Robiskie is blue chip stock.
If we traded down in round 1: I would use our second Round 2 pick on Clay Mathews or Clint Sintim (OLB) if they drop to us otherwise I'd go for Robert Ayers (DE).
Round 3: Eric Wood (C). As much as I like Alex Mack, I think we better our team even more by getting the guys I mentioned above. So hopefully we signed a FA center and if it was one of the two older guys, then we still need a Center. Eric Wood has impressed me, especially his mean streak in the run blocking.
If we are lucky enough to win the Jason Brown Sweepstakes then we can use our 3rd round pick to add depth on the D-line by adding a guy like Terrance Taylor. A very athletic 320lbs mammoth of a player.
Round 4: Nelson/Cook/Casey (TE). Obviously if we traded down in round 1 and got Pettigrew then I'd use the 4th round to draft for depth at LB.
Round 5: Quinn Johnson. But judging by Turk's comments, I guess I can kiss that dream goodbye!
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I don’t think we’ll be nearly that active in FA, unfortunately. 1 starter, hopefully, would be nice. I think we’ll retain more of our crappy FA’s that bring in depth from other teams.
If we could get Brown and Jones/Wilson, I would be stunned and absolutely thrilled.
As for you draft, eh, I’m not a huge fan of it. I don’t like Maualuga in our scheme and I really don’t like Poz at OLB. Why does everyone keep talking about him as a potential great OLB? I just don’t see it. He’s not very quick and I think that would be his biggest issue. I think MLB is his best position in the pros.
I really don’t like Robiskie, especially in the 2nd round. I don’t think he has as much upside as many of the WR’s in this draft. I like the idea of a WR as I’ve mentioned many times before with Kenny Britt, but I just don’t like Robiskie, unless it’s later in the draft.
You aren’t going to find any of those TE’s anywhere near the 4th round. They are all 2nd rounders with Casey maybe slipping to the 3rd. I’d look at Cornelius Ingram in round 3 instead of Wood since you signed Jason Brown already. There’s no need for Wood, we can get a C prospect that isn’t ready to play later in the draft.
Why didn’t you draft a pass rusher? Kalimba Edwards isn’t going to do much to improve us there. It’s like upgrading from a Fiat Strada to a Yugo. Ick and ick.
I would never take a FB before the 6th round. That’s just me. I like Johnson though, but I can’t see him being taken before the late 6th.

"I’m Kurupt with Buffalo Rumblings. I am worth hundreds!"
K, I would only draft Wood if you don’t pickup brown. If we get brown, I was going DT with Terrance Taylor.
I wanted a pass rusher but had to make a choice. I find that there aren’t many real 4-3 DEs in the draft and I am affraid that guys like Maybin/Brown are too light to anchor against the run. We drafted Ellis to be a situational pass rusher. If there was an every down DE that can excel at both maybe but I don’t think there is any. I am not convinced of Orakpo. By the 3rd round there are no DE’s of real interest.

Some good stuff
I like your list of FAs, but would add WR to it. I like Rey, but don’t think OBD will be moving Poz, at least this year anyways. I love the idea of bringing in a FB like Johnson, but 5th round is high. Take Johnson or Tony F in the 6th. Terrance Taylor was some I had on my list as a 3-4th rounder, but he had a terrible Senior Bowl and his draft stock is dropping like a stone. You can get him in round 6-7, right now anyway. Wood and the TEs you list would be un-bill-ievable value picks, which is why they won’t be there Wood will be gone by the end of the second round for sure. I like Robiskie’s combine so far, but don’t get caught up in all the hype. Go back and look at game tape. If you still like him, stick with him. I am on the vet WR bandwagon. We have some good young talent that I want to see develop/not develop before we use a high pick on a WR (soooo many other holes). Especially with TE on the list this season, I would be shocked if we drafted another WR with picks 1-4.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
Tks Bud
I agree that we need a WR which is why I had Robiskie. I have to tell you that I love that kid, he reminds me of Keyshawn which is a great complement to him. But as I posted earlier today, I think if OBD could look at a guy like Reggie Williams as a #2, it would be great cause then we could pickup Mack at #42 (And you know how I feel about big Mack)
I would love to see us trading down and getting Pettigrew. The more I think about it the more I am convinced. This guy is a road grater type blocker and an exceptional receiver to boot! Not only would he provide Trent with a 6’6" security blanket with a pterodactyl sized wingspan with velcro hands – - He would also be the bulldozer sealing the edge for outside runs.
Rd1: Pettigrew
Rd2a: Sintim/Mathews
Rd2b: Mack/Wood
Rd3a: Patrick Chung
Rd3b: Ayers

Before you get off the Mack train
Consider that picking up Jason Brown is going to cost a lot of money. Reportedly he is looking for a Faneca type deal around 8 to 9 mil a year. If that is the case I would much rather have the Bills jump into the Albert Haynesworth race and pay a little extra there, around 12 mil per year, and hope that Mack drops to us in the second. I actually think there is a good chance the Steelers go Unger or Robinson with their pick and let Mack drop to us. I would also be fine with Unger or Wood in the second instead of giving Brown so much money when if we are going to make that much noise we could be trying to buy Haynesworths services.
You have to draft a defensive end keysh, Kalimba Edwards is a situational pass rusher no more. With your plan we would be putting off addressing a huge problem for yet another year. I do think, like you, that Ellis will start contributing next year.
Like Kurupt pointed out, none of those tight ends will be there in round 4. Cook is going to be nasty and I would consider taking him in the second if the circumstances were right.
After watching him at the combine I think its time to start considering Pat White to be our back up if he’s there in the 4th round. His arm looked awesome, he impressed me more than Sanchez.
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.
I too like pat white a lot. We could have him play in the slot and be our QB3 but I prefer Robiskie and I seriously doubt that Robiskie makes it to the 3rd round. In my plan B, I have us trading down and taking Pettigrew then Robiskie & Mathews or Sintim.
Just imagine:
Pettigrew, Peters, Dock, Brown, Butler, Walker (Biggest & meanest O-Line in the league)
Lynch/Jackson/Taylor with Quinn Johnson in the backfield
Evans/Robiskie/Hardy with Reed/Johnson playing the slot
Schobel/Ellis, Stroud, Taylor, Edwards/Denney (With Taylor, Marcus could be let loose a bit more – collapsing the pocket more often)
Mitchell, Poz, Sintim
McKelvin, McGee, Youboty

A couple of thoughts…
- I don’t think they’ll go after Joey Harrington, because when Jauron took over for the fired Steve Mariucci at the end of 2005, he benched Harrington in favor of Jeff Garcia. I doubt there’s a strong enough connection there to justify bringing him in. Rex Grossman and Kyle Boller are much, much stronger candidates.
- The two safeties you list are too good to list as #3 targets. They’ll be gone once the first two items are knocked off your list.
- I don’t like your draft scenario for two reasons – Wood isn’t going to last until the third, and the Bills won’t take a wide receiver unless it’s in the later rounds of the draft. I do like the logic behind the Maualuga pick, though. His Cover 2 experience is going to be a huge selling point for this coaching staff.
Other than that, it’s good work. Good, sound logic behind most of it, and it’s got a degree of realism that most of these “plans” don’t have. Good work!

God please not Grossman!
I hadn’t thought of the Jauron/Harrington connection – makes sense, you might be right on that one! I like Boller and Batch would also be a good option. Grossman sucks and there is too much potential for controversy (not that anyone except himself would want him as a starter)
I realized that we need another WR other than Evans that can stretch the field and take pressure off of Lee and Robiskie is the real thing so I got caught up a bit. I really would not be disappointed if they took him but you are right that they probably won’t because of the two young guys in the shadows (Johnson & Hardy). Reggie Williams is a UFA worth pursuing. I think he is basically a #2 receiver and could thrive in Buffalo where Evans gets all the attention. At 6’4" 212lbs he would be a great target for Trent. I could easily see us with Evans/Williams with Johnson/Reed in the slot. I wonder how cheap Williams will go for? If the Bills target a WR in FA, then we could pickup Mack at #42, which would make my day big time! I could see a scenario where we get brown and still draft mack and then have an option to let Dock go by next year to save some cap space.

Letting Dock go doesn't save a whole lot of cap space since his signing bonus was so big.
The cap hit is pretty large. plus as of right now there is no cap next year.

We’ve heard OBD has been sniffing around Maualuga so that pick would not surprise me. If Orakpo is gone before we pick and we don’t trade down, he could very well be our pick. After listening to the coaches interviews I’m thinking they will not want either Brown or Maybin. So as of now I’d put my chips on Orakpo or Maualuga if we stay at 11.
Your scenario works best if we trade down. Obviously we don’t get Maualuga but do get Robiskie or Britt. That would work. We seem to be in no man’s land regarding Mack. But after watching Wood I can see why Brian says he and Mack are rated about even. And Unger is close behind. If we want a top flite center we must get one in the second round. I’m not very high on short armed Shipley.
Also after the coaches interviews OBD will want an every down TE. Daniels, Pettigrew and Nelson fit that bill. So a trade down and taking Pettigrew is looking like another doeable plan. I think Brian said that the interviews suggest we will focus on offense this year, especially in the draft. Agree. With that said, if Jason Brown becomes available, he is free agent target #1. Saturday is #2. A vet center in free agency really opens up our draft possibilities.
What I wonder about is if OBD trades down and takes Pettigrew, then what do they do about DE other than Kalimba? He should go cheap but we are still weak there.
I like your overall scenario. We sure would look different on offense next year!
everything goes better with a BIG MACK
After listening to the coaches interviews I’m thinking they will not want either Brown or Maybin.
I thought Fewell said he liked Brown the other day? I think Curry/Brown/Orakpo/Manguala are the top four in that order.

One thing you’ll learn about the Bills is that they generally grade every player, but don’t necessarily put guys that will obviously be gone on their board. I doubt Curry gets a listing. He’s a Top 5 pick.
Orakpo, Brown, Maualuga, Maybin, Pettigrew. That’s how I think their board would shake out today if the draft were tomorrow.

I am not convinced
that they are looking to spend an 11th pick overall on a situational guy. I hope that I am right.

You shouldn’t be convinced. But you shouldn’t be convinced that they won’t, either. It’s way too early in the game to form concrete opinions on that.

So if Curry is there at 11 they won't draft him?
I’m just saying he should be on the list at least…

And I’m just saying it’s 100% that he won’t be there. Dude just ran a 4.54. No way he falls to 11, and that’s one draft prediction I feel comfortable making in February.

Robiskie is definitely helping himself every day since the Senior Bowl
This kid is for real! I doubt he drops beyond the second round. After a discussion with Brian, I agree that we’d be better off looking at a veteran receiver in FA, maybe someone like Reggie Williams. A guy that could come in right away and make an impact. Reggie could be a great #2 receiver taking pressure off of Lee and at his size, would be a great red-zone target.
This scenario would suit me fine as I would like to get Alex Mack in round 2.

remember the WR drop last year
All the Mocks had 4 being taken in Rd 1 and only 1 went. This year only Maclin and Crabtree are Rd 1 worthy and heads above the others – so Rd 3 and Day 2 is where alot of WRs will go.
None went in the first round actually
