I usually like Mark Gaughan's work
But today, I think he wrote something dumb.
This was/is taken from his article regarding the Fred Taylor visit today.
"However, the move could have bigger implications, too. The Bills have a quality backup in Fred Jackson. It may be hard to convince Taylor to join Buffalo if he thinks he's going to be the third wheel in the Bills' backfield. If the Bills were to convince Taylor to sign, it could trigger an attempt to trade (Marshawn) Lynch."
Really Mark? You're going to fan the flames for a Lynch trade? Lynch is not going anywhere. He'll be given one more chance.
The Taylor visit is nothing more than a courtesy to a man Jauron allegedly respects. That's all it is; nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with your sentiment on Lynch, but don’t count your chickens on this Taylor visit. There’s a mutual respect between he and Jauron. Don’t be shocked if something gets done.
Can you imagine the type of influence Taylor would have on Lynch? I mean, Taylor was a great influence on Jones-Drew… it’s just a thought. They might be looking for a babysitter for Lynch; might as well get one that can play, right?

Yeah, they can compare arrest notes and stories!
Is Taylor really the mentor type?

There’s kind of a double standard here. Lynch gets arrested twice and he’s suddenly Pac-Man Jones, but if Taylor is arrested once, he’s still a mentor.
Bottom line is that Taylor is a well-respected veteran, and he’d be a good influence on Lynch, arrest or not. If we can say “lay off Marshawn”, we can say “lay off Taylor”.

Taylor can still play
But he’s not signing here as a #3 when he has a chance to start in New England.
And I’ll play devil’s advocate…why wouldn’t the Bills at least listen to offers for Lynch? I love Lynch as a player, but maybe, and I realize how foolish this sounds, maybe the Bills know more about Lynch than we do. The next time he screws up, we could lose him for 8 games or more. Can we afford that?
I've been feeling Buffalo ill.

Because he's the only player on the team that is marketable.
I’m sure they’ll listen to overwhelming deals but he’s not going anywhere. He’s the only player on the team with a national presence and will be for a long time. No one in Buffalo cared about him hitting that girl after he started hitting opponents and it will be the same thing again this year.

Gaughn was alos talking WRs
And he said Calvin Johnson was the #1 overall pick in 2007, but f course he wasn’t, he was the 2nd overall pick. And while that might be nit-picking, he gets paid very well, while the guys on heir like Brian and Kurupt would at least have the decency to do the right research for an article they are to post, and they do it for free!
Now, maybe thats a bit much, but i noticed it today and was pretty pissed that he is paid to miswrite facts

I’m sure it’s just a mistake, or poor editing. He could at least fix it like we would!!! Or apologize!

Sure
And its an easy thing to look up. In fact, looking back, the Raiders, who i believe took Jamarcus Russell number one that year, should have taken Calvin Johnson and grabbed a QB in a later round…and as bad as this might sound, they could have gotten Trent. Oh well…who cares. Then Detroit might have had Russell, and both teams might still suck, or who knows, and again, who cares

Thoughts
The Bills wouldn’t be wasting Fred Taylor’s time just to catch up. There’s definitely going to be genuine interest in his services.
That being said, i’m not convinced anyone, let alone Fred Taylor would have an influence on Lynch – seeing how he totally ignored the commish’s comments and suggestions once.
I think if they were going to trade him, it would have to be now, or just following the coming season. If he gets a 3rd incident, and an 8-game suspension (or worse), his value is nil to the Bills. He’s a great player, with on-field heart matched by few. He’s also a RB, where it’s easier to replace talent.
In this situation with Lynch, no assumption is safe.

If they are serious about Taylor then what does this say about Jackson’s ability to land the multi-year deal that he covets? Taylor will probably still want at least $3MM (was to count $6MM against Jax’s cap this year) I would think. would OBD pay Taylor that kind of money and still sign Jackson or would OBD tender an offer to Jackson and deal with the potential fallout from there?

Taylor is not going to get 3M. I stand by the $1.5M/per assumption.

Another thought
IF Larry Johnson finds himself without a home, he could also be someone the Bills court – should the situation with Marshy get mushy.

I know. He’s got a problem keeping his hands and spit to himself. I don’t like him, but I could see the interest in him as a player – if the worst came to light with Lynch.

I think the Bills staff
feels that the team is so young, bringing in guys that can get on the field, have been there before, are professional maybe would rub off on the younger guys. Stroud, Fred Taylor, an Owen Daniels, Kawika Mitchell…..maybe an influx of experience on offense will help out this Bills team

Lynch trade
Don’t be too sure about Lynch being given another chance. He has proven to everyone that he has no character (hit/run) and that he is plain dumb and thoughtless (hit/run—gun) how many more chances does one need? Everyone deserves one but in this case two???Not to sure about that.

Looks like we better cut Hardy...
and cut all ties with Bruce Smith, he of the 2 DUI arrests and a dalliance with the white girl that led to a 4 game suspension.

I agree wit hyou Bob - but
the Bills cannot afford to let go of Lynch UNLESS they are trading him to Philly for both of their draft picks in round one AND signing Taylor. Personally, I don’t see any of this happening. Marshawn needs a BODYGUARD and a BABYSITTER. One to drive him around and the other to keep him away from the guns and the green.

The thing that makes me question a Taylor signing is that the Bills routinely only dressed 2 RBs a game last year. I guess now that I think about it, bringing Taylor in isn’t a precursor to a Lynch trade. It’s a precursor to a long Lynch suspension maybe?
by krytime on Feb 24, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Lynch isn't going to have a long suspension though.
He will get 1-4 games, my guess is 2. His first offense was a traffic violation guys. It wasn’t a felony or even a misdomenor.

2 games was my first guess, but I’m starting to think different now. It’s been about a week and a half, and we haven’t heard really anything from the league or the Bills. It makes me nervous a little, and I start to think the worst. It’s kind of like how the silence of kids playing in a different room makes you think something bad is going on.

nice anaolgy...
The league had some big fish to fry with the combine. That over now (or soon rather) and then we get into free agency which isn’t really a burden on the league office. Goodell has usually taken his time on handing out punishments. It will happen but it may take a little while. He won’t wait for the charges to be settled though. It will happen this offseason.

Just read this on an ESPN FA chat:
Q: I read Taylor was going to interview in Buff which could result in Lynch getting traded. Would that even be smart?
Matt Williamson: (1:58 PM ET ) Sorta. Lynch is a smidge overrated and also is getting into a lot of trouble off the field, which miht be all Buff needs to move him. Still, Fred T went to U of Flor and played at Jax-think he is going to be doing cartwheels to move to Buffalo?

Yes – EXTREMELY SMART.
Trade Lynch to Philly for #21 and a third. Then TRADE 11 to the Texans for Daniels. Use #21 to take Mack or a DE. Trade other 3rd and new 3rd for a 2nd and take a WR. Sign Taylor as the starter with Jackson as the backup and you no longer have a BLUNT problem in the backfield.
All of this = will never happen

Do the Eagles not already have Brian Westbrook? Why would they want Lynch?

Lynch and Westbrook are two completely different styles of runners and
Westbrook is getting a little old. With that said , I still think it will not happen.

Yeah it's extremely smart to trade your franchise running back.
Especially when you’re signing a guy with one or two years left in the tank. And then make sure you draft a WR with the new pick.

Ricky Williams was a franchise running back. Want him too ? Pac Man is available, should we call him????
If Lynch finally gets the point, then great. But, it would be really “smart” to for the Bills to get caught unprepared. We have Jackson and can pick up a FA or draft another backup.

So you are in favor of trading one of the two bright spots on our team then not even getting his replacement? That is not how to build a team. Fred Taylor is not Marshawn Lynch. Not now anyways. If we trade Marshawn you had better draft his replacement. I will not get on board trading Lynch.

I would be comfortable with Fred squared for this season with a possible late round pick.
Target RB next year. It is not like I would be in favor of giving Lynch away. We should be able to get a few picks for Lynch to fill other holes. Denver has proven that a good O-line is more important than who is carrying the rock.
