Veteran RB Taylor visits Bills
In case you missed it, former Jaguars RB Fred Taylor visited One Bills Drive today. The official site has some great quotes from the runner up; he seems like a very personable guy. It'll be interesting to see how active the Bills are in attempting to sign him to a deal. Taylor is scheduled to visit the New England Patriots next.
Veteran receiver and special teams ace Kelley Washington also visited the team today.

Anyone have any thoughts on Washington?
Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?

If he is a better special teamer than Jenkins and costs about the same then you might as well sign him. Other than that there isn’t really much to say.

i know of his special teams “prowess” – i should have been more specific as to say what he would bring to us as a #2 WR – because I didn’t see that out of him – granted i’m not a NE fan.
so we’re probably both thinking the same thing kaiser – move along – nothing to see here

Uh, I think he had something like 1 catch for 3 yards last year. He’s not here to be our #2 WR.

thats what i was thinking – just a special teams ace – nothing more – but didn’t know if someone had any “inside” info on the guy or something that i didn’t know.
thanks guys

Well he wasn’t drafted with the first pick in the third round to be a special teamer. The potential to help out as a receiver is there, but he hasn’t been able to find the field as a WR since the first couple years of his career. it’s tough to say if he has any talent as a receiver because nobody here has really seen him play as a WR.

the squirrel
He probably will compete for 3rd or 4th string WR but when we say that April is the best ST coach with that we have to understand that he commands some of the players himself. To be the best in something requires sacrifice and to keep our ST elite sometimes the Offense Defense have to sacrifice depth. That said I think there are alot worse players because every once in awhile this guy can make a catch. And if injuries plague our WR I’d rather have him than Justin Jenkins.

Same here
At least this guy shows some sort of future at WR, even if it is just a 4th stringer. And he is better than Jenkins on ST, so if he costs the same, i’d rather have him than Jenkins.

What an absolutely abyssmal soundbyte:
Link from Tim Graham’s write-up of the visit.
“I think the sky is the limit,” Taylor said. “It’s a great opportunity. We are in a recession, and I am jobless. So I have to make the most of every opportunity and try to say the right stuff. The people that I have met have been terrific.”
I am jobless…. hahaha. Why else would he come to Buffalo I guess?

Funny…how many people come to Buffalo for employment?

Any contract offer?? Probably not, we will just let him leave and sign with NE - AWESOME
The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.

Actually, there probably was an offer. But to expect the Bills to sign him before he leaves for New England is borderline ridiculous, considering it’s New England. It would have taken a catastrophically rich contract for him to cancel that trip.

I’m warming up to the Taylor idea some (which means it probably won’t happen).
Is it possible that the interest in Taylor here is not because the Bills are wary of a possible suspension, but because they are scared he’ll screw up again, and soon?
by krytime on Feb 24, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Possibly that, possibly just to get another veteran influence in the locker room? I’m warming up to it a bit too, which most likely means it’s a terrible idea.

Knowing our luck Taylor goes Pacman on us
Starts hanging out with Lynch at the “scrip clubs” and has him drinking Patron while driving down the street and hitting mailboxes with a baseball bat. Oh wait, or is that me I’m thinking of?
I told the witch doctor that I was in love with the Buffalo Bills, and instead of telling me to say "Oh eeh oh oh ah, ting tang walla walla wing bang" in order to make me feel better he told me to buy a gun and end it.

If Marshawn got arrested for that
I wouldn’t even be mad, that would almost be legendary a player getting suspended for mailbox smashing

And btw, who ever coined the phrase “Bong Mode”? I want to get a shirt that says that.

I used to be against him being a Bill, i just didn’t see it happening, but I’m warming up to the Idea too… heres hoping it does happen, for whatever reason they sign him.

This is why I posted "Sign Fred Taylor NOW" a few days ago and got blasted for the idea
It makes sense at the right price. I just think with the potential for injury and the need to have three competent backs that can be relied upon any time, it makes sense to have him. Plus since we aren’t going to have a fullback or the need for one anymore, we have room for an extra tailback. We’ll see what NE offers him.

When did anyone say we weren't going to have a fullback?
I fully expect one to be on the roster.

Our "expert" offensive coordinator said we didn't need a fullback
in his 15 minute long video interview… he also said that saving Time Outs don’t matter in the first half. He said about a half a dozen other things that P’d off the masses…

This is the time of year when everything is so fluid. I’d love to see Taylor in a Bills uni. But what is he looking for? It is his last contract. Too bad we still need to address our lines. He is a good man and a real credit to his profession. Wherever he goes I wish him the best. In the last two years we have tended to put all our eggs in the basket of two FA’s. So if I were on the inner circle I’d tell Fred to not make a hasty decision. We need to see what happens early in free agency but we like you. Stay tuned.

Taylor was drafted with a pick we gave up for Rob Johnson!
Boy we really screwed Jacksonville on that one, eh?
“My wife asked if they were going to fly me in first class. I just kinda laughed. They did.”
The fact that he said “They did” makes me laugh. I bet his wife would’ve believed him if he said he was coming into Buffalo on a Greyhound.

How would you feel about our defense lining up against New England with him in the backfield?
That’s a good measure of his value – does he scare you as an opponent. He didn’t do much against us when we played the Jags last fall. I could see him as a guy you plug in there once in awhile if Marshawn or Fred had to go to the locker room. I like him better than Omon, unless I’m missing something. Not sure D-III was a very good prep for X-man coming to the NFL.

I'm Scared of Taylor in a Pat's uniform
for us he’d be a 3rd guy that we occasionally plug in after Marshawn gets back from his suspension, but for the Pats he’d be a BIG weapon, pretty much taking all the handoffs that Lamont Jordon took for them last year. I’d hate to have to see him twice per year.

That's what I was thinking
No more than two, and some sort of incentive if he carries the ball over 200 times, which to me will never happen.
However, another question to pose is, do you think Jackson is a better runner than Taylor? I think I do, but in a reserve role, Taylor would be a change of pace I would not want ot see as an opposing defense. 5 touches a game at most, considering MArsahwn isn’t suspended would be about 80 carries, for about what…2-300 yds maybe? I don’t know, the more I write, the more I think it shouldn’t happen and is just another idea floated out there “just to see”. However, if Marshawn is suspended 4-8 games, than I think it would be a great idea.

I think Jackson is a better runner right now, though Taylor is still very useful for a team. I just like Freddie’s versatility so much, which is why this move would be questionable to me. If you sign Taylor, you are basically telling him that he’ll get his carries here. You have to do that. Well, once Marshawn returns from suspension (2-4 games in), are we going to be giving him 18-20 carries a game and Jackson and Taylor 5-8 each? I don’t think so.
The thing is, Marshawn isn’t going to be given his suspension until at lease July, and most likely early-mid August. There’s no way for us to know right now. Of course, the FO probably has a pretty reasonable idea, but they can’t be sure. If they think Marshawn is going to get a 6-8 game suspension and end up convincing Taylor to sign, and then find out in the summer that Lynch only got a 1-2 suspension, how is that going to sit with Taylor? How would that sit with Jackson and Lynch if Taylor ended up getting promised carries?
I’m not sure I see this situation ending well if Taylor were signed unless he was okay with getting no more than 75-100 carries for the season. I’d have to imagine he’d want an opportunity for more than that someone, and rightfully so….

Did Marshawn fail a drug test? No. So I don’t see how it’s an issue….at least until he fails one.

We’ll never know if he passed a drug test last year or not, unless he fails another one and gets suspended for it.
No, I’m just saying, but if you get pulled over and the cops find four blunts in your car, chances are it’s not the first time you are around weed.
I would have to kind of assume the NFL tested him after the hit and run last year. I know if I was the commish, I would have.

We shouldn't take him then
We would be better off with a speedster draft pick, or one of the countless other free agent runners out there. i dwouldn’t promise anyone anything, and Lynch is our work horse, and more realistically might get only a 2 game suspension. So, i think the bills could wait until July and see what happens. Dam, I wouldn’t mind Sean Alexander here if he was only getting a few touches a game and 950 grand. But still there are better guys.

I don’t think you can even give him 2 mil a season. That is a lot of money for someone who would get “5 touches a game at most”. There has to be a dozen better ways for the Bills to use 2 mil a year than on a runningback who is utilized that few times a game.
