NFL Free Agency Begins: Open Thread

[Note by Kurupt, 02/27/09 1:09 AM EST ] Rumblers, please follow this link for the final open thread of the night.  The thread you see is thread one; thread two is here, thread three is here. Thanks for coming by! [End Note]

Welcome to the start of the NFL Free Agent signing period at Buffalo Rumblings!

Before we get into signings and re-signings from around the rest of the league, let's quickly recap the busy Thursday of the Buffalo Bills:

- OG Derrick Dockery and TE Robert Royal were released
- OT Kirk Chambers and FB Corey McIntyre were re-signed
- A dozen restricted and exclusive rights free agents were tendered or re-signed
- The team hosted free agent CB Drayton Florence and LB Jamie Winborn

Please use those specific threads to discuss those topics.  This thread is for all of the news that's bound to roll in late tonight as the free agent signing period opens at midnight.

I would like us all to post ANY FA moves you find here.  If something comes up Bills-related - i.e. a team signing or a popular target comes off the market - please discuss those here as well until one of the site's main authors can address it on the front page.  Last year was just a tad bit wild with all of the posts we had everywhere!

Let's have some fun with this, folks.  It's going to be a long night, but it's also going to be an eventful one.  Strap on your thinking caps, get excited and GO BILLS!

Editor's Note, by Brian Galliford: I'd like extend a public thanks to WABillsFan for offering to run this open thread for the start of the NFL's 2009 free agent signing period.  Equal thanks go out to co-bloggers such as jri111 and Kurupt, whose night prowling makes my life infinitely easier.  I may be 23, but I'm 93 at heart, and value sleep as highly as Buffalo values the money it promised Derrick Dockery.  End Note

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Brian, I for one think that this needs to be our official title henceforth.

I’ll be bumping this to the front page at about 10 or 10:30 tonight as our free agency open thread.

Drayton Florence and Jamie Winborn visiting OBD today

I feel that this merits inclusion here as it does have a bearing on what happens tonight I feel. You can read about it here. I think they are approaching FA tonight with the thought that Greer is gone, and that they can get Winborn now for a bit of money especially as the markets for OLBs is a bit shaky.

Skins want Haynesworth too. If only Snyder had an uncapped year. John Clayton predicted Haynesworth would get a $100Mil deal for close to $20 Mil per year. That is very difficult to see. How much will Tampa overspend?

They will need to set aside about 5 mil for rookies due to their drafting positions

Some names I wouldn’t mind seeing tied to the Bills tonight:

Kendall Simmons (former 1st rounder coming off ACL injury early in 2008) and Chris Kemoeatu of the Steelers; Jason Brown of the Ravens; Brandon Moore of the Jets

Does it show that the Bills got my attention when they opened a new hole at guard?

But would he be more affective than anyone we could draft?

I don’t know, thats why I’m asking.

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 26, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously...

Is anyone expecting a big splash tonight?

With the cutting of Dock I’m looking for an interior lineman. Could the Bills have cleared his contract off the books specifically in order to make a serious run at Jason Brown? I don’t see the Bills outbidding the Redskins or Vikings…or even the Dolphins. Chris Brown at bb.com has a bit up about Jason Brown not being worth a bidding war. Of course, as the official mouthpiece of the Bills he could be saying that to try to make the obvious a little less so.

My guess is that the Bills sign Kedall Simmons (G-Steelers) and Jamie Winborn (LB-Broncos) tonight, announce a long term deal for Fred Jackson later in the week and extend Peters before the draft. Anyone else want to prognosticate?

by Ron From NM on Feb 26, 2009 9:29 PM EST reply actions

I think they get a big interior lineman whether that is one of the centers they covet (Brown, Birk, or someone else) or a guard.

I also see an out of nowhere signing, remember nobody heard anything about Mitchell last year before he was signed.

You could start to see the fall-off in his game towards the end of the 2006 season. Reggie Corner could cover Harrison.

Poor Reggie. Already the punchline of jokes. I think Corner has a ways to go, but I also think he’d have no problem covering Mar-Har

Not even half full…They had crowded of 15K or so at some points this past year. Those are mediocre crowds for December b-ball games against Colgate.

I went to SU during their last decent run. My soph year was Freeney’s last year, and the Dome was nearly filled every game then. I can’t believe how much the program has fallen since even that period. It makes me sad, especially with the hoops program following the same path.

Sage is going to cost them less than $2m a year. Warner wants $10-12 and Cassel is going to get a huge deal too. Two huge contracts to QBs that won’t come anywhere near matching their production in a different system. Minnesota doesn’t have Fitzgerald, Boldin and Breaston or Moss and Welker.

Just a friendly piece of advice to the moderator here…

I’d consider moving over to a new thread soon. Just from experience with the draft and the like, when this site gets really up there with responses, it starts to slow down.

If the Bills were a drug, I could only they were speed so I could lose some weight as well.

Barwin had a good combine.

I’m thinking the only place Kelsay is going is the bench more often. He’d be gone already.

As most of us have noticed, Greer may be more popular than expected

According to PFT, there will be some real interest in the current crop of CBs due to the low number of even decent guys, read up on it here

greer is a guy who worked so hard to make it and played so hard in the games he did play for us that I don’t mind him going somewhere and getting paid. I wish him the best. He deserves it.

I did not feel the same way about Nate Clements.

Not even Al Davis is pursuing Pacman. Greer will be very wealthy soon.

The problem with Pacman is that Buffalo doesn’t have any “Suburban Atlanta Stripclubs” for him to hang out in. He’d be so bored.

I’m sure him and Marshawn could roll some blunts and find their way to Sundowners.

Gameplan for tonight

I think what OBD has to do here is look at it this way:
No more dockery, no more royal, no more JP….what can we do to pick up the slack and get us back to 7-9?

4peat anyone?

i

will be happy with Jason Brown, Maualuga at #11 and a TE in round 2 like Jared Cook

Getting Jason

Brown gives this OL flexibility…..you could maybe put Walker inside, or let Chambers play inside….we won’t miss Dock at all, nor his huge contract.

exactly, and you can look at either G or C in the draft/free agency, instead of being restricted to guys who can fit the ball between their legs.

Careful

Bills can’t go too crazy tonight spending to the cap. They need to save some cash to pay Peters. He is still their best lineman.

Anyone else thinking Meester is a vialble option?

I’m just being realistic in saying that we would want no part of a bidding war for Brown and that Birk will probab;y be back in Mini. So I think Meester might be a good option to go after. At the very least he’s gonna be cheaper than Brown or Birk, and he would still be an upgrade over what we had last year. Am I the only one thinking this?

No fears, I'm hear...

It’s been a long (but good) day. After raeding 300+ comments on this thread before 11:20, all of the exitment has me ready to go! Let free agency begin :)

It is Thursday night. They should move this to Friday night!

From Rotoworld

Link
The Vikings have ended negotiations with free agent C Matt Birk and TE Jimmy Kleinsasser.
Some team might try to convert Kleinsasser into a full-time blocking back. He’s no longer a receiving threat. With Jeff Saturday signed, Birk becomes the top elder statesman on the center market and will get a multi-year deal.

Looks like Birk could be had for the right offer.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

OK GUYS

I just put a new thread up, please refer to the link at the top of thread that will be up in 2 minutes! It won’t be on the front page, since Brian told me to keep it super secret and hidden from all wrongdoers. I’m also going to close comments so everyone can jump over to that thread…..
