Ravens cut off talks with Jason Brown
Good news for the Bills? From PFT...
"Albert Breer of SportingNews.com reports, at the PFT safe haven site, that the Baltimore Ravens have cut off talks with free-agent-to-be Jason Brown.
Specifically, the Ravens have informed Brown that the player isn’t in their plans for 2009."

Hopefully, he’s not in Miami’s plans either after resigning Crowder and Gibril Wilson. That’d be nice if we have little competition for his services…

They have the money to get one more guy.
WR or center.

Ok so they either go after Brown or Coles, and we get the other guy. I’d be ok with that. I’d prefer to get Brown though.

What about Birk and Coles? They could swing that with the money....
As much as I like Toomer and Coles, I don’t think they will sign a free agent WR. My money is that they sign Birk this weekend and go after a vet QB with some OG and LB names thrown in for good measure.

Interesting here is that the report indicates that “4 or 5” teams will be in the market for Brown. I’d say the chances of the Bills being one of those teams is pretty high.

Dock's cutting is a clear indication the Bilsl
will throw money at Brown. I’m willing to go out there and say its a done deal, we are going to “Show him the Money” or something like that…
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.
I’d avoid calling it a done deal until further notice, because a) that’s tampering, and b) we already know that there is another center that the Bills really like.

And I prefer Brown because...
He is better suited for the guard position. Actually, they could draft Unger or Mack and decide in TC

Word is that Brown’s asking price is soaring because he’s being courted by numerous teams. Birk is far more likely, probably far cheaper, and probably the smarter signing at this point.

"I’m Kurupt with Buffalo Rumblings. I am worth hundreds!"
My take is they might pursue Brown as a guard
Then draft a Mack/Unger/Wood as Center.

I would bet the opposite
Center makes the line calls. Better to have a vet if possible.

i’d say the chances of us getting Birk if he doesn’t resign is somewhere in the 90% range
Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?
I don’t know why, and I can’t put my finger on it. But I get the feeling BG that you think they might go after Birk.
Meh, you’re just hearing things.

I like Birk – he’s a little older – but I think he can pull his weight for a couple more years.
your thoughts BG?
Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?
I’ve said all along that I think Birk has a good 3-5 years left in him. He’s worth a pretty significant contract here, and he’d immediately bring valuable leadership to a line that needs it. I’m all for signing him.

I might like Brown’s age better, but you couldn’t ask for a better person than Birk. His leadership is unquestioned.
I know many of you are not hockey fans around here, but some might be. I’d equate a Birk signing to the Rivet trade last year for the Sabres.
The Rivet comparison is solid.

I'm with you
Birk would probably exceed our expectations, and we might see at least a .5yd/carry increase over last year. It seems like a small number but if you multiply it by 450, that’s money.
Birk
I’ll be honest. I watch a lot of Birk living here in MPLS and he is solid, but I will admit his repuatation carries him farther than his play. he does play right next to Steve Hutchinson. Birk can still be a solid center, but to be honest playing against 3-4’s in our division 6 times a year, may not be up his ally. But then again, what center could dominate that matchup everytime? Birk said he is the healthiest he has been in 3 years. So I’m OK, with signing him for his character, work ethic and leadership, but don’t expect a mauler to come in here. He is really solid in the run game, and if we found a guard to be stout to his left along with Butler to the right, he would significantly upgrade the OL and short yardage efficiency
MARVelous
good assessment Marv
Birk would make an excellent mentor to whoever we draft to play guard for now and replace Birk in 3 years.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
I Like Birk but...
Like I said previously, Brown can play both positions – more versatile. I could see us now going after Unger or Mack in the draft and then letting them fight it out with Brown for the guard or Center positions, it just leaves more options than with Birk who has played Center his whole career. The upside of Birk is the veteran leadership.

I don’t think we see Birk hit the market. Word is he is VERY close to resigning.
The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.
What I want to see if how much less money it would cost to land him vs. Brown.

Is Dock's money for Brown?
And if so will the money go to his head as well?
Is Brown an “upgrade” over Dock Brian? I know they play different positions.

Brown is an upgrade over every lineman we have on our roster (excluding Peters)
and maybe including Peters.

I think Brown to Dock is pretty self explanatory. :)

No, there’s no chance of that. We won’t spend that much money.

I don’t see why not. There isn’t much else out there to spend our money on. And o-line should be a top priority for us (especially since we won’t address the pass rush in free agency)
If we’re giving two mega deals to offensive linemen, one of those deals will go to Jason Peters before both of them go to new faces. They might sign Brown/Birk and a Geoff Hangartner or Brandon Moore type, but they certainly won’t get both Brown and Birk. There’ll be too much interest from other teams and not enough money to go around here.

You do realize
We could end up with exactly the same scenario we just faced with Dockery, only more expensive. How much guaranteed money will there have to be to get him, $20mil? How much better would Brown be than a Birk/Meester/Hangartner and Top 3 center from the draft combo?
This is exactly why I think we’ll go after Birk.

Thought:
Is there ANY chance the Dolphins also look at Birk? He’d be great for them for the same reasons he’d be great for the Bills. I don’t know if Brown is all but done for the Bills.

Of course there is a chance.
I see Brown ending up in Miami or Minnesota. Just my thoughts. Nothing to back that up with.
Even with WIlson and Crowder they have the room to sign one guy. They may choose to go on a WR though.
