Bills continue busy Thursday, re-sign OT Chambers

The Buffalo Bills have re-signed reserve OT Kirk Chambers, according to ESPN.com's Tim Graham.  Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

Chambers has spent the past two seasons in Buffalo and has seen extensive playing time at both tackle positions as well as right guard.  With the team releasing OG Derrick Dockery earlier in the day, there is some speculation that Chambers might get an opportunity to compete for a starting spot on the inside, particularly if current right guard Brad Butler moves to the left side.  If not, he'll continue to give the Bills invaluable depth along their suddenly swiss cheese-like offensive line.

Buffalo has already released TE Robert Royal today, as well as re-signed FB Corey McIntyre.

I’d obviously like Ron from NM’s opinion – but from what I saw – he was solid when filling in – I think we found a diamond in the rough with Chambers. Good signing

Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?

For folks who missed it, Ron’s opinion was to move Brad Butler to left guard. Chambers has experience at right guard, so if he’s competing for a starting job, that’s likely where it’ll happen.

GOOD!

Maybe they want him to replace Dock at starting guard. I dunno if he’d be an upgrade, but he’s deffinatly going to cost less.

I like Chambers.

and the Bills had two fullbacks in camp last year. Not a stretch that they re-sign McIntyre and draft a guy who maybe ends up on the practice squad or replaces McIntyre.

McIntyre

I was hoping he’d be gone, not resigned. Maybe its a STs thing, but I don’t like him either.
Chambers guard, top flight center? Sounds good, but I would still draft a FA center’s replacement

Per Tim Grahm
Buffalo Bills retained Fred Jackson’s rights with a one-year tender for the minimum $460,000,……The minimum tender was expected, but Jackson doesn’t want to sign it. Jackson has insisted he deserves a multiyear contract.

by norcaliangelsfan on Feb 26, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would say he easily has a bigger impact than Lechler. The guy is by far the best cornerback in the league. In 2007 QBs threw a ball to the guy he was covering 35 times. That isn’t even 35 completions, that’s 35 passes attempted.

Asomugha is the best player on the team.

But his impact isn’t nearly the same. He’s never tested because teams don’t have to. Lechler is a game changing punter.

http://www.twoeightnine.com

by twoeightnine on Feb 26, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How many more yards per game, field position wise, does Lechler gain than an average punter?

And how much worse would that defense be without Asomugha on a yards per game basis?

I have to think replacing Asomugha with an average corner would hurt them much more than replacing Lechler with an average punter.

Compare his stats to the rest of the punters, he isn’t that much better than the average NFL punter.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/stats/byposition?pos=P

by kaisertown on Feb 26, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well they couldn't be that much worse.

They did give up the 27th most yards in the NFL.

http://www.twoeightnine.com

by twoeightnine on Feb 26, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And their pass defense gave up 7.2 yards per attempt, two tenths or a yard more than Buffalo and 1.6 yards less than last place Detroit. Oakland actually held opposing QBs to a 79.3 passer rating which was the 12th best total of any defense.

That sounds pretty badass actually, like we have a team of Lex Luthor, Dr. Evil, Darth Vader, and the Penguin running the scene, problem is they always lose to the likes of Superman, Austin Powers and the New England Patriots

Is Dockery is now the best G in FA

My thinking is that Brown was talking about G vc C pay only to get his salary negotiations to start at a higher level. How many teams that are interested in Brown wanted him to play G? Hopefully, with Dock in the FA pool, any of those teams that wanted Brown to play G will go after Dock, meaning less competition for Brown. I say pay Brown G money and play him at C or G depending on how the draft goes.

by NorCal BillsFan on Feb 26, 2009 4:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

dock is probably the highest out there for guards right now – he’ll get snatched up pretty quickly i’m guessing.

i doubt this does anything to improve our chances on getting Brown – but I guess we’ll have to wait and see

Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?

Jason Brown still qualifies as the best guard in free agency even though he might be signed to play center. Geoff Hangartner, Cooper Carlisle, Chris Kemoeatu and Mike Goff are some of the other names out there. I think it’s fair to say that Dockery will wind up getting one of the 2 or 3 biggest contracts of all the FA guards.

Stacy Andrews is another name out there. He blew out his knee last year and probably won’t be ready for the start of the season, but he can play RT or either guard spot, is monstously huge (6’7’’, 342) and is still fairly young (soon to be 28) with some upside left.

According to John Clayton....
The two moves [cutting Dockery and Royal] would free up a total of about $8 million in salary cap space for a team that has missed the playoffs for nine consecutive years, the worst streak in franchise history.

That’s a lot more than I thought it freed up…….

Cap hit – Accelerated money = savings
Royal: $2.3M – $1.1M = $1.2M
Dock: $5.8M – $5.4M = $400K

Total savings = in reality, right around $1.7M

when we signed him to an 18 million bonus most was paid out in the frst 2 years. The rest of the contract is void after his cut anyway. So, Claytons numbers definitely make sense

This was posted a little over a week ago, but it’s a little inaccurate now. There are some releases factored into that final figure that haven’t happened yet, and others (Dockery) that aren’t. So take it for what it’s worth, and don’t forget to factor in the extra $4M from the league, but that’ll give you a ballpark.

Chris Brown also discusses replacements....
Filling the now vacant left guard position can obviously be done either through free agency or the draft. Pittsburgh free agent Chris Kemoeatu is widely considered the best free agent guard option in the league and is expected to test the market. The Jets are also reportedly poised to release guard Brandon Moore.

Another consideration could be Bills veteran free agent lineman Kirk Chambers, who has served primarily as a swing tackle for the team the past two seasons. Chambers is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

Oh dear god you guys do not want Chris Kemo. Whatever team gets stuck with him is going to regret it – I think that any team that is considering taking him should realize that the pittsburgh steelers let him go. The O-line isn’t exactly a position of strength for pittsburgh.

Hi guys. I’m mocking for the bills on “behind the steel curtain” and am boning up on Bills knowledge. Don’t mind me.

No Worries Steelguy99

Chris “Cheesecake” Kemoeatu is way too soft for us. That guy is simply not very good compared to the money he will want, I like Brandon Moore waaaaayyyyy more than Kemo. What disturbs me is the idea that Brownie is floating the idea out to gauge the fans support of such a move.

“Pittsburgh free agent Chris Kemoeatu is widely considered the best free agent guard option in the league”

I never thought much of the guy and I haven’t read a single post that even mentions him a quality player much less the best FA G in the league. Come on OBD, not another Tutan Reyes signing!

As “labill” says above:

The funny thing is I think Dockery and Royal will be considered the top available FAs at their positions.

Good year to be a crappy TE or guard in the draft. I have a feeling there is going to be a fistfight over Brown this year but the steelers will be happy no matter who gets him because it won’t be the ravens.

Playing Eternal Optimist at Buffalo Rumblings since 2008.

by MattRichWarren on Feb 26, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’d be great. The steelers have been freeing up some capital to make some moves in the FA. From the looks of it almost every single team is salivating over Brown though and the steelers won’t have the money to compete. That’s if they even want to compete, the steelers never seem to pay big bucks for FAs.

Most expect the steelers will draft a center this year and I’m happy with that scenario. He’ll sit at guard for a year or wait in the wings though as our current center is probably the most stable part of the line – for what that is worth.

Athletic Potential

Here is a post by BG back from 1/5/2009:

  1. Demetrius Bell
      6’7", 307 pounds
      Age: 25 in May 2009
Contract status: 3 years remaining (UFA after 2011); owed $1.41M in base salaries.
    - Buffalo’s coaching staff is really high on this kid, but they didn’t want to put him on the field in 2008 because they wanted to keep him in their weight program. They think he’ll be ready to contribute as a reserve in 2009, and he has the capability to start beyond that point. Bell is an outstanding developmental project that could start producing for Buffalo as soon as next year.

I agree with that assessment, you don’t have to, but 300lb men with quick feet, long arms, smarts, & big hands are rare commodities. Due to his lack of playing time and good coaching his technique is his weakness.

It's ok. I thought you meant as a starter.

Honestly, I don’t want him to see the field at all this year. He’s too raw and if he’s playing that means whoever is starting is injured. Let him get another year under his belt. Don’t forget, the staff thought Ellis was going to be a contributor this past year and that didn’t quite work out. Linemen take time, especially if you’re as new to the game as Bell.

After reading about it some more and looking through the comments, was it really worth it to cut Dockery to save $400K? I know it was less of a financial move and more of a “you suck” move, but are we going to find anyone better in FA or the mid rounds of the draft? I really don’t think so. Dockery was pretty awful in 2008, nobody will argue that, but he was pretty solid in 2007. I’m still a little worried that this is just going to be another major hole for a long while.

It’s one thing to cut a guy, who’s played poorly and save $8M in cap space, but to save $400K? Unless he had some crazy bonuses due soon, why couldn’t we have just let him come to camp with the caveat that he is fighting for his job and will be forced to earn playing time? Wouldn’t that have been a better scenario? If he didn’t win the job, cut him in the preseason. Instead, we have another gaping hole to fill in FA or the draft. Can someone figure out if there is anything more than playing poorly and a big future contract in play here????

Really, can’t you just bench the guy and try to light a fire under him or something?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Exactly

especially when you’re only saving $400K!

Ahh well

They save 400k to the cap...

but the amount of money they save for Ralph is significant. Salary is the important part here because you know they are not spending to the cap. They free up the money they would be using to pay these bums to pay some other bums. The signing bonus was already paid so that only matters in terms of the salary cap.
