The Vikings have ended negotiations with free agent C Matt Birk and TE Jimmy Kleinsasser.
Some team might try to convert Kleinsasser into a full-time blocking back. He’s no longer a receiving threat. With Jeff Saturday signed, Birk becomes the top elder statesman on the center market and will get a multi-year deal.
Looks like Birk could be had for the right offer.

I think if the Bills let everyone else fight over Brown and they make a strong play for Birk he could be ours.

he’d be MUCH cheaper than Brown, seeing as there WILL BE a bidding war for him.
If we get Birk and then draft a player that can play both center and guard (i’m thinking Wood here) we’d be set on the o-line.

I think Saturday’s deal will be the parameter for a potential Birk deal. $13.5/3 years sounds about right, though Saturday is a year older.

and my sources told me on tues that birk wouldn’t be back…..he’s pretty distraught about it being he is a native Minnesotan and is so involved in the community here and owns his own famous “Matty B’s” Steakhouse in downtown MPLS….

I’ll have to ask for it. There’s a lot of Argentinians down there but I’m not sure of Brazilians. A three shot margarita is 2 bucks. The best place to buy booze is Walmart. The BIG bottle of Kahlua is 9 bucks.

Anybody see the ‘debate’ him and Kiper had about Stafford last night? McShay was talking about dropping Stafford because some teams thought he was immature, maybe dropping to the 10-15 range. Kiper asked him if he thought Stafford would be a QB, which he responded yes to. Kiper asked him why his immaturity would be an issue if he thought he was going to be a good QB, and likely won’t play in his first year anyhow. McShay just kept stumbling around his words saying NFL teams told him they were going to drop STafford. +1 for Kiper

The Providence Journal reports that free agent Fred Taylor is likely to join the Patriots.
The paper believes Taylor, 33, “likely has at least three good seasons left.” While that’s far from likely, Taylor figures to come cheap and will be a candidate for significant early-down carries in New England. It appears he’s choosing Bill Belichick’s club over Dick Jauron’s. Not exactly a tough one.

The National Football Post has learned that the St. Louis Rams could join the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs as potential suitors for center Jason Brown when free agency opens at midnight eastern tonight. It’s possible the Rams could be leaders in the Brown sweepstakes, according to sources.

Great Lakes Burning River is fantastic…

I am in St. Louis, so the drive isn’t worth it. And anything by Great Lakes Brewing Company (they are out of Cleveland) is really good. I just enjoy the smaller craft beers. But I don’t have the money…

Edwards was 0-8 in his final year at Stanford.
Why did we draft him?

And the reason why we drafted him is that Bill Walsh personally recomended him to Ralphy. You might remember Walsh, he’s the guy who found Joe Montana in the 3rd round and Steve Young even later in the draft.

Around midpoint of the season next year, Edwards will have more starts then Losman ever had in Buffalo.
He already has had far more starts then Losman did going into 2006 (where he was #11 against the toughest schedule in the league).
So how long is that ‘just a rookie’ excuse good for.

With the NFL free agent market set to open in roughly one hour, here is what the National Football Post has been hearing:
1. The Washington Redskins are the front-runners to sign free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.
2. However, the Detroit Lions are also rumored to be making a push for Haynesworth’s services.
3. The Lions are also very interested in Pittsburgh free agent cornerback Bryant McFadden.
4. The Baltimore Ravens are interested in signing Atlanta free agent cornerback Domonique Foxworth.
5. The Cleveland Browns may be interested in signing free agent running back Derrick Ward.

It’s here, folks. Free agency is officially underway. We’ve been working the phones all evening. Here’s the latest on what the Redskins are doing.
It looks like midnight has arrived on the East Coast without a deal for cornerback DeAngelo Hall. It also looks like the Redskins will attempt to sign free-agent guard Derrick Dockery, who was unexpectedly released by the Bills on Thursday.
Dockery is a former third-round pick by the Redskins and he still has a lot of fans within the organization. He could immediately help solidify an offensive line that showed cracks in the second half of the 2008 season.
With veteran guards Pete Kendall and Randy Thomas fighting through injuries, Dockery could be a huge help. He’s remained close to former first-round pick Chris Samuels and the two would be the team’s top linemen.
