Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

The Buffalo Bills made a strong push for the services of RB Fred Taylor, but the veteran chose to compete for a championship by signing with the Patriots this morning, reports Adam Schefter.

With Taylor off the market, Buffalo has now turned its attention to former Lion and Bear Kevin Jones. Adding a veteran runner is very clearly a priority for the Bills.

WE can still see him twice a year.

Well, we shut him down last year, so I’m not overly concerned. He’ll help NE, though…

He is a big upgrade for the Pats

While here he would be third in line. He also has a shot at a ring. I can’t say that I blame him.

Brian, the Giants are supposedly going to offer Michael Boley a contract for 5 mil a year. He is definitely someone I was hoping OBD would pursue. How likely is it?

We’re not sure this will get it done. While Boley lost his starting job in Atlanta last season and playing for the Giants would appeal to anyone, he’s arguably worth more. Boley is a Pro Bowl defender when utilized correctly.

He was the guy I was hoping to get but that is about what I wanted to pay for him.

I was worried

I was just worried they would use him as a number two and then trade Jackson or Lynch. Glad thats not the case.

by south123 on Feb 27, 2009 8:53 AM EST reply actions

I can say that was 100% not in the plan.

They want to make the team better…. that would not do that.

This doesn't bother me at all

We already have Lynch and Fred which are very similar – I want our 3rd rb to be a quick change of pace kind of guy.

he will help the pats because they will probably use him in space out of the 4 or 3 WR set’s and have him 1 on 1 with a LB – we just have to make sure we’re on top of that.

Oh. Uh, will you hold my wallet for me while I take the test, please? There's a thousand dollars in there... or maybe there isn't. Know what I mean?

K. Jones

Jones broke in with the Lions when DJ was DC there. I saw every game he played that year and when healthy (big issue with him) he is studly. He can run over you or past you. Great hands too. I know he had a knee a couple of years ago and the Bears hardly used him last year once they committed to to Forte. I think he’s like 27 or 28 and while he is not the veteran presence Taylor would have been, if he can pass a physical he’s a better RB.

ha, good timing

Exactly my thoughts Geronimo. He’s one of those “diamond in the rough” players, if things could start working out for him (i.e. staying healthy). He would be an addition I could get excited about. I would still rather have the team add more of a “scat back” though. A third man in the mold of Bradshaw from the Giants. Lynch and Jackson are awesome, but they aren’t homerun threats. It would be nice to put a speedser in there for some carries late in the game after Lynch and Jackson have been wearing down the defense for a while.

However......

I think you need to think of a third back as somebody who will play a lot during Lynch’s likely suspension. No scat back needed then—-rather somebody who can make third and one. Hence a Jones or Taylor type.

Are they 100% convinced a lengthy suspension is coming?

I do not know if "convinced is the right word, but they are expecting one and planning for it.

that seems...

A little short sited though. Even if Lynch gets say 4 games (or even 8), I think Jackson would be able to handle the short yardage situations in that time. Over the length of the season and beyond, a home-run threat could be invaluable.

I’m not going to be upset if they pick up a vet (especially one with upside like Jones), but, as I said, just seems short sighted.

Disagree

if you watched at all last year it was prety obvious that, as much as we all like him, short yardage is NOT Freddie’s gig in the least.. Go back to the first Dolphins and Jets games.

by Geronimo on Feb 27, 2009 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

okay

Even if I concede that short yardage is not his short game, I still think it’s short-sited. Like I said, I’m all for adding a vet, can’t have too many good runningbacks

haha

should have re-read what I wrote before I posted it!

should have read: Even if I concede that short yardage is not Freddie’s calling, I still think it’s short-sited. Like I said, I’m all for adding a vet, can’t have too many good runningbacks

my thoughs:

- Not overly disappointed that Taylor didn’t sign with Buffalo, not becuase I didn’t like him, but because I really didn’t see how he would fit well w/ Lynch and Jackson, who have similar running styles.

- That said, I hate that he went to the Pats.

-Kevin Jones: love him! He is explosive and has a lot of talent. HIs biggest problem is staying on the field – he’s like the Ken Griffey Jr. of football. Buffalo may be a good fit for him, where he’s not being asked to carry the whole load

I agree with you on everything.

Any of my commenst are really redundant.

Jones can get 5 touches a game without getting hurt can’t he?

Haynesworth……wow

No surprise with Taylor. Kevin Jones would be a cheap, quality pickup

i know – naynesworth is getting 32million in 13months guaranteed – thats over 2 million a GAME!! is any player worth more than 2 million a game?

The Redskins are the NFL’s Yankees. Stupid money, stupid way to spend it, imo. I know he’s the ultimate at DT, but he’s not even a full-time player. I will laugh if his production falls off by leaving his DC in Tennessee. Snyder will be dangerous next year if there is not cap.

Freddie,Marshawn, whomever

when are people going to learn that the OFFENSIVE LINE is the reason we don’t convert on third and fourth-and-short?

Forget the Fred Taylors of the world and start getting some people up front who can push defenses back when it counts!!

frankly, I don't know

You follow this a lot more than me. If they fit the bill, fine.

I just want some tough, stud linemen who can push people back when we need a yard. I’m tired of 10-plus years of not being able to do that.
