Matt Cassel traded to the Chiefs
It looks to me like Pioli is making all the right moves this offseason. He gets a reliable veteran LB in Vrabel and now goes out and gets one of the hottest qb's from last year in Cassel. This is sending the Chiefs right into contention in a very weak division in my opinion. Excellent moves by the Chiefs organization. Now if they can keep Larry Johnson and happy man and keep him healthy, they will have a fighting chance. As you can tell, I am personally very impressed.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Cassel and Vrabel dont catapult them into contention
if they compete its because their young roster is developing
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.

I disagree.
You add the caliber of player that Vrabel is on defense with his leadership ability that only adds to that team. I also said it could move them into contention in a “weak division”. Not like I was saying they would go to the Superbowl.
Why do people “always” miss the actual points of a post??
by Hambone on Feb 28, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Vrabel has slipped.
He’s been on a steady downward trend since 2005 and is getting old. He’s going to be a leader but his “caliber” isn’t going to put them over the top of anything.

dont think I missed the point of your post
nor do i think it always happens. You open a topic for discussion be prepared to defend your argument is all, friend. I just don’t think Vrabel will have as much impact as he did for the Pats, must be a reason they let him go, age. I also think Cassel is overrated, remember how well Jon Kitna played with the weapons the Lions gave him? I like Jon Kitna, so I’m not saying Cassel is bad, hes a competent QB but the Chiefs dont have enough weapons to make him a major impact QB
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.

his foot injury is gonna kill him in the top 5, especially with upcoming surgery. I think K is right and that Aaron Curry goes to the Chiefs where they let Vrabel groom him

Is he throwing to Moss and Welker?
Did Belichick replace Edwards?
by twoeightnine on Feb 28, 2009 1:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
once again, missing the point i made
in my original post. This isnt about Moss, Welker or Belichick. This is about “Pioli” making the right moves for a team that needs to turn things around. Do you think Belichick does what he has without Pioli bringing in the right guys? Come on man. The point was…..This will help the Chiefs improve in THEIR DIVISION….LOL
On a side note: I do feel they have an impressive young WR in Bowe and obviously one of the best TE’s in football with Gonzo. That in itself makes them better with a viable QB and experience added to their young D.
by Hambone on Feb 28, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think your missing his point. His point was that Cassel is going to dissapoint without the weapons that NE has and without the great coaching that NE has. I think Cassel is barely an improvement over Tyler Thigpen.

about my opinion at seasons end I would like u to come back and admit it.
I just think its funny that nobody is talking about one of the best young, up and coming wr’s in the league in dwayne bowe being there and they already have one of, if not, the best TE in football.
It only helps them. Hide and watch!!!!

I wouldn’t crown yourself some prophet just yet though, Cassel has to prove it outside of the Belicheck system….

Assuming that Cassel can stay healthy, he could make a run at the league record for most sacks in a season. He led the league by getting sacked 47 times last year and that was behind a line that never had much of a problem keeping Brady on his feet.
Sure Dwayne Bowe is a great player and Tony G still has some gas left in the tank, but I think Cassel throws way more picks and just turns the ball over a lot in general next season. If KC’s passing attack improves a lot, I will gladly say that I was wrong, but I have just never been that impressed with Cassel when I have seen NE play.
by kaisertown on Feb 28, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Being sacked is one thing, but, you can also attribute that to an offensive line that did not live up to their billing last year and a young qb that was thrown into the starting position.
What I would like to point out is that over the first 8 games he averaged a QB rating of 87.4, 195 yd passing and a 1/1 td to t/o ratio. The 2nd half of the year was a bit different. This kid took off. QB rating of 95, 265 yd passing and a 3.5/1 td to t/o ratio. IMO, he grew up quite a bit and proved his worth in that type of system.

Best part of this for the Bills
is that Sanchez could slip to us at #11 if SF does not take him. The Bills phones should be ringing off the hook with teams looking to deal for the pick, which is exactly what the Bills need…more picks!!!!

Many think Mike S. will want to go with a defensive pick,
and will probably take whoever the Bills have as their targeted pick at DE. SF might not want to trade out in that case.

This doesn't help us
because the Pats will also get the number three pick—they always seem to be able to grab first round picks even last year when they lost theirs! We can’t even trade down in the first round and get more picks and they just keep adding to their roster high picks that always seem to work out for them.

If you're a GM why would you give up anything for Cassel?
The Pats were in between a rock and a hard place and teams knew it. $30m on the roster for 2 players that can only play one at a time plus no cap space? Plus some decent draft options and players like Warner out there who have proven that they aren’t a one year wonder.
by twoeightnine on Feb 28, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And let me remind everyone that KC is going to have to give Cassel a huge contract now. Collins just somehow got 7.5 mil per season. If Cassel were just a FA and you didn’t even have to give up any compensation, I wouldn’t give him the contract he is about to get. Throwing in the 34th pick in the draft seems like KC is giving up a lot.
by kaisertown on Feb 28, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe
Maybe they planned to release Vrabel.
Don’t forget NE would have had to pay Cassel $14M if they didn’t trade him. They didn’t have as much leverage due to that.
The 2nd is also what, the 34th pick, or so? Not bad.

nah
14 mil for Cassel? Pats as usual are doing the hosing. Vrabel is old, and they through the tag on Cassel, and it isn’t a big risk because he is only under contract for a year right? or does the tag evporate and they have to punch out a new deal?
If anything, this is like insider trading if the tag goes away. It scared off other teams, they weren’t going to resign him, and then Pioli got his man. And the 34th pick isn’t bad. Pats have three 2nd round picks now
The Bills CAN win every game

Yeah, I saw on the 11:00 sportscenter that Michael Smith said that NE wanted to include Vrabel in the deal to clear up cap space and basically because they didn’t really even want him on the team anymore. Vrable would be the oldest player on the Bills roster and other than Brian Moorman, it would be by a few years. I’m not sure how we are the only ones who thought NE made out like bandits in this trade.
by kaisertown on Mar 1, 2009 2:02 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Wow, apparently NE isn’t as dominant as we all thought. I giggle at the thought of franchising a guy and losing 2 key players for 1 2nd-rounder.

by Hambone on Feb 28, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Surprised they couldn’t get more, but it is a great deal for the Pats. They get a good year out of a 7th rounder then trade him for a 2nd, what 3 years(???) after drafting him. It’s a good deal for both sides, but I’m surprised that the Pats couldn’t get any more.

I feel vindicated
In my post on Feb 11th where I was suggesting that the chiefs would trade for Cassel, you & MRW were very skeptical…
I guess I am his nephew or maybe he’s mine- haha
In any case it’s nice to know that I called it right!
So my point at the time was that there is a chance that Sanchez will be available at #11 and that the Bears might be interested in tradiong up to finally get their franchise guy, I stand by my position, the Bears could be a great trading partner.

A full time 3 down TE is a better option than a speedy pass-catching TE that we cannot use on sweeps & draw plays. What Pettigrew doesn’t have in speed he makes up in size, arm length, body control and great hands.
We would be in real good shape with Pettigrew at 18

You're right about it...
It’s not Pioli’s MO to bring in a free agent QB. He never did it in NE. He helped pick two late round QBs that developed into starting talents. I said based on past history it’s unlikely. For what they paid, they got a defensive leader and stability at QB.

Why are some of you so surspried that NE “only” got the 34th pick in the draft.
I’m surprised they were able to get that much for an average QB who will now have to be given a huge payday.
I disgree that Pioli has been impressive so far in KC. Vrabel is turning 34 this summer. He has had more than 10 fewer tackles then the season before for 3 consecutive years. He is huge and is an average middle linebacker in a 3-4 or a below average rush LB in a 3-4. He should help the players already on the roster transition to a 3-4 (if that’s the plan, I’m not sure why you bring him in if you are sticking with a 4-3).
In a few seasons, I think we will all be looking back at this Cassel trade thinking that the Pats ripped them off. I think he will be a decent QB there, but he isn’t taking that team anywhere and he will never live up to contract that KC will now have to give him. I think that history will show that this trade pushes KCs rebuild process back a few seasons.

Really, it's not too much to ask.
Don’t spend just for the sake of spending (Kelsay, Dockery, Royal). Do it right.
They already missed out on Jason Brown. Coles probably isn’t coming back. Once a player leaves without signing a contract, they usually don’t come back. What about Matt Birk and Sean Jones? OBD won’t do it, but if healthy, I would bring Angelo Crowell back.
