There are a lot of good names on there, and guys I would like to see in a Bills uni.
I am unsure, what we will do in FA as opposed to the draft.
I know what positions we need, and I think a back up QB is a definite in FA.
I don’t see us drafting another TE
I can see a drafted DE and a FA DE
I see another safety via FA(Jim Leonard anyone?)
OLB could be either draft or FA, but I would not mind if we took one at 11 if it were the best player at that spot.
I don’t want a WR brought in. Personally I think we are “good” there, if guys develop properly. If we bag one in FA, then I would say that the staff doesn’t feel Hardy was good enough and Stevie Johnson will take longer to develop.
I would love a DT in the draft if we get someone huge, but I don’t think so in FA
OH YEAH, DRAFT A CENTER….I would rather not paytoo much for one in FA, get one to keep for the long haul…

Jim Leonard ain't comin back.

He’ll go to New York to play for his BFF Ryan.

WR – if they bag a WR reciever in F/A it could just be because Hardy is coming off major surgery and won’t be himself this year.

or because Hardy looked horrendous last year and didn’t show any ability to be a quality pro. No flashes of brilliance, nothing. Hopefully, it’s all due to him being a rookie and not him being too slow and stiff (like I tend to think).

I think a vet is necessary regardless of where Hardy is expected to be. We can’t rely on him knowing it’ll be tough for him to be 100% by August. I’d much rather hedge my bets and get a veteran in here, one that can help our offense.

Me too

I am very afraid Hardy is not the answer, and in effect, another wasted pick. Jauron was dead set on a big wide out, but he should just be looking at the best players available, not there physical distinctions. I still have hope for Hardy, but I would not be against a vet coming in, if the knowledge that the staff has is that they are equally afraid as you or I might be that Hardy isn’t going to be ready in time, and may have greatlt stunted his growth as a pro.

The guy I usually compare Hardy to is Plaxico Burress...

They are both really tall, good leapers, etc. (both have allegedly discharged firearms at inappropriate times.)

Plaxico’s year one stats:
12 games, 8 starts; 22 receptions, 273 yards, 0TD
Year two – first 1000 yard season, 6 TDs and the rest is history gunshot wounds aside.

Hardy’s year one stats:
5 games, 0 starts; 9 receptions, 87 yards, 2 TD
now Hardy’s year 2 will be different because of the knee injury but I can see the kid exploding once he figures it all out. His year 1 recieving yards per game was just below Plax’s.

But then again I’m an optimist….

They're both tall

but I don’t see Hardy having the same athleticism Burress has, and Burress isn’t all that athletic. He uses his body SO well, something Hardy showed no propensity for this year. That’s his best hope at a long NFL career since he’s not going to do it on speed and athleticism. If Hardy doesn’t learn how to use his body to his advantage, he’ll never amount to anything.

Well you're obviously right about Plax...

I know you call Hardy stiff but I am tall. Can’t someone teach him how to use his body ??? Call me I’ll come help at training camp.

PS.

As I have said before I am a fan of Amani Toomer for one-two years to bridge the gap between Hardy/Johnson now and Hardy/Johnson then.

I love the idea of the vet toomer coming in

If he’s cheap, which i think he will be, I see no reason not to give a one or two year deal. Jenkins can get cut and we’ll use someone else on special teams, since I didn’t think he did much anyway

What's on the Bills?

That they left a mediocre at best safety leave? I like Jim Leonard’s character and skills but guys like him are on the bench all over the league. He was on the bench in Baltimore too ya know.

He wasn’t that great in Baltimore. Had a few INT’s, but was nothing special. Here he was always a step slow and out of place. You can’t criticize the Bills for letting that go!

The most Baltimore I watched was in the playoffs and he showed up big time. Maybe its wrong to base it on just that, but there is no arguing he played the best I have ever seen him play

That was when he played because of injuries.

He rode the pine for most of the year

Hill

Looks like OLB is the position with the most talented UFA’s. I would go after LeRoy Hill with intent. Of all UFA’s on the list that might be willing to separate with their current team, Hill would help the Bills the most. Can we really expect Crowell to re-sign? I would rather not. Make a big move for LeRoy.

Over at Field Gulls...

They are expecting Hill to be too expensive to sign, since they don’t have much cap space. Hill is an excellent blitzer and a very solid tackler.

BTW they are drooling over Everette Brown, too.

We’ll have more on Leroy Hill tomorrow, and Kurupt will have more on Everette Brown sometime in March.

Leroy Hill...........

is a solid player but nothing spectacular……YET. Personally, I am very fond of the safeties that are FA’s. I think there are 4 or 5 that could be starters on any team next year. This being stated, the Bills should pick up Elam formerly of the Jets and outright cut Whitner AND Simpson. Elam could replace Whitner and Scott would replace Simpson. Whitner is HORRIBLE in pass coverage and he is too small to come up and support the run.

Whitner is truly a BUST and his contract is too much for a small market team.

Whitner’s contract isn’t close to prohibitive. I’m not sure where you got that.

Let me assure you that a safety duo of Abram Elam and Bryan Scott would be infinitely worse than the duo we have now. Elam is despised in New York. There’s a reason they’re going to let him walk.

Abram Elam??? If I’m cutting Whitner I want a player BETTER then Donte, I don’t think that is the case with Elam.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Feb 5, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Elam sucks man. Just because he made a few plays against us doesn’t make up for the fact that he’s normally terrible.

As bad as Whitner may have been in the playmaking department, I am still anticipating a make or break year for him, and would not cut a #8 pick until it is clear that he is single handedly bringing down the D, which is not the case. The Bills D is collectively weak…..cut the coordinator, and the head coach…Oh yeah, after next year’s 5-11 record

What's the story with Vick next year?

Won’t he be an UFA, or is it 2010 he’ll be eligible to return?

Otogwa

Am I the only one to think OJ Otogwa would be great in our backfield? he’s fabulous in coverage and a pretty good tackler… the rams aren’t likely to let him go, but i can dream can’t i?

Atogwe isn’t getting out of St. Louis, and neither is his teammate, Ron Bartell.

I few FA I would target

I would target
Safety
Bigby or CC Brown
WR
R. Williams (good competition) gives Hardy time to heal
Center
Saturday (if healthy) great mentor for a newly drafted center, plus time to develop him.
TE
Daniels – won’t be availible, but we can dream right? The only knockout TE availible

How many years can we go without making the playoffs...eventually the odds go in your favor.........right?!?!?

by Rudy916 on Feb 5, 2009 10:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Anyone from this list

I would be happy with any of these guys – the more we can afford the better

Reggie Williams, Mike Furrey – WR
Bo Scaife – TE
Matt Birk, Jason Brown – C
Jeff Garcia, Byron Leftwich- QB
Terrell Suggs – DE/LB
Mike Peterson, Takeo Spikes, Jonathan Vilma- LB
Mike Brown, Darren Sharper-S
Lorenzo Neal-FB

Reggie Williams bothers me because he is the reason we don’t have Ben Roethlisberger (according to Schoope and the Bulldog we would have traded into Jax’s draft spot if Williams weasn’t on the board. He was and the Steelers got Big Ben).

No Jeff Garcia – he wants to start and won’t be able to here.

TKO is not coming back after we traded him away.

I am a big fan of bringing in Neal, though.
