2009 Surprise Players

I just want to list a 3 second year players on the Bills team who could pleasantly surprise us next year.

Alvin Bowen OLB:

Bowen is 6'1'' 222 lbs.  He played college football at Iowa State, the Bills drafted him in the 5th round last year.

He led the nation with 95 solo tackles in 2006, that was more solo tackles than Patrick Willis.  In 2007 he had a 67 solo tackles placing him the top 50.  However, he did make improvements in 2007.  In 2006 he only had 5 tackles for loss, in 2007 he had 12.5 tackles for loss.

Check out his video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYLcn0_jbRk

Check out his profile at http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/alvin-bowen?id=2342#player-profile-tab-set-1:player-profile-tab-analysis

James Hardy WR

Most recievers have a tough time in their first year, much like Hardy did.  First, Hardy was recruited to play basketball at Indiana (one of the top basketball programs at the time), so you know he is a special athlete.  After his freshman year, he decided to switch to football, and he was a beast.  Sophmore year he had 10 tds, Junior year he had 10 td's, Senior year he had 16 td's.  His senior year he was 2nd in the nation for td's behind only Michael Crabtree.  Considering Hardy is 6'5'' 220 lbs with a 4.47 forty yard dash and a 37.5 inch vertical, the touchdowns are hardly surprising.  Furthermore, he averaged 86.5 yards a game showing he is not just a td machine.

Check out his video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afr3PoA9ibI

Check out his scouting report at http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?Prospect_ID=1246

Steve Johnson WR

We have already seen that Johnson can be a pretty good player, but I think he can be REALLY good.  He started playing football his Junior and Senior year in college, so he was completely raw.  Somehow, his senior year, he was able to bring in 13 touchdown passes (4th in the Nation!).  Also, he averaged 80.9 yards receiving a game.  He has pretty good size at 6'2'' and 202 lbs.  Bills fans should only expect to improve each and every practice/game.

I couldn't find many good videos on him.  But you can check out his game winning catches against LSU and Louisville on Youtube.

Check out his scouting report at  http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/steve-johnson?id=768#player-profile-tab-set-1:player-profile-tab-overview

I actually had all 3 of these guys and Leodis McKelivin on my "Bills Hopefuls" list last draft.  So, if the past predicts the future at all, here are the guys I have on my Bills Hopefuls list for the upcomming draft.  Tell me if you recognize any of the not so hpyed up players I have bolded.

I agree with you on Bowen.

I think he may really surprise some people if he can make it out of training camp.

Hardy will probably be a year 3 guy. His knee is going to take him out of what he needs to do and that is route running. If he had hurt his shoulder, I would say yeah he’ll break out,. He needs to figure out how to be in the right place at the right time and that means running routes with Trent, something he won’t be able to do until at least the preseason.

If Johnson has a great training camp, expect him to leap from Roscoe in the passing game and become the number three receiver (barring someone else coming in)

Leap from Roscoe? Haha. That’d be awesome to see!

leap frog...

leap fro Roscoe is still a pretty neat image.

If it was Wendling he could do it from a standing position.

Agreed

Unfortunately, I think you may be right about Hardy. There seems to be that 3 year rule on receivers. I’m not completely sure about his injury, but it would make sense that it would hold him back. Still, I feel the Bills can utilize him in the rezone and he can have a tremendous impact thus being a “surprise player”. I don’t think his injury should limit him too much in the red zone. I mean he’s 6’5’’, has a 37.5 inch vertical, former recruit for Indiana basketball, had 16 td’s his senior year of college.

I also feel Johnson should surpass Roscoe in the passing game. If Johnson keeps improving at the rate that he has been, we are talking about a REALLY good player in a year or two.

If his rehab lags, he may start the year on the PUP list and not even play until week 7.

Excellent chance of that

He’s almost a lock to miss all of OTAs and training camp and I’d be stunned if he didn’t spend weeks 1-6 on the PUP list. Besides, if I remember right Hardy won’t take up a roster slot if he’s on the PUP list.

RIght he won't cost a roster spot.

Can he practice on PUP? Not New England practice but like legit practice.

I think he can start practicing while on PUP, but the team only has a couple weeks before the team either has to activate him or put him on IR. Can anyone be more specific? I don’t feel like looking it up.

by kaisertown on Feb 8, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

A PUP player must stay on the PUP list for the first 6 weeks of the year, after which the team has 3 more weeks to evaluate him to put him back in the roster or on IR. so i’m guessing those 3 evaluating weeks means he’s alloud to practice. i couldn’t find out if he’s alloud to practice in the first 6 weeks of PUP though.

well Bowen and Hardy will be suprises if they do anything this year that remotely resembles playing football....

Minus Hardy’s one great catch at Jax…….it’s like him and bowen were never here.

Well Bowen wasn't there except training camp.

He had a season-ending injury there.

OK...

I think he has to do more than that but you’re not gonna get any guff from me for that.

Yea that is not what I mean by surprise. I"m thinking they could both maybe start and be some of our better players. James Hardy could be our Plaxico Burress type of thing and Alvin Bowen could be our Karlos Dansby.

Your setting the bar pretty high

Buress and Dansby? give it a few more season and maybe, but I highly doubt that they’ll do that this season, especially Hrdy with the kind of injury he had.

I see Bowen eventually developping in our SAM LB, but not this year. I’D call Bowen a pleasent suprise if he becomes an effective rotational LB this year, and that I can easily see happen. 50 would be a good atainable goal for him next season, and an impressive one too.

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 8, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You think Bowen gets 50 tackles???

Only five players on our team got there last year:

Poz 87
McGee 61
Mitchell 57
Scott 51
Whitner 50

Ellison, the guy he’d be replacing had 47. I’d be happy if Bowen had 20 tackles (on line with Spencer Johnson’s 2008 number, another rotational player in the Bills scheme).

by MattRichWarren on Feb 9, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. If Bowen can just play wel enough to be active every week and get a special teams tackle each game and end up with 16-18 tackles, then i will be happy with him as a 5th round pick who is essentially a rookie in his first year back from a major knee injury.

by kaisertown on Feb 9, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

20 tackles on special team, another 20 rotating as a LB, ok it’s not 50, but would still be a great surprise

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 9, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True, but Bowen has a lot of climbing to do before he gets to see the field on defense. Assuming that Buffalo does add a starting calibur linebacker in free agency he would have to jump over Ellison and DiGi for playing time and the Bills don’t really rotate linebackers like they do defensive lineman. Bowen will need a number of injuries to see any time on defense regardless of how good he looks in camp and preseason. I just can’t see it happening.

by kaisertown on Feb 9, 2009 2:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

your probably right… lets hope he has a good season on special teams to legitimize himself them

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 9, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Buffalo is going to need some players to step up and inprove if this team is going to take a big step forward next year. Here is what I think about the guys you list and some other guys who might take a big step forward:

Ace Bowen – I would be surprised if Bowen doesn’t make the team and be an active player on most, if not all, gamedays. i would be surprised if he wasn’t a good contributer on special teams. I would also be surprised if he plays any downs on defense unless multiple linebackers get hurt. It’s tough to consider a 2nd year rookie who missed his entire first season a known commodity, but if you can consider someone in that situation to be a known commodity, then Bowen is that player.

Steve Johnson – I would be surprised if Johnson isn’t a nice contributer on offense next year. I would be surprised if he lives up to what will be unrealistically lofty expectaitions laid on him by the hardcore fans heading into 09. i’ve seen way too many people talking about how Johnson will supplant Reed as a starter to think that Johnson can really outperform many fans expectations. I remember there were people predicting Hardy would catch 8 or even 10 TDs this year and just thinking that there was no way he could succeed with people thinking like that. Nationally Johnson could surprise, but on this blog he will probably be either a dissapointment or a decent 3rd reciever who everyone blames the coaches for not playing enough.

James Hardy – This is kind of the reverse situation of Johnson which makes Hardy a great candidate to beat expectations next year. If he can get pretty healthy for the regular season and be somewhat of a match-up problem in 4 WR sets and catch 15 or so balls and a few TDs then I think he will exceed the expectations of most fans and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was even a little better then that.

John McCargo – Sometimes I feel like the only guy who hasn’t given up on him yet. Was the 2007 season where he was showing flashes of being a penetrating run stuffer that long ago? If he can show up to camp in shape and healthy then I think McCargo can make some plays and be a really solid rotational DT and considering that seemingly nobody has any expectations for the guy, that would be a nice little surprise.

Jason Peters – I think a new contract, a clean bill of health and a full offseason of real NFL calibur training can coax out Peters’ full potential and he could be the true Pro Bowl LT that we all know he can/should be.

Ashton Youboty – If/when Greer walks and if/when McKelvin looks like a 2nd year player and if/when McGee misses time or starts to lose a step, I think Youboty might end up being our best cornerback next year.

Trent Edwards – I think he can be a top 10 QB next year. Statistically he is almost there already.

Robert Royal – I know he has been a huge dissapointment, but as a reserve I think he is a nice player. I think if the Bills were to switch the names and numbers on the backs of Schouman and Royal (I know they are different races too, it’s a hypothetical) and take pre-conceived beliefs on how good both players are out of the picture, then I think every Bills fan would rather have Royal on this roster than Schouman (that is after everybody found out that they had switched jerseys).

by kaisertown on Feb 7, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Royal

The things with the jerseys is funny and somewhat true. I always dog royal because I feel he is always going to fumble the ball, and he tends to drop many passes. Derek Schouman is definitely more sure handed as is Derek Fine. Also, Derek Fine is a better blocker than Royal.

I feel Royals days as a starter may be numbered in Buffalo. He is a good locker room guy so they may keep him.

I don’t think Johnson will technically “surpass” reed on the roster, but I do think Johnson may have a better year statistically.

by buffaloboy90 on Feb 8, 2009 12:17 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh there are plenty of reasons to dog Royal. I just don’t think he’s that bad. He is decent enough that if his only job is to backup Fine, then I think he can surprise some people by only sucking a little as opposed to a lot. If you ask Ron from NM, then Royal was a starter in name only during the second half of last year. Apparently Fine already received the bulk of the playing time.

Johnson will perfrom better than Reed in a number of categories next year like yards per catch, yards after catch and TDs, but I will be shocked if Johnson can catch anywhere near as many balls as Reed does. Despite missing 3 games this year and the Bills only attempting 479 passes (almost 10 less per game than Arizona) Josh Reed’s 56 catches ranked as the 36th most of any WR in the league. I think Reed and Johnson are two different types of players who could compliment each other well with Reed catching some short stuff, Johnson some intermediate stuff and Evans getting the deep balls. I still think that some people will have expectations of Johnson that are so high that he simply won’t be able to live up to them.

I can’t disagree with that. I

I like this. But where does Hardy fit in? Definitely the red zone, and I think he can be a intermediate to deep play receiver as well. Maybe not as early as next year, but I hope so. He has a 4.47 40 time so he’s not slow at all.

People seem to be cooling off on Johnson some which is good, but I think once the season gets closer and Chris Brown starts saying that he looks good in OTAs and other things then the expectations will really get crazy. We really need to get as many people on the Steve Johnson isn’t the savior of the Bills 09 offense bandwagon as possible. Here is a fanpost that Sireric very appropriately titled “since we are all homers”

http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2008/5/6/481315/since-we-are-all-homers

It’s a prediction thread for 2008 where we all tried to guess everyone’s statistics for the upcoming season and many of the predictions are out of control optimistic. Basically everyone (myself included) predicted more catches and yards for Hardy and/or Parrish then we did the incubment starter in Reed. Obviously hindsight makes us all look stupid, but I think we should all learn from that mistake and realize that Reed is this team’s number 2 WR next year. He easily earned it with his play last year and in no way will be supplanted by Johnson or any of the possible free agents out there.

I think Hardy fits in like Johnson does. He is best suited for those intermediate routes (which I think are the toughest to run). To pull those routes off you really need to be able to sell the deep route and be able to run the short routes too. I think Buffalo drafted Hardy and Johnson because those 15-25 yard completions are the thing this team lacks the most. Like you mentioned, Hardy is obviously the red zone threat that Trent needs too. When Evans is your best player at getting open 20 yards downfield and Royal is your second best player (he seriously was the second best intermediate threat on the roster in 07) you need to add some players for that specific role and Johnson and Hardy seem like OBDs solution to that problem.

So like I said before, Steve Johnson looks like he is going to surpries (and maybe be a huge surprise) nationally and maybe even amongst casual Bills fans, but this blog will probably end up either dissapointed in Johnson or pissed at the coaching staff for not playing the supposed next great NFL WR enough. So whether or not Johnson surprises really depends on what you are expecting.

Why you got to be like that? No problem dogging us, but not the Bills coaches? I am sure if that is the only thing the Bills coaches screw up, I will be more than happy.

I’m seeing a scary trend in most fans… and i’ll admit i’m sometimes guilty of it too, especially after the start we had this year… it’s called UNREALISTIC OPTIMISM. and it can be a fan’s worst enemy. that being said i do think Johnson wil surprise a lot of ppl. Go bills

by CanadianBillsFan on Feb 8, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

actually

i’ve always been an optimist and I would say that after the start this year and then the collapse I am far more of a realist about the Bills now than I was last off-season. Starting 5-1 and finishing 7-9 crushed what little bit of boy fanhood I had left in me. You know, that small part of you that still wants to believe every year can be your year like when you were 10 years old? Well last season essentially kicked my inner 10 year old self in the teeth. Now the 90% adult fan part of me is telling that boy to shut up and go sit in the corner in 2009 until hes thought about what hes done.
