Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

As much as Chad Pennington would love to have former Jets teammate Laveranues Coles in Miami, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

According to an NFL source, the Dolphins don’t perceive Coles as the No. 1 receiver they’ve been seeking and aren’t likely to pursue him in free agency.

Buffalo seems to be a better fit for Coles, where he would complement a true No. 1 guy in Lee Evans. Coles visited Buffalo Friday but there has been no more talk of visits since then. Calls to his agent, Roosevelt Barnes, on Sunday went to voice mail and were not returned.

Sounds pretty promising.

I must say that as much as I really would love for this to go down, I think the main reason is so that some Bills fans will take a big step away from the cliff after hearing this.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

want. coles’s 7 td’s last year seem to indicate an ability to find space in the endzone. even without size, he seems like a capable red zone threat, and hopefully still has something left in the tank..

doesn't buy posluzny.

Well, three of those came in one blowout win over Arizona, so take the total for what it’s worth.

We could have used those TD's when we played AZ

7 TDs is 7 TDs. He would be great pickup for the Bills who are desperate for someone with a nose for the endzone. I just hope that they won’t have to pay too much. That is unlikely since the Bills have to out-spend other teams to attract free agents.

As a counter-point:

Look at all the yardage Freddy Jackson piled up in the season finale. Does that make his numbers look any worse?

Even with the lack of size, outside of Larry Fitzgerald, Coles is probably the best I have seen at timing the jump ball. He is a beast at fade routes.

I forget you’ve probably seen a lot of him living where you are (somewhere close to the city, correct?).

Was/is he considered a good team guy? Does he get your blessing to come here?

by krytime on Mar 1, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

Wasn’t Coles one of the chief malcontents in the Mangini regieme? Not that that’s necessarily an indication of a problem as Mangini seems to have kicked over a hornets nest in Cleveland…

by Ron From NM on Mar 1, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

To Kry: I’m about half way between NYC and Albany so I get to see mainly Jets games on Sunday. Yes he has my blessing. Coles has always been a gritty hard nosed player.

To Ron: I don’t remember anything specifically (not saying he wasn’t, just that I don’t recall) Coles ever being a major malcontent or a problem. I think the only time I remember him being upset is when the Jets dumped his buddy Chad in favor of Favre, and in that case he was probably right.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Mar 1, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Always a consistent fantasy football producer

I have had him two different times and he always is fairly dependable for catches (especially when he was paired with Pennington). He gets TDs in bunches but at least he actually gets TDs unlike the other Bills receivers. His fantasy outlook will take a major hit coming to the Bills who are known as a fantasy abyss.

by Long Beach Bills Fan on Mar 1, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

He also complained that the team wasn't treating their vets fairly

Now, he had a reason as it seems Tannebaum and Mangini have a history of promising things to players for the offseason like new contracts for outplaying their old ones and then backing off. The icing on the cake for him though was obviously the Chad getting canned for Farve situation. I don’t view him as a malcontent, I view him as an extremely loyal player who is not afraid to say whats on his mind.

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

I saw a headline on PFT that read, “Cole to Hawks”. I groaned before re-reading it and seeing it was Cole (DT) and not Coles (WR). Wasn’t there something yesterday or the day before about the Dolphins having lukewarm interest in Coles?

Also, let’s hope the bit about calls to Coles’ agent going to voicemail refers to The Daily Dolphin and not OBD. It would really suck for Coles to pull a Peters and start with the silent treatment before he’s even on the team….

ron, I read the same damn thing and panicked! I hope we can land him. He is good at jump balls in the red zone which is why I want him. he is a tough SOB as I’ve said numerous times and I think Lee Evans can be so much better with the added competition of a Coles. Plus, add in a rookie pass catching TE and this offense will finally have the pieces in place to actually be a top 15 offense instead of a bottom 5-8

coles would be perfect fit

hes 5"11 almost 200 but plays a lot bigger and the important thing is hes still only 31 and has averaged more than 60 catches a year with about 5 tds a year for the past 8 years. Hed be the perfect #2 and give Hardy 2-3 years to develop or end up a bust. Also, this signing gives us much more flexibility in the draft along with the hangartner signing. He still has speed obviously not as much as when he was 25 but good speed decent size, good leaper, and fearless over the middle. I dont know what more you want in a #2 wr. Its worth overpaying a little on hopefully a 3 year deal.

but if we can swing a deal where we only give up one pick, lets say out thinrd, then I wouldn’t object at all. especially since it takes a need off the team’s chart and allows us to draft the best player available in the second round as opposed to only concentrate on a center or guard

Simple economics..

Coles was so emotional when Pennington got shafted out of NY that Parcells probably figures that he has the inside leverage here.. Coles should think of the fact that they also drafted Henne and Pennington’s rule of slimy fish nation might not be for much more than next year!

yeah

but I think the whole Key to Evans is right now he is doubled over the top pretty much ALL THE TIME….adding a legit #2 that can get open and catch balls would allow Evans to see single coverage more than a the 2-3 x a game he does now and maybe bump that up to 4-6 x a game…..Trent gets his chances to hit Lee but the MORE chances he gets, the GREATER THOSE deep balls start actually happening

MARVelous

by MARVelous on Mar 1, 2009 4:23 PM EST reply actions

If we get him, TE gets bumped a whole lot further down the list

Coles would accomplish just as much as drafting a rookie. Especially if we go 3 wide most of the time. I think Fine would catch a lot more balls with Coles here, plus he and Schouman block just fine. Signing Coles makes a lot more sense than just drafting a TE. Especially a 1st round TE. How much impact does a rookie TE really have anyway?

A concept

Well—this is just an idea—NOTHING from anybody I know at OBD. Call it a concept.

If we were to get Coles who I think is the perfect #2 and compliment to Lee—we now can finally move Reed back to the slot where he was born to play. Does this not make Roscoe a luxury we really can’t afford?

Every time we play the Pats they rave about our ST and return ability—-what if we called Pioli and said if they want to dump Waters so bad, let’s start with Roscoe, and maybe a #4 or #5.

I think Waters has only two years left on a long deal and his contract probably would have to be done over. It would seem to me that if we add Coles and redo Peters, even forgetting Greer for the moment, we’re going to have to shed some salary to do Waters.

As much as we all admire Roscoe’s game-changing ability, with the arrival of Leodis, I’d far prefer to have a pro-bowl LG—but do NOT want to give up a #3 and #5. He isn after all—32.

exactly my line of thinking G.

The Chiefs guys are saying a 2nd rounder, which I thought silly, and when I brought up Parrish they seemed to think he wasn’t an option.

I think (especially if Coles gets signed) that Roscoe and a 4th is more than adequate compensation.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

by sireric on Mar 1, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

I’m in total agreement of this concept, and have been somewhat pining for it the moment I heard Coles was talking with the Bills. That is of course, with reference to Roscoe. Salary and cap wise, it wouldn’t make sense to keep him.

Now, trying to move him to KC is an interesting suggestion.

by krytime on Mar 1, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Very cool idea, Geronimo

I think I like it even better than the Daniels idea I floated earlier. If Waters is going to be a problem the Chiefs might get what they can for him now rather than let him walk when he becomes a free agent.

interesting

I am just so glad they are focused on upgrading this anemic offense….Trent with an addition of Coles and possibly Waters is an exciting prospect

I would prefer McKelvin to do punts as well but as a full time KR and CB he couldn’t do that. If we threw in Parrish I suppose I could live with it, although I hate to give up that elite PR ability

But having an interior line of Waters, Hangartner and Butler would do wonders for that running game!

by Dime on Mar 1, 2009 7:47 PM EST reply actions

Can I quote you on that?

by Zumone on Mar 1, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know why you'd want to.

But it wasn’t an investigative report. It was the weekend sports reporter saying something like “supposedly WR Laveranues Coles has narrowed his choices down the the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. He attended college in Florida so there’s a chance he doesn’t want to come to this cold.” There was no mention of contacting the Bills, the Dolphins, Coles, his agent or even the I need tickets guy on Southwestern for comment. Hell, it was followed up by Rachel Barnhart saying sure is a lot of Bills news this offseason and him agreeing. If it was an investigative report he did a really poor job of letting everyone know that he investigated it.

Sounds like Housh can't make his mind up either

Palmer calling him to stay. MN and Seattle make strong plays for him. He said that he wanted to make a decision by Sunday night. Well that has turned into him “Sleeping on it” until Monday or later. Coles and his agent probably figure he should get someting just under TJ’s value.

by Joe P. on Mar 1, 2009 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Coles is another PANDA ALERT

If he was happy with the Bills offer, he wouldn’t have left town last Friday. He probably thinks he is worth more than what the Bills have offered so he’ll probably take less from some other team that will swoop in, even if it is Cincy. Does our passing game scare that many WR’s from wanting to play here?

by dabillsr1 on Mar 1, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Won’t happen. Buffalo’s going to pull their offer, perhaps as soon as tomorrow, so that they don’t get leveraged into more money. They won’t overspend for Coles. The only reason Panda dragged on is because it was a mid-range contract, and the offer being out there wasn’t inhibiting the team from doing other things (they’d already gotten Mitchell, Stroud and Johnson at that point).

That's good news to hear

Thanks for calming us so we don’t have to have the “Alert watch” going on for days. Makes sense that the team (IMO) is far from done in FA knowing the holes still left on our roster.

Next question becomes what do they do next? Guard, LB, TE, DE, and who will be the next WR option they will try to lure in.

Do they have a trade or two up their sleeves (that would shock most fans and give them some indication they are really trying to improve our team).

Believe it or not, there are a lot of fast “receivers” that have trouble catching the ball. I’m glad Lee Evans isn’t one of them. Evans just needs to work the middle of the field better, create after the catch, and become more of a difference-maker.

Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

by Fort Worth on Mar 1, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

I dont see Evans on the link?

Just Lynch and freakin Royal representing the Bills.

by Dime on Mar 1, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

The last year before this year. Unfortunately iWon doesn’t keep those up. Evans was up in the top 10.

by twoeightnine on Mar 1, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

1. I’ve watched Evans catch for years. He has excellent hands. Great hand strength.
2. Compared to his number of receptions, I don’t think that 5 or 6 drops are a lot.
3. I don’t even see Evans’ name on the list in the link that you provided.

Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

by Fort Worth on Mar 1, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Last year, not this year.

5 or 6 out of 55 is well above average. Not as bad as Royal or Lynch but not what you want out of a number 1 unless he’s hauling in 80+ passes.

by twoeightnine on Mar 1, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

What about for other years, or better yet, Evans' entire career?

One time is an aberration, two times is a pattern, three times is a problem.

Well...

as of week one he had 2. And I remember at least one or two in the last couple of weeks. So I’d say he was in the 4-5 range again by the end of the year.

For Pete’s sake Joe, put down the kool-aid and step away from the ledge.

If Coles didn’t want to play here why would he come here for a visit for 2days?

If all he was doing is using Buffalo to drive up his price then he could have simply stopped in for a few hours and left town ASAP.

They made him a very good offer and he is seriously considering taking it if nobody else will match it. Of course this is my opinion only. Sorry I can’t remember the posts, but I think it was someone here who said the Bills have made the highest offer. By the way, I am relaxed.

I guess what I’m saying is that just because he hasn’t signed with the Bills today or even tomorrow or the next day, doesn’t mean that he isn’t going to sign here, never wanted to sign here, or has not intention of signing here. Just give it some time before jumping to conclusions.

not necessarily at receiver

I hope that Hardy and Steve Johnson will ready to go in two years, Coles can tide us over and remember, the coaching staff needs to win this year

If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.

I think that Johnson will surprise and be more productive this year. I hope they use him and reed in the slot. He blocks really well plus he’s a big possession receiver, I think that he will eventually replace Reed in the slot, while Hardy would be sprinkled in once and a while and would be Coles replacement down the line.

your thinking too far ahead while forgetting the developping talent that we alreade have.

Cole would be a great fit RIGHT NOW, which is what we need. plus he can help our develloping wr’s, Hardy and Johnson, so that they can ba ready to fill his spot in 2-3 years. Coles is a great fit because he would be a solid contributor right now and help plan for the future.
