New Guard
I've heard this rumor? a couple of times in the past few days and wanted to check in and see if anyone else had heard it also. In the Dick Jauron press conferance he said that they had worked Demetrius Bell at guard all last year in practice and not at tackle. Anyone else hear this and what do you all think of this idea? Can you imagine him next to Jason Peters with his size and his athletic ability to pull (basketball backround).

eh
As long as we finally get somebody, who can actually run-block. Dockery never utilized his 330 pound frame as a run-blocker, it would be great – as mentioned – if we finally could get a guy in there at LG to create some running lames for Marshawn and Fred.
To me, we draft the best DE available at the 11th spot, then pay close attention to Duke Robinson, and if he’s there in the second round, we grab him.
Then we would’ve strengthened both our lines, and we would then in the third round look for guys like Shawn Nelson, James Casey, Chase Coffman, Cornelius Ingram or Travis Beckum, who could all make our offense even better.
NB: For this plan to actually realistically take plays, we would have to sign a guy like Cato June in FA, and thereby only have DE, OLB, TE (and possibly SS) as ‘big’ needs.

Did he really say that Bell didn’t get any reps at tackle? I would fully expect him to get reps at both guard and tackle. Usually backup OLmen practice at every position that they could realistically play.
I think Bell’s athletic ability makes him a better fit as a tackle then guard, but if he can beat out Chambers or whoever else and start at guard, then I’m fine with it.

Yeah, no, Jauron said he got reps in both spots. They like him better at tackle. He’ll stay at tackle.

Watch for this development
Bears released LG Terrence Metcalf
Played for DJ
Could start and allow Bell or 2009 draftee to develop.
6’4" 310 lb mauler/road grader
2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 68 | Key
Alert: None
Comment: Metcalf is a six-year veteran who has great power and strength at the point of attack. He is a short, powerfully-built player with a low center of gravity. He works with effective pad level to engage defenders well initially off the line of scrimmage, while working his feet to get movement. He has heavy hands to deliver a punch and can stymie defenders early in the play. He can anchor well versus powerful bull rushers or clog up interior gaps with his natural girth and hand use. He is a solid technician who takes good angles and understands leverage and body positioning. Metcalf has good quickness and balance in a limited area, but does show some effectiveness on the second level. He isn’t great in space, but once engaged often finishes well. He is an instinctive player who reacts to stunts and blitzes. He can pinball defenders in a limited area. He is a versatile player because he has also played the center position during his career. However, he tends to get lazy at times when he is tired and loses his base, but most often he gives great effort and is a solid football player.

Lost his starting job last year to injury...
Also had a four game suspension… I would say it’s a possibility but I dunno if he is “the answer”.

Do we know why he was suspended?
What was the injury?

knee injury is all I know.
And the suspension was “not due to steroids” according to him but rather for using a banned diuretic or masking agent.
And for what it’s worth the guys at Windy City Gridiron weren’t high on him before his injury.

Well, if the knee is fully rehabed, I would bring him in for a look.

Opinions:
I think—-I know he’s been worked at both positions and that he’s progressed and that he will deffinitly be used as depth at both positions depending on the need.

Who knows,
Bell could be developing beyond expectations, a la Brad Butler….any key developments, maybe another vet and a good draft of one or two good OL propects and I think we are good this year…I expect good things, and if DJ and his crew have made soem mistakes getting talent on the line with Dock and Fowler, don’t expect the same mistakes twice. i don’t have much to back this up, but it it was i expect and hope for. Demetrious Bell
I’m afraid you may be overrated Bell simply because he played basketball. I know everyone thinks X basketball players are just amazing because Antonio Gates has done well, but lets not jump the gun.
Bell doesn’t have the size and strength of Peters. If Bell was any good last year the Bills would probably have worked him in to that incredibly mediocre center rotation. I think two very good if not best options for the Bills at Guard would be Alex Mack in round one or Duke Robinson in round 1.

Bell can't play center.
He worked all offseason, all season, and this offseason to improve. The fact that he was on the roster is impressive. He will probably be a depth player this year.
Mack and Robinson won’t be the number one picks. One may be the second rounder.

The fact of the matter is that you don’t know what the Bills will do on draft day. They could very well trade down and snag one of those players late in the first round or the could take one of them with the 11th pick. With the way everyone’s draft boards have been moving on this site and every other site on the web I don’t think anyone knows where players will go.
I don’t think you can just declare that the Bills won’t draft Mack or Robinson with their first pick. It is a definite probability considering the vacancy at LG. You are entitled to your opinion Matt, but I just disagree. Weren’t you one of the people who wanted Mack in the first round a couple months ago? funny how those things change…

Probability?
You’re not going to find a bigger advocate for taking an offensive lineman early. Even I don’t see it as a ‘probability’. In fact, recent early round draft history (traded, Parrish/Whitner, McCargo/Lynch, Poz/McKelvin, Hardy) suggests that Buffalo won’t be inclined to make me a giddy, giddy man on the first day of the draft.
As much as I (and possibly Matt) want to see Buffalo take an offensive lineman in the first two rounds it seems more likely at this point that Buffalo will go with either a DE or LB.
by Ron From NM on Mar 12, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've never been an advocate for Mack at 11.
If they traded down in the first round the preference would probably be LB/Pettigrew/OG. That’s just where I think their draft preference would lie based on some intel. That’s why it’s much much much more likely that our second-rounder is an OG. LB/DE in round 1, LB/DE/OG round 2 is what I think will probably happen, just like Ron.

Ron have some faith
I think if center/guard is not a second round pick its because we traded for Waters. Robinson or Mack has to be the pick at 43, one will be there

former basketball players
When speaking of Antonio Gates in regard to his being a former basketball player, don’t forget that Tony Gonzalez and Julius Peppers also played college basketball- not a bad representation!

Free Agents
- Why is it that our free agents turn out to be better than most of our draft choices on the offensive line, or free agents? Bell and Peters and Chambers are all better than Preston, Fowler, etc.!
by BuffaloWhiner on Mar 13, 2009 9:01 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Bell was a draft pick and
peters was an undrafted free agent pick up which is basically the same as an"8th" round draft pick. i’m not sure but I think preston was one of their draft picks also.
by jimkutica on Mar 13, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Chambers was a fifth round pick who spent a few years with Cleveland before landing in Buffalo, so he is an UFA just like Fowler and everyone else was.
Bell, Butler and Preston were drafted.
Peters is the only undrafted offensive lineman who was on the roster last year.
Fowler, Whittle, Dockery, Walker and Chambers were UFAs.
I’m not seeing the correlation.
by kaisertown on Mar 13, 2009 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe what you’re saying is that it’s odd that low-round and undrafted players are better than high-round draft picks? But Buffalo has only drafted one OL in the top two rounds in the past 10 years, so there’s just not that much to compare to.
And there are plenty of 5th-7th round draft picks that have been “busts” – Pennington, Merz, Geisinger, McFarland, Sobieski, Pucillo… If you draft enough, one (Brad Butler) will be good.

All good with D Bell here. I just hope we get a deal with Peters. As much as I am not thrilled with his greed, or his comments about how getting to the Pro Bowl is what is it all about we don’t need to make another hole on our O Line. We need to give Trent some time to throw otherwise we will have TO complaining all heck will break loose.

Keep Trent off his back and you've got a chance
Talking with a coworker about Brady and his comeback and the fact that New England traded Cassell.
Prior to his injury, when Brady faced a rush, from us or anybody else, he was a very ordinary QB. With a repaired knee, he’s likely a little slower and less mobile.
Trent is very much the same, though I’m not comparing the two. Brady was All World. Trent is very much an unknown at this point.
The issue being you’be got to have a monster line with an attitude in the NFL. I don’t care if Bell played badminton and came out of Pop Warner football in Round 16. We have to have guys who can keep Trent off his back. Without that, we’re another season away from even getting into the playoffs.

I think the Pats are the worst example anyone can find of the importance of a pass blocking OL. Brady and the Pats were in the bottom of the league in sacks allowed every season until he got hurt. And then with almost exactly the same OL, Matt Cassel was sacked more than any QB in the league.
Edwards was sacked 23 times on 310 pass plays (7.4% of the time)
Losman was sacked 15 times on 116 pass plays (12.9% of the time)
Was the OL worse with Losman or does Losman just stink at avoiding getting hit? I do agree that you need a good OL, but how many guards allow more than a few sacks a season when their QB knows how to get out of the way?
