Good news on Angelo Crowell
Just saw this on rotoworld, headline reads:
There is no way that I want to go into the season with Keith Ellison as starting SLB, Crowell is a far superior athlete. Whatever it is between him and Jauron, they better settle it. I would love to re-sign Crowell as he is clearly superior to any of the FAs available.
Quick poll!
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

wow
i’m surprised they are even talking….but it appears no one wants Crowell…..except maybe the Bucs….I’d gladly take Crowell on a 1 year deal…..it fills a need and if we draft a guy like Matthews, we can use that guy as a blitzer and in situational downs only instead of asking a rookie to come in and start

You missed the part where Crowell and the Bucs are negotiating right now. I’m guessing that he’ll be a Buccaneer by the end of the weekend.

So the meeting with Buffalo is just window dressing for the Bucs?
I can see that, though I can also see him trying to re-sign with Buffalo if he’s getting low-balled everywhere.
Didn't miss it

i know
they are negotiating but he has a meeting set up on monday with the Bills so obviously there has been dialogue….i’m guessing the bucs will say if Crowell goes to that meeting in Buffalo, his contract with the Bucs is off the table….but if you are to tell me my options are
1) Keith Ellison
2) Rookie LB
3) Crowell + Rookie LB
I’m taking the insurance policy of option #3 every time and twice on Sundays
MARVelous - "I went from America's team to North America's Team" Terrell Owens
#3!!
Your 3rd option is definitely my favorite. I have said it around here in other forums and I will say it again here: NO WAY do I want Keith Ellison to open the season (or even training camp) with a starting job. I think they should put last year behind them and give Crowell a shot at his old job. Ellison and a drafted rookie can compete with him in camp and help to raise the level of play at that position. Knowing that he was going to be a free agent I’m sure he worked extremely hard to rehab his knee so that he would be ready to show potential suitors what he could do. He already the knows the Bills personnel and system so a return to Buffalo makes the most sense for both sides. I just hope they all realize it and neither side gets too greedy.

We drafted Bowen last year.
Maybe he replaces the “Drafted Rookie” since we have no idea what he brings to the table. Just throin that out there.

That Would Be Nice
Bowen was a tackling machine at Iowa St. and I would love to see him translate that to the pro-level. His serious knee injury last year is a major question mark right now. Hopefully he worked really hard in the meeting and film room so that his development wasn’t slowed down too much. That being said, there is no substitute for running the plays in practice and executing on the field.
I think 1 player among Crowell, June or Keiaho will be signed by the bills and that they will still look to strengthen their LB corps with a mid-late round draft pick.

I would like him back
I think if he comes back on Monday for the meeting the Bucs offer isn’t off the table, but he probably isn’t getting much in way of $$$’s as he figured he might, his surgery is still in question, but he had his best year in 2007 with 126 tackles, which is more than any LB on the roster last year. His work ethic has come into question, but he is perhaps worth a second chance, and maybe our not yet signing a linebacker is due to our interest in Crowell still being on this team. I too was excited about our corps with him last year, and would gladly have Crow back if h is ready and in shape
The Bills CAN win every game
maybe our not yet signing a linebacker is due to our interest in Crowell still being on this team.
IF they had interest in Crowell wouldn’t they have brought him in at some point? I think they look at Crowell and Crowell looks at us and says “It could be worse…”

We are planning on meeting w/ him so there must be some interest
Did it every cross your mind that we could be playing the waiting game here to see what type of interest would be shown for him around the league, and to find out what type of value he has by any contract offers he would’ve received. Crowell i’m sure probably also wanted to see what his value around the league is, but at the end of the day i think crowell is more important to this team than any in the NFL.
They must be really good at playing the waiting game.
The contract offers he’s getting are probably just above or at the league vet minimum. People here, including me, really like Crowell. That being said, most people around the league don’t and most people at OBD don’t.

Whats the vet minimum?
Cause if thats all teams are offering him, we should take a serious, long look at resigning Crowell, if for nothing else but a 1 year contract, in order to fill one of our holes.
I know that OBD isn’t fond of him, but they must also realise that he is the best OLB FA left. I would hope that they are able to put their differences aside and realize that it’s a good fit.

I think it's somewhere between 600k and 850k.
I looked but can’t seem to find the exact figures for the 2009 season.
If they offered him that with a bunch of incentives, I’d be happy.

For Crowell it is 605K. And your right that he won’t get much more than that in base salary. He will probably get like 100K in signing bonus money (maybe more if the contract is for 2-3 seasons) and a few playing time based incentives that could probably push the contract up a good amount.
http://proathletesonly.com/news/front-office/nfl-minimum-salaries-for-2008-2012-seasons/
I say give him 850K with a 150K signing bonus, 1 year contract
Cheaply plugs a big hole in the D with a playmaker that knows our system, plus it’s probably the best offer he’s gotten by far, so I think he’d take it rather quickly.

You need to remeber that 2007 was without Stroud and many of Crowell’s tackles were well downfield. I do like Crowell but at this point, not knowing if his knee is fixed, history of discord with the coaching staff (not placing blame), he would have to be a bargain. I just wouldn’t want to invest much in a potential health problem or a red headed step child that is going to be on someones short list.
YES!!!!!!!!!!
Let’s be honest ppl, Crowell is the best OLB left in FA. and if it allows us to take off a need before the draft, then sign him. Happy to see the possibility of both Crowell and OBD putting their differences aside.
by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 13, 2009 8:01 PM EDT reply actions
Maybe not the best one left.....
It’s been reported that Julian Peterson of the Seahawks has refused a pay cut. That being said, it seems like he “could” be cut so they can save some money. If that happens, I say forget Crowell and lets go get one of the best all around OLB"s in the game. This guy can cover TE’s, play with his hand down or stand up. He can do it all. This guy would be an awesome addition to the Bills.

I posted that before Peterson said he wont take a cut
and until he actually gets released by the Seahawks (which i don’t see happening) Crowell remains the best available OLB.

canadian bills fan i totally agree with you. crowell is the best fa olb left in my opinion. he has played in the system both as a starting lb (so he understands the defence) and an outstanding special teams player. if he checks out as healthly then whats wrong with having crowell, poz, and mitchell as our linebackers?
The more I think about it...
I don’t think Buffalo will re-sign Crowell even if the Bucs misfire with him. Jauron seems content with how his defense performed last season (i.e. good enough to win games). I doubt Buffalo will want to shell out the kind of money Crowell wants based on his past production, considering our defense was “fine” with Ellison manning the strong side. It makes more sense for the Bills to draft a guy or bring in a less pricey free agent.
In a perfect world we’ll land Rey Maualuga and have one of the baddest group of LBs in the NFL.
"I don't agree with a damn thing you say, but I would die for your right to say it."
In a perfect world, we’d draft/have a deffencive line that wouldn’t force the linebakers the be the principale sorce of pressure and sacks.
Maualuga is great, i really love the kid, but he’s not the answer to our deffence’s need until we get pass ruching DE’s

Jauron’s defense wasn’t good enough to win 9 games. It’s as simple as that.

That's only half the story
when you consider how bad the offense was… so the D deserves a little more dap.

not to mention
that other than the Arizona catastrophe the bills d only allowed at most 13 more points than their offense scored… With the addition of TO the O should b a lot more powerful. TO should bring in at least another TD per game (going on an average of his career about 10.69 tds per season). So that deficit is reduced by 7 (so 6 point deficit now). The puts the team within 1 TD or FG, depending on the game, making it a completely different scenario. We win both the Cleveland and second Jets game and we put the San Fransisco game into OT. Not to mention that 3 games were decided by less than 10 points but more than 3. So with TO’s average production rate that puts the bills within 3 or less points of winning. Grant it this is average and TO’s TDs are not equally distributed throughout the season, but it still makes for an interesting thought. I believe it was Terrence McGee (I maybe wrong) that said the Bills D is better now because of TO. It is very true. Are my assumptions right on? no. teams will control the ball differently and what not. But it is still a point to be considered none the less.
I wouldn’t say the Ravens had an exceptional offense, yet that D took the team further than anyone thought they might go for most of the year. Truly not comparable defenses, but I think the offenses were comparable.

You're over-simplifying things....
There’s so much more that goes into a team’s success than “Baltimore’s D carried them.” The defense kept them in games, and so did their ball-control offense. The Bills D kept us in the vast majority of our games, so I agree with DJ in that the defense is fine. As long as we don’t lose any major pieces (which we haven’t), the defense should keep us in games next season, too. You fix the offense, and voila! The Bills are a playoff team next season.
I mean think about it, if we could have mustered ANY kind of offense against SF or NE, then the Bills are a very different 9-7 rather than 7-9.

There is also Crowell's handling of his injury last year
which didn’t sit well with Jauron, and probably not with Fewell or the linebackers coach or Wilson…
His knee might be absolutely fine (questionable, but possible). The deal is he is preceived, rightly or wrongly, as having screwed the team by going through all the OTA’s , mini-camp, and preseason, and then, on the eve of the regular season, deciding to sit it out. At that point, the Bills had zero good options for replacing him.
That kind of disregard for your team doesn’t sit well. I can’t see a guy like Jauron welcoming him back, though the guy’s got talent and could help us. I’d sign him for the veteran minimum for a year and make darn sure you had a viable backup absolutely chomping at the bit to get in there at the slightest sign that Cro can’t go 100%. Cro’s got a lot to prove to this team and this staff, and I don’t see Jauron buying it… or even liking him on the roster. He’s got his hands full already with T.O.

Well I don't know what Crowell thinks he's worth...
but the market is telling him it’s “very little”. Crowell’s contract will likely be around 1M per with incentives. That’s not as cheap as a non-first round draft pick but it’s certainly cheap.

Bring him back
because he knows the scheme and the guys. Question is does he work harder now? Will he be looked at weird by Mitchell and others? If he doesn’t fit the mold, don’t break it. Otherwise, bring him back as soon as possible.
The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.
Hold the press !!!!
Julian Peterson might get cut!
Just call him Mr. Sack! He has 24.5 sacks in the last three years and 9 forced fumbles 14 passes defensed and 3 INTs. All this in a 4-3 system. I could definitely see how he could be a great addition to our team!

I think we all learned the hard way to wait until the player is a FA before we get our hopes up (Suggs, Peppers, Dansby). IF he does get cut, then I’d make him an imidiate target. But I wont get excited about it until it actually happens.

true enough
but we do have the money to get it done, hes still only 30 and he’s average 5.1 sacks per year in his career and thats counting seasons in San Fran where he wasn’t utilized as a blitzer as effectively as in Seattle. Where the last three years he has 10, 9.5 and 5 sacks.
Ok, I’m clearly not helping the don’t get ahead of yourself cause but if we sign him that increases the odds of going DE with 11

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but if Peterson does become available, I make him a (reasonable) godfather offer. Screw the Rams, we need him more, and we’re much more likely to be sucessfull than the rams.

My though was to offer something to SEA to prevent him from getting cut! He’s signed until 2012, so it’s feasible that we could simply extend him and lessen the cap hit a bit.

What is the point?
Crowell has yet to even practice on his surgically repaired knee. From what I read, he can’t practice until after the draft….That is a huge question mark, wouldnt you say???
I think it would be a big risk if we did sign him and assumed he would just be back to his old football playing self. I think we still need to sign a healthy, proven LB, either FA or via the draft, and let those 2 compete in TC and give the best man the position.
Again, I personally despise the selfish decision he made last season, but I want the Bills to win, and if he helps, then squash the beef and lets play.

Replacement
I think the replacement for Crowell would be USC linebacker Clay Matthews in the first round.
Re-sign Crowell for a decent offer
i think would be a win-win for both parties. If we add a LB in the draft (or 2) that would just strengthen our LB core where Crowell would not have to push to get back to full strength.

What is the word on Crowell?
I say sign the guy. He’s in the prime of his career. He is well rested. His surgury usually isnt career threatening. He knows our system, players, and coaches. Sign this guy if we still have the chance. Spend your draft picks on areas like DE, TE, G etc…
