A Draft History and Review
Since the draft seems to be such a crap shoot, I decided to take a gander at how the Bills stack up to other franchises over the past few years (starting in 2002-2007). I only checked the first three rounds for each team over the past 6 years (I've only got so much time on my hands). The 2008 draft class will be omitted for obvious reasons. I graded each year with a hindsight approach and y'all can be the judges to determine which franchises/coaches historically do the best on the first day of the draft. It's a graduated scale: teams are penalized more for missing in the 1st round than in the 2nd or 3rd. Players that cannot be graded do not count against a team, they are marked "NC." It works out just like real life: anything below a B just kills your GPA. This is not academia, however, so it is all subjective and open for debate... enjoy. I actually had to do this in bits and pieces.

If there's something I learned from this exercise.... it is you MUST nail the 1st round. If you miss on a 1st rounder it really hinders your franchise from improving in the short AND long-term. Imagine if Buffalo had scored on Mike Williams and JP Losman... the Bills would be significantly better if just those 2 players panned out. Keep in mind these grades are for the "1st day" only, and a lot of teams make their living on the 2nd day. One thing I have been happy with Jauron and Co. about is they rarely miss in the 1st round (I barely count McCargo as a 1st rouder).
The top Day 1 drafters over the past 5 years or so have been the Panthers, Giants, Redskins, Colts, Jags, Steelers, and Chargers. The Bills did their best work in that time frame under DJ and made a killing on Day 2 picks. The Redskins made excellent picks when they had picks. The Steelers and the Colts were easily the 2 best drafters and it's no surprise those are 2 of the most successful franchises this century.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Great Effort
Thanks a Million. With all that you’ve learned from this research, who would you take in the 1st 3 rounds this year if you were the Bills?
The World's Greatest Heroes are Always Unsung
After checking all of this out
I found that teams that made safe picks graded out the best. The safest 3 picks for Buffalo this year IMO are
Round 1: Rey Maualuga
Round 2: William Moore (a), Duke Robinson (b), Alex Mack ©
Round 3: Chase Coffman (a), Fili Moala (b), Lawrence Sidbury ©
I had to give some options in Rds 2 & 3 because you just never know of the availability of guys. All of these players will be starters in the NFL sometime, Sidbury is the only questionable one in that regard… he’s the highest risk. Any combination of three of these players is an AWESOME draft.

I briefly scanned this
I have some slight issues with this, but I will just give one example:
How do the Raiders get a D+ in 2007 for JaMarcus Russell, Zach Miller, Quentin Moses, but the Titans get a B in 2006 for Vince Young, LenDale White?
To me Russell and Young at the very least cancel each other out, but I would give a slight edge to Russell. Lendale White has been very good for the Titans but Miller has been pretty good for the Raiders, edge White. Moses did nothing for the Raiders. I would have to at least give the Raiders a C+.
Maybe I’m being picky and you can tell me to knock it off.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Well....
Vince Young is not the best QB in the league, but he was productive and he was a winner… he helped the organization and so has LenDale White, particularly last season.
JaMarcus Russell has had horrible production, shown little progression, and has very few victories. The Raiders were a competitive team last season, imagine if Vince Young was leading them…. they probably would have had a few more victories with what he brings to the table. Zach Miller is a nice player but not nice enough to save the Raiders from a horrible decision in Russell, and Quentin Moses did not even make the Raiders’ roster as a 3rd round pick.
So, for a more detailed breakdown of my thought process:
JaMarcus Russell starts them out with a D, Zach Miller bumps it to a C-, and Quentin Moses brings them back down to a D+…. because that’s ridiculous when a 3rd rounder doesn’t even make it out of camp.
And be picky all you want, it’s totally subjective and debatable.

Isn't Vince Young the guy who cracked under the pressure and may or may not have attempted to kill himself?
Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'... but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'? Where's that extra penny going to?
I think you're referring to T.O.

Vince Young was a starter, then as Joe said, cracked under pressure. He is also no longer the starter. Yes he gave them wins but he was also on a much better team the Russell has with the Raiders. Russell flashes big play potential and while he is nowhere near an elite (or even above average QB) he is still young and has potential. He also still has a starting job which is something that Young cannot claim. I will stand on the C+ grade I gave them.
You are right about Moses, to have a 3rd rounder get cut in camp is a sick joke.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
So if...
the Raiders had Kerry Collins do you think Russell would still be starting? And I don’t think the talent level that Young and Russell were dealing with were all that much different… both have underwhelming receiving corps and strong running games. The difference is Vince Young can elevate an offense with his athleticism, Russell can’t…. that is really the only difference between these two QBs because they are both dumb as a box of rocks and couldn’t read an NFL defense to save their lives.

Russell has a much better arm, and the few times I have seen him play, (vs. the Bills and vs. the Jets last year) he looked like a developing QB to me. He has a long way to go, but at this point, I would put Russell ahead of Young. Would Russell be starting if the Raiders had Collins? Maybe, they don’t have anywhere to go so they might as well start the kid and let him learn.
because they are both dumb as a box of rocks and couldn’t read an NFL defense to save their lives.
Agree completely, they are both beefier versions of Mike Vick IMHO.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
You're crazy
if you put Russell ahead of Young…. I don’t even know what to say to that.

I said only slightly.
But still, Young is a headcase who couldn’t handle some boos. he got all depressed and couldn’t handle the pressure. Even if you want to say that Young is a better player the fact that he completely crumbled under the pressure has to drag him down.
If I had to choose I would take Russell, because he doesn’t quit and turn into a whiner who tries to off himself.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
Pittsburgh
looks like they have one heck of a scouting department.
To be fair, the 1st four years you list were during the Tommy D era. I think the Bills have gotten a little better since then (how could they not?). They still have a ways to go to dig out of the hole Donahoe put them in…
Get the Bills back to the big game!
I think that’s why Ralph went after Donahoe. That backfired.

Agree
I have no qualms with just about any of the Bills picks under Jauron… McCargo is the only sore spot. But DJ and Modrak impress me the most with what they do on the 2nd day. If fans are patient enough with Jauron he’ll ultimately build an excellent roster top-to-bottom… look at all the residual talent he left Lovie Smith with in Chicago.

Agree
i think the Bills have done well with DJ. I really think 5 years is a better time frame to judge his success.
With respect to Donohoe. It is customary to bash him and I’m in that boat. but I do remember seeing a post with some of his pretty good finds. I guess your point has to do with day 1 and specifically first round drafting. To be honest, i’m never sure how to think of Parrish. I think of him like the Michigan heisman guy whose now with ESPN (blanking out). He basically won the superbowl for Green Bay but was otherwise a certifiable bust. But then, with his special team contributions, is that a bust? Parrish does have real value for us and may be more of an asset than we give him credit for, especially since we are such a special teams focused team.
I"m blanking out also.........
I can see the face, i can even remember the endzone pose……… but can’t remember his name for the life of me. Aaargggg, i’m going to blame this on Lynch, he just stopped by the house.

A defensive tackle we took in the third round from Ohio St. (go figure) who was a mediocre (at best) rotational player for a couple of seasons before getting cut.
Ok, cool, now that i have that tid bit of information
How does that draft receive a B- ?

Well
Lee Evans really carried the day for that draft class… but Tim Anderson was not a horrible pick… as a 3rd rounder he provided good depth at DT. However, the Bills ended up leaning on him waaaayyy too much and it really hurt his ability to contribute. But the Bills don’t get a bad grade for him because he provided good depth out of the 3rd round, Losman is what really killed the class because we only had one productive season out of him.
