Crowell Visited OBD Tuesday
The team finally confirmed UFA Angelo Crowell visited today (not Monday as was initially reported last week).
BB.com's Chris Brown also did a write-up on his blog about how tough it must be for Crowell to go from team to team 19 days into free agency and still not have a deal.
Buffalo has also hosted free agent linebackers Cato June, Freddie Keiaho and Jamie Winborn this offseason, not yet signing any.

I can't tell if that is sarcasm or not....
I am completely neutral on this issue. I liked Crowell as a player but is he healed? Can they really put everything to the side and work towards a common goal? I really could go either way on this.

Please sign him! I was excited about the LB trio of Poz, Mitchell, and Crowell last year. And I would be excited about those 3 this year, provided we upgrade DE in the draft.

Don’t hold your breath. Chances are extremely low that he’ll actually be signed.

Question.
I’m going to bed to so I’ll read your reply tomorrow. Anyway, do you think the TO signing might make Crowell feel like playing in Buffalo could be better than for some other teams offering the same money?

I don't know that 19 days into free agency he has a lot of choice in the matter.
It’s more a matter of if the Bills want him, not the other way around.

I’m not certain that’s terribly relevant. I think Crowell’s interest in re-signing in Buffalo is based solely around the idea that he knows he’s not held in high regard here, but also knows the Bills are having trouble finding a replacement. He probably thinks he can finagle a one-year deal, get healthy and hit the big time when he’s 28 next off-season. I don’t think the Bills are that desperate.

Is Buffalo having a hard time finding a replacement for Crowell?
Or has OBD decided to draft their highest rated LB at #11 and make that guy the starter?
by Ron From NM on Mar 17, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just posted a similar thought below Ron. I was thinking maybe they are targeting a very specific type of player they don’t see in FA ?

Is there a LB draft candidate who would also be great at the blitz, addressing two birds with one stone?

by Joe P. on Mar 17, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I don’t remember the specifics of it, but I do remember him or Brian, or someone on the coaching staff talking about getting a LB that can rush the passer. With Matthews ability to get after the QB, it makes sense. If he were drafted, it wouldn’t surprise me if he lined up at DE in certain situations. Right now, he might be the only non-DE I’d be totally content with at #11….haha

Here it is
Outside of Modrak and his people, for whom this is a full-time job, the other folks at OBD are just now turning away from FA and starting to focus on the Draft. Much is uncertain and things will go back and forth in the next 5-6 weeks. There will be LOTS of discussion. However, here is what i think may be going on. A) I strongly sense that they would like #11 to be a defensive playmaker. B) I sense that they are not impressed enough with Brown, Orakpo or Maybin to make any of them their # 11. C) Of the three USC LB’s I think they like Mathews the best. D) They may like Pettigrew more than you think. E) They may well draft 2, or even 3 O-Lineman.
If you were to ask me—If I could somehow get Matthews at 11 and hope Duke Robertson slide to us in the second. I’d do cartwheels all the way home.
Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'... but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'? Where's that extra penny going to?
by Joe P. on Mar 17, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was thinking more about the type of LB the team will be looking for, more than Matthews specifically, but that comment works too.
Personally, I think any LB they look at in the draft will have to have some pass rush skills. Matthews fits that, as does Cushing. Others would include Clint Sintim (I think), Connor Barwin (maybe), Cody Brown and Zack Follett. Assuming all of those guys could play the OLB position in a 4-3 scheme, they would fit well because of their ability to rush the passer….

If the Bills are smart they sign him to a longer deal
With incentives and escalator clauses for year 2 & 3
You know that maybe the bills placing him on IR was strategic? If not he could have come back and made an impression in the final 3-4 games and instead now every team has doubts – which keeps his value low and keeps him more desparate. Could it be that this whole thing was just a brilliant negotiation tactic on the part of the Bills?

Hmm. Maybe Jauron’s “win now” philosophy he has going into this year will allow him to forgive Crowell for a season. They’re probably looking at the the other FA’s and assessing the draft before they decide on making an offer, right?
by jj24 on Mar 18, 2009 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think they’re waiting to see what happens with Peters and along the offensive line, to be honest. That’s a bigger priority right now. There’s enough depth at LB in FA/draft and DE in the draft that they can be patient at those positions while they figure out their offensive front.

Sign him….he knows our system and he does a decent job. I would sign him over Cato or the other FA LBs. If we draft a LB it doesn’t mean they will be ready to play…SIGN HIM!!!!
by copperbillzfn on Mar 17, 2009 9:55 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
At first I’d say Crowell is definitely not a downgrade from our current LB corp, as I recall he won the starting job last preseason, didn’t he? I wouldn’t think that it would be that big a risk to sign him back. We could certainly use the depth, and we go through LB’s like they’re disposable once the season starts.
But I wonder…
The very deliberate, slow pace that they are taking at addressing the OLB position has me thinking that they must be looking for a very particular type of player, and they don’t feel that any of the free agents fit the mold, so even if they’re good, they don’t fit the scheme of this defense and so are not really going to have the intended impact.
So if does that put OLB maybe higher in the draft than I thought before? Maybe even the first or second pick if that unique OLB player is available?
Or am I reading too much into the tea leaves?

fill in the blank. You name it. Game situations, playcalling, timeouts, offensive coordinator vacancy, free agency…

The fact that he came and went just tells me that he's not signing with Buffalo
OBD doesn’t really like him, and he can probably get a better offer frp, another team. I’d love to re-sign him, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.

I think the decision at LB is being held up by other factors
I think some other issue indirectly related to LB is holding up the decision. Something like the draft board or trade issues or whether or not they feel they can sign Peters. Sort of a domino effect. For example, If we decide to draft a DE, then we sign a FA LB. If we don’t think we can get a DE, then we draft a LB. Or just the opposite. Just a hunch.

Poor Crow
A guy who at one point was rapidly being recognized as approaching elite LB status lost a season and now is going to get a minimum contract.
Ouch.

Who ever considered Crowell as close to an elite LB??!?!?!?
He was a good, solid LB at one point, but never close to elite. Why do you think that Poz?

Well after he spent two seasons watching and learning from elite guys like London Fletcher and Takeo Spikes, Crowell’s first three starting seasons in Buffalo made him seem poised to follow in their mold. At 23 years old he put up 119 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions while only starting 13 games filling in after we lost Takeo. At age 24 he came right back with 82 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 interceptions while only starting 12 games. At age 25 he had a third straight solid year, this time starting 16 games, and posting 126 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 interceptions. During that three year span Crow registered 16 passes defended, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 safety as well. Keep in mind by the time Crowell had only reached the age of Trent Edwards and Jay Cutler he was putting up these numbers.
If that doesn’t seem like a guy ready to bust through and become elite I don’t know what does. He was developing into a fine linebacker. So long as he’s had playing time he’s played well. Then at age 26 he was put on IR. Now he’s 27 and can’t find a job. I’d be lying if I said that didn’t upset me a bit to think that a guy we developed and molded into a pretty fine backer can’t get a fair shake.

Sure the stats looked nice, but I never considered him elite, or even close to it when watching him play.
However, I’d happily take those numbers again, and a good OLB…

His stats were very good
over his last three season before his injury his stats were very good for a SLB
average of 110 tackles/per season
average of 5.3 PD
over 2 sacks per season
1.7 INT per season.
1-2 FF per season
In comparison: Keith Ellison
73 tackles
2 PD
0 sacks
0 INT
0 FF

Or is he?
Is he reaping what he sewed last year? Or did the coaches tell him to hold off on surgery? Does anyone know the real story? Brian? I know he had a workout problem that Mitchell jumped down his throat about goofing off in the training room. Other than this I have no idea. Does anyone really know that Cro opted to have surgery so late and the team punished him for it? Is this a FACT?
The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.

And draft a rookie? Isn’t that how you build depth on your team? We could bump off one of the ST specialists.
