News - Coles to visit Cincinnati Bengals
Free agent wide receiver Laveranues Coles is scheduled to visit the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. The Bengals are looking to replace WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who signed a free agent deal with Seattle on Monday.
We reported this morning that a deadline exists on Buffalo's contract offer to Coles. With the veteran making another visit as that deadline approaches, the chances that the Bills land Coles are dwindling quickly.

Control what you can control.
It’s time to move on to Sean Jones.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
I agree here Fort Worth. If Coles is going to use the Bengals as leverage, just let him go. Make the push for Jones.
Did he even visit anybody? If not, he might be had for a lesser deal then any of us thought before.
I’d give Toomer a phone call next.
I have yet to hear of him having any visits. That’s good, as it could keep his price tag relatively low. Kind of like Cato June a few years ago. Everyone seemed to think he’d have a lot of suitors, but was still sitting there unsigned a few weeks into March. He ended up with a decent 3 year deal, maybe we can hit up Jones for the same….

im used to this kind of news...
If we can finagle DE Brian Orakpo and C Alex Mack I will not complain about this team for a whole season. I promise.
is that some demented version
of Star Wars? Are you trying to lure me towards the gray side? Instead of “gooood, I can feel your anger…” your using “gooood…..i can feel your apathy…..soon your journey towards the gray side will be complete!”

I *LIKE* it!!!
I think I actually was channeling the evil Emperor when I typed that… It’s funny that you find it more demented than the actual luring of people to the dark side. I’ve been a resident of said dark side for quite some time. We have cookies.
Cookies? I LOVE cookies! The dark side has milk, right?

Any lapdancers as well? The evil side ALWAYS has better stuff than the good....
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
Any other WR options?
When thinking about free agent (or draft) WRs I think we’ve come to the point where we need to start talking about rosters spots. Evans, Reed, Hardy, Johnson and Jenkins clearly aren’t going anywhere. Since Buffalo has carried 6 WRs for several years there’s only one slot left. I just don’t see OBD taking a (now) third tier guy like Toomer over Parrish. Coles, yeah, I can see that.
My guess is that Hardy won't be ready and put on the PUP or IR if
he doesn’t look like he is ready to compete at a very high level for the start of the season.
I blame Brian
I tried to call him Waldo, but nooooooooo…you had to call him Panda II. Same name….same result? :-P
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
I like the name Waldo better.
I’m sure if we called him Waldo, we would have found him and he would have signed with the Bills by now!
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
If I knew that, I’d have shared it by now. Sorry. :(

RIGHT. NOW.

Hopefully, it’ll be a few days from now. At least give him a chance to visit Cincy tomorrow. Maybe Wed. night or something….

I want to say that I'm ready to move on
But I’d really like to see what would happen if we schedual a second visit with him after he visits cincy. I’m sorry but I really think Coles would be a great fit in Buffalo and I really want him. So how much damage could a second visit do?
by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 2, 2009 8:28 PM EST up reply actions
I can see Buffalo upping their offer One time
In any negotiation, from buying your first car, to haggling on the street, to negotiating player contracts, you should be prepared to up your offer at least one time. Having a willingness to concede one level of pay communicates your willingness to compromise and find mutual ground, but also that you have interests above giving in.
So it should be with the Bills. Naturally the Bills made a low offer and Coles made a high offer, both probably hoping to settle in the middle. If we can’t come to a consensus, I think Buffalo can make one more offer that is a little closer to what Coles would like. If Coles draws the line in the sand too far, well then we tried. We made a reasonable attempt to please all parties and keep our bottom line secure at the same time.
What makes me think this has to be leverage is the nature of the Bengals. Normally I would think he was pulling a Fred Taylor and seeing if he could find a better team than the Bills. But the Bengals offense and team in general is pisspoor. This visit to Cincy means Coles has to be looking for money first. Which means he is shopping around to see if anyone will pay more than Buffalo.
by Dyl on Mar 2, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions
Thus, my strategy of making one offer above this present offer.
We want Coles badly, not badly enough to splurge, but yes, badly enough to give him a little bit more than we might want to. We can use his talents and any of our season ticket money short of an outrageous amount will be money well spent, a kickback, if you will, should Coles pay off.
by Dyl on Mar 2, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions
Hey maybe theres still hope
maybe Coles will come to his senses and realize that Buffalo is the far superior team…. maybe he wont give a damn about the money… maybe we can still sign him and then make a push for Jason taylor…. maybe we’ll also draft the best available player as uposed to reaching for a position of need in the first round… and then maybe we can trade for payton manning…. and the maybe we’ll win the superbowl so we can finally build that new stadium that will keep the bills in buffalo…. maybe… maybe…. damn

"...maybe we’ll also draft the best available player as uposed to reaching for a position of need..."
Evidently it’s you and I versus the world on that one.
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.
Thats what i think too
I mean, if Crabtree lets say is there at 11. You take him, no matter what. If Curry is there you take him. If Maluaga or however you spell his name is there you take him. If Maybin is your best player on the board at the time, you take him.
The Bills CAN win every game
And as an added bonus
for once every player that might fall to us is also a player that is in one of our positions of need. lets just not do something stupid like reach and draft Pettigrew with the 11th, he would deffinatly not be the best player available… and neither would Mack be… althought i got the feeling that OBD will draft Pettigrew and disapoint all of us.
by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 2, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
no way
But if Pettigrew is the next Gonzo, by all means. I don’t think so, but who knows
The Bills CAN win every game
Nah, I'm down with BPA most of the time, as long as the biggest hole isn't fillable with the 2nd best BPA
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
Does this mean that we can finaly trade for Waters
If Coles doesn’t sign with us we have more than enough money for Waters
by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 2, 2009 8:36 PM EST reply actions
We’d have more than enough with or without Coles. Aren’t we like $30M under the cap still?
~K
"I’m Kurupt with Buffalo Rumblings. I am worth hundreds!"
I know we have more than enough money, especially since his highest cap hit would be 3.9M. I was just trying to get the ppl that argued that his salery was an issue to get off that.
I still think that we should trade for Waters
by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 2, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions
At the right price, I obviously agree to trade for Waters. Would love to have that guy…

Its funny... we keep talking about these same guys over and over again... how come
the Bills don’t simply make some moves already on these guys. If our fans keep talking about how good these guys will be for our team and the players know what it will take for them to sign, why won’t Ralph, Russ, John G, Dick J. etc. make any significant moves to make sure these guys become Buffalo Bills right away.
I don’t see other teams have as much hesitation as we do for a team as much under the cap as we are… I mean we can’t even sign our own guys without hesitation… Greer, Peters, Crowell, even Lee Evans last year took longer than need be. The only thing we seem to do well is tender our own RFA’s who no body else wants.
How do you know they aren't making the moves on them?
ThHey contacted teh Chiefs and gave Coles the highest offer he has! Whatm ore can they do besides throw first round picks at the Chiefs and offer Coles 10M per? They have done everything they should for these guys!

this is
pretty disappointing. Clearly, all Cincy needs to do is outbid Buffalo and they are prepared to do that. I mean they were offering Housh $8 mill a year. They’ll pay cole that I bet. Something outrageous and the Bills will be smart and let him walk. He ain’t worth that. But then again, with the Bills sorely lacking any offensive fire power, and the desperate need for Coles ability, toughness, veteran leadership, experience and attitude, maybe it’s time the BIlls overpay and take a shot in a playoffs or Bust year for Dick Jauron and company?
MARVelous
If Cincy was offering $8 million per year you’d think Housh would have taken it. After all, he’s put up his big numbers with Carson Palmer.
but Cincy has zero shot at the playoffs.
Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do
when they come for you?
I think that’s a distinctly Bills-fan point of view.

Remember? All that caring and crap is all in our heads. The only people they have to do right by are the kids.
The Benjamins
It appears like Seattle just outbid Cincy and Housh went for the $$. Shocker!!!! if the numbers I have seen this AM are right. The Seahawks gave him $8M a year with #13M guaranteed, while the Bengals offered him “Plaxico” money—e.g., $7M with $11M guaranteed. I like Housh a lot—but he’s always been a #2 receiver—with Och Conco on the other side. Can you say Alvin harper?
Hard to say where the Coles thing is heading, but if the Bills are prepared to offer him the $6M guaranteed that he stupdidly left on the table with the Jets (and I believe they are), that’s a boatload for a number two receiver and as much as I think he’d help us a lot—am not sure if he’d be worth it.
If today’s Report about the Cardinals offering CB Bryant Mcfadden only $3-$4M a year are right, then that would be an indication that the CB market is now dropping dramitically and I expect Greer will be back here.
I can confirm the Water’s trade talks—but hear the Chiefs are attempting to extort the Bills with the type and quantity of draft picks.
Geronimo
Waters
Thanks Geronimo…I am crossing my fingers that we can work out a trade for Waters that doesn’t cost us too much in draft picks. I think he’d finally give us the o-line that we need to have a competent offense. Any thoughts on how likely it is that we’ll get Waters?
Beside, we haven't lost anything yet
unless I missed something, Coles hasn’t signed with anyone yet. so theres still a chance… a sonw balls chance in hell… but a chance

Deon Branch
Now that the Seahawks signed TJ Housh, they might be releasing Branch. Im not huge on him coming to Bills, but if he could be had for a low price, I wouldnt be very opposed to it. He had some injuries last season that would drop his price down.
I wouldn't sign him
In his time in Seatle Branch proved that he needs a GREAT QB to be effective. With Tom Brady, a future HOFer, he was really good, but not great, in Seatle, with Hasslebeck, a really good QB, he was a slot receiver at best. His asking price will be higher than what I’d be willing to pay for a glorified slot receiver.

Perhaps
Like the draft, wher you have the “big board”, OBD grades the free agents. They look at their holes, look at the market and say, (and with having knowledge from around the league how much guys are getting paid etc) well, we have this much ready for a guy of this caliber, and if he doesn’t want it thats it.
And to me this is smart, because many free agents don’t pan out, just like draft picks, so why bend over for these guys. Coles is a very good player, and I would love him if he was a Bill. But if not, there is a good chance he underachieves and adds little to his next team. There is positive potential, but if not we’ll see what happens. This seems to be the same approach as last year Bryant Johnson. They went for a targeted WR, the offer fell through. And then Johnson didn’t do squat in SF, or at least no better than Josh Reed.
This might show that we might still draft a WR somewhere in the draft. Usually take a couple
The Bills CAN win every game
We won't be drafting a WR.
We have developmental guys. We need a vet or nobody.
