ESPN: Chat with Tim Graham - SportsNation
Jake ( Lancaster): What do the Bills get for Peters? How crazy is it to trade him when any team drafting #1 would gladly pay $11.5 million per year for a LT that turned out like him?Tim Graham: If the Dolphins had their choice between Jason Peters and Jake Long, I'm sure they still would have taken Long. Peters was an undrafted tight end the Bills happened to mold into a good tackle. I'm not sure what the Bills eventually will get, but I wouldn't expect a first-round pick.

So can we finally end the completely insane talk that Peters could bring back two first round picks or even a first and a second?

It wouldn't be the first time
a player was traded for more than he was worth.

Peters can K.I.S.S. my ....... post :-)
Maybe we should just ban Peters from discussion :-)
Or, I can just keep posting this:
Top 3 ways to deal with Peters:
3. Make him play out the remaining 2 years on this contract, franchise him for a 3rd year. Trade him if possible or let him walk as a last resort. That gives us 3 years to find his replacement via the draft or FA.
2. Trade him for for multiple draft picks, not less than this year’s 1st and 3rd, plus next years 2nd.
1. Sign him for 9-10 M/year, not a dime more.

I think I agree with all three points
For sure that I agree with 3 & 2 but when it comes to the amount I think I’d go to 11M if he is worth it but that’s a big “if” It’s a business, pure and simple and we don’t need to like the guy. As long as he is doing the job we need for him to do I’d be willing to pay him.
The question that needs to be answered is, can he handle the premier DEs in the league? I need Ron’s help on this one..
In week 8 when we lost to MIA, we gave up two sacks to Porter who plays on the same side as Peters. Was Peters to blame?
Then again in Week 14 Porter had two more sacks, same question was Peters to blame?
When I look at last year, we gave up 1.5 sacks to Ware against Dallas and another to porter in our first matchup.
That he plays well against weak teams doesn’ mean much. If we are to pay him 9-11M he has to be one the top LTs in the league and untill you can stop the top 5 DEs on a consistent basis then you just ain’t worth that much. From what I can see the 3-4 OLB position on his side normally have good games with multiple sacks – which is totally not acceptable for a $11M /year LT. Hey Ron can you help?
he needs to be able to stop the star pass-rushers

I had never taken the time
to actually look at his performance against the top flight guys and honestly I am starting to waiver on my stance.
With a guy like Oher available at #11, I wonder if trading Peters to Philly for their 21 & their 2nd round pick (#52) if that would not be enough? Then get Pettigrew at #21, Mack or Unger at 43 and Paul Kruger at 52.

What is so appealing about Kruger? His very average athleticism? His complete and utter lack of sacks (4 of his 7.5 came against Utah St and only had 3 his freshman season)?
And I love how you are wondering if picks 21 and 52 would be enough when the entire premise of the fanshot is that the Bills probably couldn’t get a first round pick according to Tim Graham

I ove this response
Tom (North Carolina): Tim..the Bills already made a deal with the devil(t.o.)why not go all in and go after Cutler? It would go a long way toward making them relevant.
SportsNation Tim Graham: Don’t get too caught up in being relevant, which is a buzz word for “making moves that get your team on SportsCenter.” Edwards is fine, and the Bills need every premium asset they can find. Trading Edwards and a high pick (or whatever) would

SportsNation Tim Graham: I’m not so sure. The Dolphins did a pretty decent job last year by drafting tackle and then getting their quarterback of the future in the second round. Stafford seems like the pick, but I don’t see it as automatic.

Peters
Hopefully so, I know some guys here at Rumblings believe we should hold on to Peters, and hold him in very high regard, but if he is going to act up again and the two sides aren’t close on a deal by the draft, trade him. Very good, first year impact tackles are found in the 1st round every year.
-08 Long, Clady, Williams, Albert, Brown
-07 Thomas, Staley
-06 Ferguson
So if the offer of an additional, even it if is one 1 first rounder is on the table and Peters wants to become far and away the highest paid tackle(which he is not worth) then the Bills should make a strong consideration. Grab Oher at 11, (looks like he has the most possibility to be there) and take a LB/DE later in the first and a pass catching TE early in the second
by billsct11 on Mar 21, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The problem for trading Peters just use a pick to replace him is that there is no guarantee we will get a quality tackle. The smartest thing to do is just sign him. We have a great LT, lets lock him up

concern
Are you worried that a disgruntled Peters will not put in a top effort or will he be highly motivated by his next contract?
by jpheff on Mar 21, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he’s highly motivated for his next contract, you wont’ have to worry about his effort. If he wants top dollar, he’ll need to prove to the league that he’s worth it….

But if he is forced to play this coming year under his old contract we may see him taking himself out of the line-up alot for what other people would regard as minor injuries, etc.
by Macktruck on Mar 21, 2009 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The same logic could support the opposite conclusion. Why would anyone give up their first round pick (or more) if it is so easy to find a tackle in the draft. Why wouldn’t they bypass Peters and just draft the new tackle straight from the draft?
Or better, if they are so desperate for a tackle they would be willing to trade up to the #11 spot in the draft and then give the bills an extra draft pick.
Any deal to trade Peters would be a wash, at best. Maybe they’d save a couple million dollars, but the talent level on the team would not improve at all.
by south123 on Mar 21, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a couple million dollars. About 45-50 millions dollars over 5-6 years depending on what draft picks they get. That is a huge amount of money. Is it still a wash if Buffalo drafts someone almost as good as Peters at 11, a DE almost as good as the guys available at 11 with the pick they get for Peters, draft a solid cheap backup with another pick they get for Peters and then sign Owen Daniels and next offseason with the money they saved?
by kaisertown on Mar 21, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thats a wash
If these rookies are so great, why would Philadelphia or anyone else be willing to give up a 1st round pick and then start paying Peters 11 million a yr when they too could sign an awesome rookie at $3 million a year and they themselves can then sign Owen Daniels.
Yes to me that’s a wash. To the teams bottom line that’s a gain. In your scenario you are downgrading two positions this year so that next year you can improve one position. And to downgrade any position on the offensive line that gives Edwards less time to throw or gets hit more often, that negates the whole reason for spending 6.5 million on TO to improve the offense this year.
I know it seems tempting, and it will probably go down, but think its mortgaging away our present to improve our future.
by south123 on Mar 21, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see what your saying, but that’s exactly my point. If he is just going to be bothersome again, and the Bills can save money, and get a tackle of equal or similar talent it is worth it, to trade him for picks and grab an LT. If we go into the draft and Peters hasn’t negotiated, it sure will be interesting to see what unfolds
by billsct11 on Mar 21, 2009 3:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I live in CT too, hah!
I agree that from a troublesome headache standpoint it will probably go down as people say. If they can get close to what they had in value, it will be something we’ll just live with to get over the headache. I just dont think that its a great idea talent wise. If it were sucha great deal, we’d make the deal even if Peters signed.

Chris Brown's Fan Friday on his blog....
2. Chris,
My question to you is: What if the Bills are on the clock at 11 and Maybin, Brown and Orakpo along with Defensive Tackle B.J.Raji are gone and one of the top Left Tackles, Jason Smith out of Baylor for example, is available; could you see the Bills drafting him and trading Jason Peters for a 1st round draft pick to a team that may need one like Detroit (20th) and Philadelphia (21st or 28th)? There is no doubt that Peters is a gifted athlete but with another off season of potential hold outs by him and his agent, do you think it would be beneficial to the team to stop these distractions and get down to business?
Sincerely,
Dan
CB: That’s a tricky scenario. Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe won’t be there, but I understand your point. Michael Oher and Andre Smith should be there at 11, and with the way things are going regarding an extension for Jason Peters, what you’re proposing is more realistic than some might think.
If the Jason Peters situation is still unresolved come draft weekend, I can see the team moving him for a first and middle round pick, maybe more, maybe less. Acquiring an additional first round pick should give the Bills the luxury of taking one of the top four offensive tackles in the draft at 11.
I’d prefer Michael Oher to Smith because Oher is arguably the most athletic tackle in the draft. His instincts still need to be developed, but his athleticism makes up for a lot of those shortcomings that should get better in time. Oher could play on the left side, Smith cannot at this level as I see it.
Now keep in mind that they could address another position at 11 like linebacker in this scenario and get one of the bet of the bunch, whoever they determine that to be and if they’re down in the early 20’s with their other first round pick as you suggest, they could grab Arizona State OT Eben Britton, but he is more of a right tackle at the NFL level according to most scouts.
Things could certainly get very interesting for the Bills on draft weekend.

And another one....
4. Chris,
What are your thoughts on the restructuring of Jason Peters’ contract? I believe that his holding out at the beginning of the year impacted the team in a negative way. It seemed that it ruined the whole chemistry of the O-line. As we all know, it wasn’t until the Monday night game when the run game started to get going. I wasn’t impressed all season with the protection of Trent Edwards. Honestly, I don’t know how Peters was elected to the Pro-Bowl. Do you foresee a possible trade, renegotiation, no action, or something else? Thanks for your time.
-Joe Maciag
CB: From what I understand the two sides have yet to close the gap on a new contract. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Bills still work to come to a resolution until the NFL draft, and if there is no progress my feeling is they may look into trading him prior to draft weekend. It’ll be unfortunate if it comes to that, but it takes two parties to make an agreement work and if the Bills can’t get some kind of compromise from the Peters camp it doesn’t leave them with too many other alternatives. And I don’t believe they’d be interested in dragging a contract renegotiation through another season.

The Peters situation is not complicated
The Bills FO agreed to renigociate Peters contract. In doing so the FO recognized Peters is worth more than what his current contact is paying him. What they have to determine is if they let Peters sit or go how much would they have to pay for another pro bowl LT. They should research the contracts of the 2008 pro bowl LTs and offer him a new comparable contract . The new contract will make Peters the highest paid player on the team. If they are still millions apart and he chooses to sit out, the Bills should then trade him.
by gjv on Mar 21, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It is complicated.
Right now he’s making like 3M a year. They said they would renegotiate not make him the highest paid LT in the game! Are you trying to say there’s not middle ground between 3M and 12M a year? He doesn’t want to get a comparable contract (10M a year) or else he would be signed. I firmly believe the Bills offer him $9-10M a year.

we definately get a 1st rounder for him... it's not about where you were drafted when you came in the league its about where your at right now in your career, and
peters is a pro bowl left tackle, not to mention they look at the LT’s in the draft and ask where would peters be in this class as far as talent, and my guess is he would be at the top, definately worth a pick in the 20’s if we were to trade w/ the eagles. T. graham neeeds to get a clue
